I'm 71 and had Caruso on vinyl LPs re-recorded from the shellac 78s but the quality was nowhere near as good as this. Considering Caruso sung and recorded this 116 years ago, the quality of this digital version is amazing.

My dad used to listen to many of the great tenors - he used to virtually force me to listen to Gigli, Caruso, Corelli, etc. As a young kid, I used to think it was silly and laugh to myself as I’d watch him emotionally react to the music, sometimes singing along in Italian, his eyes closed in near reverence of the performance.
I’m 59 now, and wish he was here so I could thank him for being insistent that I listen. What tremendous, wonderful and timeless beauty.
    Thanks, pop 🙏

I'm 80 years old. My grandfather's nephew was Paul Althouse who sang at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Paul was a
Wagnerian specialist and never sang with Caruso, but I recall my grandfather telling me how Paul considered Caruso's voice a "gift from God to man." This recording is proof of that!

      Hello,
Paul Althouse also made many recordings - I have Edison Blue Amberols of him and he recorded many sides for Victor. See a website of Discography of American recordings - which will list many Althouse discs/cylinders. I know he also performed in operas with Rosa Ponselle and others. although not well remembered by most nowadays, those of us who have collected these early recordings as I have for the past 65 years, know his recordings.

My Grandfather came to America from Sicily in 1906. I've been told he sang Caruso arias very well. Our whole family was an opera family and my mother told of the deep heartbreak they all felt when Caruso died in 1921. She said it was like a loss of a dear family member. He will always be the Gold Standard of tenor's!

The biggest aim of this boy in Naples was to become a Singer. His main primary teacher discouraged him and told him that you can't be a singer, your voice is not beautiful, it resembles the sound of shutters squeaking in the wind. his mother's praise and encouragement changed the little boy's life. and became the greatest and most famous opera singer of this childhood.

Caruso was 31 when this recording was made, and at the height of his powers. Considering the primitive system for recording at the time, this is amazing, even the best of remastering cannot achieve much if the original is poor. To have heard him live must have been incredible judging by this performance. I doubt that the adulation he received was the result of hype, he truly had an stunning voice. It never ceases to amaze me that I can sit here in 2022 and listen to something that my teenage grandfather could have heard one hundred and eighteen years ago.

Actually hearing this recording made me decide to upload it to UA-cam to share it with as many people as possible and to create a Caruso channel.
If people think I make money from my channel, think again. $0 money for me, but I did not upload it to make money, but to share it.

My emotions and awe rise when I listen to some of Enrico Caruso's recordings. I have tears. When I am alone, I permit myself to cry. It is not from sadness. Awe? Joy? Empathy. Hard to explain. In my room, alone, I let go. Inexplicable feeling and emotional release. There are other performances in varied genre that affect me this way. This isn't artificial, and I know I'm not unique. And it's not unique to the ladies! :- ) Thank God for Caruso, and for music. AND for audio recording technology so I can be like this in private! Cheers to all.

I met Toscanini’s grandson, Walter in New York after a concert. A very quiet, unassuming sort of fella who was nice enough to pose for a photo with my father.
If only conductors nowadays would follow singers like this, there would be a lot more fine singing going on in the opera world. Caruso was fortunate enough to grow up during a simpler time when the dynamic between singers and orchestras was different. ( he also happened to be one of the greatest tenors who ever lived)

An excellent comment. I have No musical education but think I’m sensitive enough to feel music and I’m a fan of opera. What strikes me in today’s opera performances is conductors tend to be too autonomic, they don’t, as You have written, „follow a singer”, they try to show off while they should give just accompaniment to soloists. I hope to be understandable, though have written this without a dictionary…

I am also 75 years old and the sound of Caruso and other great Italian opera singers can transport me in an instant to my grandparents’ little basement factory in Queens NY where they operated drill presses to the crackling sound of the old Emerson radio on the shelf above the presses. Though I was only 5 years old at the time, I knew by their faces that this music represented a great heartache for them.
One hundred and twenty years have passed since they left Naples, and the loss, though not mine personally, still carries me into a place of tremendous melancholy .
