Hwy 140 through Mariposa in particular is known as the "all weather highway" and follows the lowest elevation route into the park, thus it is the least susceptible to snow and chain restrictions.

WFVF They can be required, but not normally needed until later December through early spring. The NPS does require chains in vehicles just in case during winter. If you’re still coming in a few weeks, have a great trip!

Hi my wife and I are heading to Yosemite this January 7 and we’re staying in Madera. Is that too far from the park? And we renting a car that’s probably a front wheel drive so is that a problem for January road condition? Thank u
I would highly recommend getting a 4 wheel drive rental car for January in Yosemite especially if you are driving in and out of the park as you will have to keep putting them on and off when leaving the snowy conditions which happen within a couple of miles of leaving the park.
