This is why Snyder failed to deliver us a proper Superman and why I couldn’t care less for it. Horrible.. The actor great but the suit and movie was terrible
@@DW3010 I don't think anyone blamed Henry in fact everyone loves Henry. Fans have always blamed Snyder and Warner brothers. They screwed Henry out of playing a proper Superman.
If you ask me, James' advice needs to apply to the DC comic book universe too. DC nowadays just runs things into the ground and makes us all weary of how often they hit dry wells (Dark, depressing Batman, All Harley Quinn all the time, etc. ). How long until we see a mini-series prequel of Aunt Harriet starts her menstrual cycle? Stop all the Reboots! Rather than Absolutes, how about instead fixing the original universes? DC is a grab bag of chaos ideas and none of them stand a chance of working because the roots of the company are so shredded.
What has been amazing has been how DC has a catalog of great and entertaining animated films.....yet their live action ones havent come close in terms of that quality level. Your list hits a lot of the correct points for a proper reboot of the DC universe!
This DCU Batman has to be fantastical. He needs a blue and grey suit. His villains need to be Clayface, Manbat, Mad Hatter, etc. He must have a Robin (apparently it’s Damian). The Bat Family should already be established and alive throughout Gotham. We need that so bad. I cannot do grounded and gritty Batman anymore. Death stroke would be incredible like you mentioned. I also think the first “big bad” of this universe should be Brainiac
I agree with most of what you say, especially about already having established heroes and villains instead of wasting time with origins. I want to see cosmic stuff so much but agree it must be introduced slowly. Lobo is my favorite character but he has always been best as a side character, seeing him pop up in Justice League and Mr. Miracle in the early '90s was so exciting when I was a kid.
New to the channel I think your vision of Superman would be incredible! We've gone so far off the rails with Superhero movies I think making him with the qualities of pure hope and pure American but not nationalistic would actually be so original compared to what we've seen lately.
I think we are all waiting for Superman to become that light and beacon of hope we all remember Superman to be and not just the brooding muscle who comes in to beat down the bad guy that nobody else can handle. Plus we definitely need a serious Flash and not the comic relief one. Definitely think you’re right on about not worrying about tying in previous actors takes on characters and start fresh and start with the basics. Hope someone high up in the DCU listens to your advice.
After the recent penguin show i hope we get a John Constantine HBO show set in DCU. What project that hasnt been announced yet would you want in this universe? Love the channel btw!
I very much agree with this list. Things were just too dark and brooding on the DC side, especially for Superman so sticking with what works as far as the Reeves superman. Key to remember that Tim Burton's Batman was dark and gothic, not dark and brooding which is important to really capture the character. Where I do think DC really shines is with it's villains. MCU has always had a villain problem but I hope JG embraces what he has in the rogue's gallery for all these DC characters.
You are very correct about Superman. Superman should be a beacon of light. Whenever he is in a scene the scene should not be muted colors. This I believe was the biggest error that was made in the DCU. The only dark characters should be Batman and darker villains. Even some of the villains in the DCU are very colorful and flamboyant. Lex Luthor doesn't sulk around in the dark. He is forefront and a force in the business world. He's that guy you know has done some shady stuff but he does it just above the law. I agree about staying away from the multiverse and I will add to that time travel. Both of those are too complex for the general audience. They also paint you in a corner when building a multi year/grand superhero opera.
I fully agree nearly across the board. Ignoring all other universes is key. Burn them to the ground and make it clear that the Gunn-verse won't be dipping into those waters when it suits them 20 years from now, à la MCU-FOX-Sony shared universes. But I don't think they'll necessarily do that. Nostalgia is almost a license to print money so if they think pulling in Cavill and Gadot etc in 10-15 years from now would make for a big smash movie, they're going to (unfortunately) do it. I also fully agree on Superman - get him right. Bright, hopeful, optimistic. It can't be this hard. I also never liked the multiverse element of comic books I think it enables lazy storytelling that too often sabotages earlier choices. I'd stay away from that for as long as possible, and ideally forever. I'm fine with Elseworlds stories being told, but they need to be branded as such, and made clear that they will not ever cross over into the "main" universe. Another great video. Thanks, James.
I was saying it for a while the new DCU should have had already established things, it looks like that's semi the case with Superman with all the hero cameos lined up, but with the casting specifically going younger I think we are getting first hero vibes. A proper Flash vs Grodd movie would be big box office, I would do a Green Arrow and Green Lantern team up movie, so each character can benefit GA grounds Green Lantern so we don't cosmic and GL gives a shine to a less widely known character to the casual audience. Finally, i would shamelessly steal the formula of the 1st phase of the MCU and build the Justice League movie by movie instead of going from Batman v Superman straight to the Justice League
I agree with everything you are saying but I think that the biggest problems with the dc is that they keep re hashing the start everyone knows the origin. Just recap and get on with it. Don't spend 40 min on an opening we all know. Also I like the joker but not every time I would like to see hush, the court of owls. Batman has an amazing rouges gallery that's never used.
Dude, that was an amazing video. I hope they do something along the lines of what you just said, I hope they do exactly what you just said. That would be an epic movie.
Wow James! If I had the clout or contacts I would definitely be pitching you to DC like ASAP you certainly have a great take on the best comic company in my opinion. I do like Marvel but my heart will always be with DC. Keep up the awesome content.
I've decided to just be along for the ride on this one. I try not to put too much expectation or my own desires or plan on these movies. It's better to be surprised IMO.
I like the grounded earth and city level threat concept. I like both. Question is do you create a separate mystic / magic universe? Having magic there on a team with super soldiers or technological geniuses and no tie as to how they fit is a loose end for me.
Hey man I am a big fan of the channel. 45 years old, and just got back into the comics game. Can you do a video on your biggest L's and biggest W's you have taken? Just like poker I am sure you remember almost all of your biggest Ls, and most of your Ws. Thanks for the content dude. When people love something they are invested and passionated and don't like to see something they loved destroyed, you can't tell people to restrict there emotions and feelings just cause you don't like what they say.
Id do a groundbreaking TV series that lays out an essential origin for the DC universe. An episode dedicated to the fate of Krypton. The Origin of the Guardians of the Universe. An episode that establish the WW2 era
At least early on, there shouldn’t be a lot of cameos. The Authority shouldn’t be in the Superman movie, for example. Nothing wrong with a reference or two to establish that other heroes and teams exist, but the Superman movie should focus on Superman, the Flash movie on Flash, etc.
It might get muddied up, but I don't mind cameos - that's how it is in most event storylines in the comics. The ability to juggle a large cast is tough, but they shouldn't shy away from it
I don't know if I really want a fully fledged universe anymore. Having everything interconnected has some real trade-offs. If it all has to have quite a uniform feeling, then it means the movies lose a lot of their potential originality. It also is starting to feel like a connected universe is only as strong as its weakest link, if that makes sense. If you have some really bad movies and tv shows, it is hard to disconnect them, and the whole thing starts to get negatively affected
Unfortunately a shared universe is 100 percent going to happen - we've known about this reboot for a few years. SO if it's going to happen - we can hope it gets done RIGHT
@@MintHunterComics True. I am crossing my fingers they don't screw it up and just end up trying again in another few years. IF they get it right, it could be epic.
I agree with most of what you said. The only 2 things I disagree with are introducing the full rogue galleries for Batman and the Flash. It would be very difficult to flesh them out if you're not spending time with each one. But I could be wrong. I don't read much of either hero so I don't know if they could be fleshed out quickly and efficiently. The other thing: DC isn't going to spend huge sums of money on shows. From a dan standpoint, it'd be great. From a business standpoint, it's a huge gamble with little to win. Shows don't earn nearly as much as movies. Marvel gets away with it because they earn so much already that they have a cushion in case a project doesn't do too well. I'd love to see a time when DC and Marvel were true equals again though. If I was working at WB, I'd hire you
I think Sentinels of Magic needs to be a DCU TV show. Being a Pre-JLA Dark gathering. Also, while Penguin is great, I think Black Mask could result in a great Batman storyline.
I think that I agree with the list! I would like to know if you would want them to do a 1:1 adaptation of famous comic storylines or do what the MCU did and take elements and themes and fit it in with what they got?
Not I mostly agree although. I would like Batman and Superman around the same age. Definitely want a smart brooding Batman, have him clash with so many other heroes especially with Superman Guy Gardner I'll add I would do a tv series around Aquaman kind of dark, little more street fighting drug dealers, rogue soldiers in the ocean with submarines, pirates keep him grounded Bring a tv series with more street level characters like the Question Wild cat Huntress Bronze Tiger Lady Shiva, I would do a "John Wick" style Deadshot movie with a major star like a Mark Walhberg Robin would be a very gritty dark character Wonderwoman more warrior scrappy type taking on strong type villains Your Green Lantern idea spot on I have Firestorm as a Spiderman type Shazam would be more dark brutal scarier world to be in
I'm not clear about your point of Earth always having a protector. I'm not up on DC continuity, but I thought JSA and JLA were on different earths..? Anyway, I agree that a reboot should initially focus on a single earth, a single universe with well written characters. Simple, right? Don't worry, the suits will find a way to screw it up.
I like what you've started to lay out here but would add/adjust it in a slight way. JSA already being established would be awesome, but I would make 65 yr looking Superman and Wonder Woman as FOUNDING Members. How so....... RIP HUNTER. I would love for time travel not universe hopping be used to get the Trinity into JSA akin to Silver Age lore.
I think people have put Christopher Reeve superman on a such a tall pedestal it no longer matches the reality of the films and makes it impossible for a superman film to be loved by some fans.
So the most successful recent DC movie character Aquaman is supposed to take a back seat. I tiered of people talking lobo with Mamoa it’s an insult. Aquaman is way more iconic and a real acting role not a crass snarky Deadpool (breaking forth wall) wannabe. Just cast Emilia Clark and maybe Johnny Depp as fisherman and watch you have another winner.
I like the video and you've got great production value - as a friendly suggestion you may want to invest on a little soundproofing. i don;t think I agree that it has to "feel american" - I get what you're saying but I think the chief reason the first avenger didn't do so well was because the scope of the story wasn't global; wonder woman on the other hand pivoted into the global conflict aspect of world war 1, and did great in terms of receipts - Superman needs to be truth, justice and a better tomorrow instead of the american way.
I think if DC is truly going to reboot their universe they’ve got to stop with the one off projects and completely reset. I also think all major villains need to take a back seat and not be introduced in the first film of these heroes, I’d even venture to say they need to jump in with justice league already established instead of building up for 10 years full of solo movies and shows, but that’s just me. I like your ideas though James!
I agree to sticking with the big guns for films. I don't think Gunn is going to do that. I disagree with you Superman on the nationalism. I would push more on the hope aspect and build off that to unity. I think to go nationalistic would ring hollow especially because we're so divided right now. It could make it feel like propaganda which isn't where we should be at now on the other end. I just think you have to cater to what each character is and find a good mix to allow each character into other worlds, without ripping off the MCU which is a tough task.
I respectfully disagree. We need that authentic midwestern charm from Clark. Without it, it’s just not Superman. A true Superman director and fan of the material will know this and won’t be afraid to show it
I also VERY much disagree with catering rn. People are tired of characters being written to cater to new political correct tropes and has become ridiculous. Do NOT cater. Do NOT succumb. Do NOT change the fundamentals of these 80-year old IPs only to have everyone hate how it turned out anyway lol
@ its not about that. Superman always symbolized hope and that’s the bottom line of that character. The rest are fluid and can change to reflect the new generations. Unfortunately right now, we’re too divided to go that route, at least to me. This isn’t 80 years ago. It’s like people complain about forced diversity, that would be like forced patriotism. The other half of the audience would lose interest or turn on it much like the other half doesn’t like the self reflection cynical version. I think a good Superman rendition that’s positive can bring unity which is what we need first. Superman should be for everyone. you can’t have patriotism without the unity anyway. But you do you, I just think it’s the flip side of the same coin. But it doesn’t even matter what we think, Gunn is going to do it his way. He’s got other problems….Snyder fans. And they love cynical and dark Superman
@ no one is saying take that away from him. I actually like Superman from Superman and Lois. That’s closer to what they should be doing with the Midwest flare. Literally in Smallville and it’s great
Disagree. Swamp Thing is the character I most want to see done proper on the big screen. Etrigan The Demon and Deadman are amazing characters. We’ve seen Batman and Superman a million times. Let’s get a Justice League Dark.
Nowhere in this video did I say don’t do a swamp thing haha. He’s my favorite! Ironically we actually just got a near-perfect swamp thing show 4 years ago. And yet like 18 people watched it 😢😢😢
Please no Superman is evil storylines nor Batman is evil(he kind of was in BVS). I know Owlman is awesome but he pretty much Lex Luther and no Batman who Laughs ever. I mean they have a blue print of what works in the Justice League Animated series. I want Lego Batman haha not as silly but the I am Batman song that he just unstoppable and has so much random stuff he pulls out of a hat to win. I want him to be paranoid but not this depressed monk he has been for all his movies. Dude has like 8 kids, best friend with Superman and is hot billionaire who smashes models. Please give us Nightwing and make him awesome. I can't believe we had 2 Aquaman movies before a Nightwing one or he was even given a cameo. That to me was the most unforgivable aspect of BVS. No matter what Bruce did if Nightwing existed(think he did since the lego batman director was going to do a movie) that he wouldn't come to Gotham to help.
I noted what you said about themes being overdone- IT has gotten old. Get a creative team that actually has comic chops not just sounds, graphics, and lights.
@MintHunterComics thats true and unfortunately I feel they are chasing a unicorn dressed in a batsuit with a big S on their chest. But we'll see if they can do it.
I'm tired of Lex Luthor and the Joker - all the different incarnations. Have LexCorp in the background of a Superman movie, but use a different villain, maybe Parasite. Same with Batman, you could have references to the Joker, but I don't even want a cameo. I'd like to see a version of Hush. Bring Barry Allen back to his core, I skilled forensic scientist. Not a goofball. And, sorry, Deathstroke is, and always will be, a Teen Titans villain. No Teen Titans, no Deathstroke.
D and C-tier characters have to EARN a spotlight. Meaning if these TV shows and movies make an unkown character popular THEN you can greenlight it. But not before. Less gambling
I think your foundation is solid. Keep it on earth. Keep it to the big names. All this bringing in 3rd and 4th string characters is maddening and an uphill battle to get people interested.
You really said sorry to Pattinsons batman? Lol real fans don't want him part of the new crap dcu along with joker lol keep dc black label it's own. Nobody wants a cool Pattison to be part of that dcu lol
I agree with just about all of your points. However, I think Superman will have to eventually move past the "American way" like in the comics. He doesn't always work with our country in his actions, and he should be a beacon of hope for everyone. And I really love what you said about TV, but I also want them to take a cue from Marvel and do some shows based on characters who might not be as well known. Deadman, Gentleman Ghost, Jonah Hex, hell, even a show about the Haunted Tank. One season, 6 episodes, these could work.
So you don’t really have a well thought out plan?! I figured you would do this video one day since you love DC so much. I hope the new DCU is an improvement over the last phase.
I agree with almost all of this. Especially the Superman part. Superman needs to be bright and colorful. Not dark and brooding like Batman.

How big would you let the bat family get? Would you get to Duke, Cass, Stephanie? Or would you keep it the 4 robins? Would you do Helena instead??
Duke sucks.
@ Why?
@@MethodFigures Is just a black Tim Drake.
@@mayotango1317 he isn’t. So what do you think of Miles Morales?
@@MethodFigures He is his own character, a better Spider-Man that Peter now. With his owns powers and mentors.
I'll riot if the new Batman doesn't have the blue and gray suit
Yasss
Ok so no issue with casting Henry as a different character?
I think people have put Christopher Reeve superman on a such a tall pedestal it no longer matches the reality of the films and makes it impossible for a superman film to be loved by some fans.
Those movies are actually extremely flawed. HOWEVER his Clark Kent/Superman portrayal just got it so right that it's difficult to top
I would say don't be afraid to get fantastical. The weirder the better
The entire room has been soundproofed. I literally don’t know what else I can do haha. This has been a struggle for over 3 years now
@@MintHunterComics That's insane that you still have that much echo lol - how high are your ceilings?
Yes to JSA!!!
As long as Zach Snyder is nowhere near it, I'm sure it will be fine. 😄
Dr manhatten is key to rebooting the dc universe.
I don't think you're taking casual viewers into much consideration by wanting entire rogues galleries already introduced.
I would reboot it by getting rid of Spiderman, x-men and all marvel characters! So it can be a truly DCMU!
lol what?
Wish this would happen
"American way" Superman, would the current audience appreciate that with the current times?
And yet like 18 people watched it 😢😢😢
The American way?!? isn't Superman an undocumented illegal immigrant?!? Luthor would deport the poor guy ;)
I think James Gunn beat you to the punch
We will see!
I respecfully disagree DC should just do standalone movies. Their best movies so far have been when not focused as tie-ins to a shared universe.
Well that, unfortunately, was never going to happen. We've known for years DC was getting a full on shared universe reboot
Buttttt I think the movies should FEEL standalone
@MintHunterComics thats true and unfortunately I feel they are chasing a unicorn dressed in a batsuit with a big S on their chest. But we'll see if they can do it.
I actually liked the DCEU
I'm glad! I didn't, but that's ok!
I'm just worried about James Gunn's cinematography. His movies have a generic sitcom look to them. Nothing beautiful or special.
Honestly, I'd just skip live action. DCEU always works better as animation
JSA should stay off the board.
Don't oversaturate it with tonnes of tie-in TV shows & pointless movies for D list characters. A cinematic universe shouldn't feel like homework
Oh, the DC movie universe. I have no interest in it, nor in the Marvel movies and series. Comics only for me thanks.
