WILL IT WORK? Small tarp & 11' Hammock RAIN TEST
Вставка

- Can an 8.5' X 8.5' square tarp provide enough coverage to protect an 11' hammock set up from the wind and rain? In the spirit of testing gear and having to see for myself, I had to try it. What do you think? Is it enough coverage for you? Let me know your thoughts about it in the comment section.
Thank you for watching and for your support of the channel,

Thank you for the shout out. That is a great looking setup. Instead of putting come paracord on the continuous loops to help stop the water, put them above the on the tree strap, but under the tarp. In this set-up the straps are long enough that you could have looped the tag end of the strap up and done a loose knot on the working end of the strap but still under the tarp. This would provide two water breaks for the water to go down to the ground instead of traveling to the hammock.
Another fantastic suggestion!!!
I would have never guessed that would work man!! Good Ole Doc!
Same here Tim. I don't think I would have figured that out on my own. Doc is the man
Doc is the man! That has to be a really light setup. Great video!
Thank you.
He sure is. The tarp, hammock, under quilt, all the hardware, straps, stakes and cordage comes in at 3.3 lbs
@@ItsGoodintheWoods very nice!
I loved the test and impressed that it worked. Great suggestion by Doc.
I was impressed as well. I'm glad Doc made the suggestion! I never would have thought to try it
Well done!!! Reminds me of the old Hennessey hammock set up. I used one for a bit that did a diagonal tarp. Definitely pitch it low and it's a good fit! Good call Doc!!
Yeah buddy!!!!
Really awesome that it worked out for you.
Thank you John
Looks comfy and peaceful
I love the sound of rain
Bro said it's coming and it came. Loved how the weather changed mate. I'm a lover of hammock camping. Sad thing is only that I don't have a hammock 🤪
That weather was gnarly! You have to get yourself a hammock
That's good to hear. I've used a 10x10 and its never let me down.
I think a 10 x 10 may be the perfect tarp........might be my next one....maybe
Awesome video Justin I live my hammock set up. Thank you for all that you do
I have really been taking a liking to hammocks this season. So comfortable.
I love hammocks especially in the winter with a good under quilt
A true bear burrito 🌯lmao
Having been down that road (and the asym road), the problems show up when the wind shifts exposing your head and/or your feet to rain. Hanging the hammock closer to the tarp helps some with that, or putting your rain jacket over the head end of your hammock.
I’ve used this similar set up for 2-3 yrs prior to my ENO I use now.
I was never soaked through but my straps would get super saturated in heavy rains.
Just non-optimal for sideways rain and heavy-heavy winds.
Good to hear. Thank you
Wow cosy! That was a test and a half Justin.
Thank you. I really like this set up. I'll be using it more for sure
Pack our fears! And I bet majority of us continue to have a tarp that's bigger than necessary. Great test, might have to try and get over my fear.
It's worth a shot!
I had the experience of rain sleeping in my hammock and a rain tarp with a rain fly camping on Delmarva peninsula
Nothing quite like the sound of rain when you are all comfy inside your sleep system!
Awesome test! Thank you! 🤙😘
Thanks man!
Nice work man.
Thank you
8 foot square tarp is 11 3/8 feet diagonal.
Having seen this set up over the weekend in Vermont, it will work. Like I said though, with your weight in the hammock, you hang lower and will be more exposed to cross wind. Then again, if it’s a fair weather tarp, rock on. Cheers !
Yeah. It has it's limitations, but I am a believer, I believe I will find them LOL
You can compensate for that by hanging the tarp so it's closer to the hammock. Possibly even touching the hammock ridgeline. So when your weight makes the hammock lower, you'll still have coverage. Of course on good nights, hang the tarp high for better ventilation on hot & muggy nights.
That is awesome brother. I have been thinking about a system like that for a long time. I'm going to try hanging one by the lean too next time I go up there. Still going to bring the cot just in case however.😂
Hammocks are so comfortable! I bet you'd love it
That’s awesome. I would have never thought that tarp would work in a blowing rain. 🦑
I was a bit surprised myself. It absolutely has it's limitations, and I am sure I will eventually find them. But, it does work. I know I can also pitch the tarp a bit tighter, and add more guy out lines to secure it even further. I feel like this will be a great fair weather, just in case tarp. Thanks for stopping by man
4:27 - A single-bladed paddle? Nice J-stroke! 👍
I would be concerned if there was enough wind to cause the tarp to buck. I might try it to save weight, but I would secure the tarp with more guy lines, just in case I am routinely days away from a vehicle and a couple of days away from a town, so getting soaked might be more than just an inconvenience, hence my decision to take a Hammock Gear DCF winter tarp with doors on my Appalachian Trail month long section hikes. I also travel solo.
@@danielkutcher5704 Single blade!!! A nice change of pace.
Yeah, this isn't a tarp set up I would rely on exclusively. It leaves a lot to be desired, but it does work. Like you said, add some more guy lines in the nasty stuff. I just like to try stuff. I was surprised at the results, and it is going to save me hundreds of dollars for now. I know it has its limitations, and I am sure I will find them eventually. LOL But I have faith in it as a fair weather set up.
Your reasoning for a bigger tarp is sound. I would like to get a tarp like yours at some point. What I really want at the moment is a DCF 10' x 10" !!!! Thanks for watching and commenting
Grest video. The only thing i am worried about is rain getting on the strap and then seeping into my hanmok. Do you have a work around?
Tie a drip line or 2 onto your hammock loops. Works like a charm
Informative and beneficial video
Thank you
Very nice
Thank you Bud
Very interesting, may I ask how long is the 11 foot hammock from gathered end to end after setup? And how much length does the tarp cover from end to end when setup diagonal?
The length of the hammock will vary with every set up. But the general length is approximately 11' The tarp run on a diagonal like this spans 12'
@@ItsGoodintheWoods good to know, thanks!
Where can I buy the rain cover?
This is a custom tarp a friend made for me. But, you can get dyneema tarps from Hammock Gear. They are amazing. Here is a link if you are interested.

👍👍👍
Thank you
Surprised by the results for sure
I was too.
Nice👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
so how long is the diagonal? 11'?
12'
@@ItsGoodintheWoods nice. I've been using a 11' Cuban hex tarp on my 11ft hammocks for years and never have gotten wet and I've been in lots of serious rain. What's the weight like 5ozs?
@@jacobpoucher That is awesome and encouraging! You are right on, The tarp weighs 5.5oz
@@jacobpoucher The complete hammock set up is 3.3lbs
I just tested a 2m x 2m tarp (6.55 foot) and it was a little too short.
Yeah. Too short. I wouldn't go any smaller than this one 8.5'
But where do you put your backpack?
on a groundsheet under the hammock
Looks light, and tight.
10x10 might be even more, just right. 😂
I think a 10x10 just might be the perfect tarp......
Use carabiners. Cheers. Bye
for what?
