I've worked at a gas station for over seven years now and there are so many safety precautions in place to prevent gas spills that you have to go out of your way to make this happen. Breakaway cables, internal safety shut offs, manuel shut offs, the whole nine yards.. And the fire department has training and very specific procedures to handle this. They would not be lost as to what to do.

In 2005 he and I were on a vacation on San Pedro Island, Belize and Pop had to show the fireman how to use the pumper truck to draw water from the ocean to fight a fire. He stayed at the pumper to ensure safe operation. Me? I was a USMC crewman/technician on huey's and cobras, I stood there useless until he told me to manage hoses so the firemen could move into the fire area. Cracks me up even today.

I am a gas station clerk and this is driving Me nuts. First of all, there's button to turn ALL pumps off. Ours is inside on our register but we've all seen them outside too. Second of all, modern pumps don't break like that. People drive off with the pump still in their car (it's happened 5 times this year), there's a safety mechanism that breaks off the handle and keeps the rest intact.
Lastly, the spot for new fuel is usually more out of the way and I've never had a fuel truck driver park whenever they felt like it.
Granted I'm one person at one modern gas station so others might have different experiences but none of this would happen at the one I work at. (And probably almost no others either)

Last year, I had the 'fun' job of emptying fareboxes off city busses every night into vaults while workers were gassing the busses up and sweeping them out. On occasion, workers forget to detach the nozzles from the busses before moving the busses to the next stage of the nightly cleaning, and the way we didn't have fuel spewing forth in an alarming manner was the hoses at each of the four pumps had a point on them that could pull apart without a fuel leakage happening. Reattachment isn't difficult, which is a good thing, especially on weeknights when there are several hundred busses that need fueling and cleaning.

They could adapt it for the show but it had to be real. First the writers thought that would be boring, then they started to read the logs and could not believe the things fire departments had to respond to. The naked girl with her toe stuck in the faucet, that was a real rescue.

Emily Dickinson. The writer for the book series that the TV show Bones is based on. Wanna try that again, bud? Hmm?

That's not to say there have never been good writers who were women. There were, and probably still are a few. But there is a difference between a writer that happens to be a woman, and a 'woman writer'. This show is made by the latter.
