    To the superfitial he left his public persona so they talk about him, to the arts and humanity he left a legacy of the most admirable body of work as a result of effort and a talent only rivaled by figures of the renaissance. His intellectual curiosity was intense, milimetrical and knew no boundaries, starting as a young man and ended the day he died. A notorious "apolitical" person, despite the lifelong goal of the left-leaning art critics to prove the contrary and tarnish his legacy. In his later years a psychiatrist made an evaluation and confirmed what was evident, that behind the crafted public persona was an intimate, solitary, silent, worker of the arts and a borderline genius.
    His work stands for itself, hopefully you study that, hopefully chronologically, and avoid third party interpretations.

    He was certainly a brilliant artist. I wonder how he would have done without Gala. She was the business end early on. His private life had much to be desired. Somewhat of a pervert & a fascist. His last years were miserable & he lived in a dark room his last days following a tragic fire. But credit where it's do. I was definitely influenced to pursue an art career by Dali.

    I, personally, think that his sexual side was greatly hindered by his partner, who wanted to control him in anyway possible for financial gain. He expressed certain idiotic sexual expressions about Hitler, that were absurd, but that's the extent of it. People freaked out, and he escaped into his art, like most great artists do. To try and tie such a man to a few statements and artistic endeavors would be foolish. Sometimes artist do and say the most ridiculous things, but aren't even beholden to whatever it was that they said. Now, doing such things are entirely different in nature. He never tried to have sex with a female Hitler, unless perhaps, he had been emoting about Gala all along?

    Dali was an original and good painter, not a genius. Of all his work, there are merely a handful of canvasses that will survive the times, especially the early works with landscapes and telephones. His Narcissus myth is a great work, as is the Premonition of the Civil War. The value of his work is also important as an antidote to modernism and the formalistic art establishment of his days. All in all, artists like Picasso and Dali have been greatly overrated. Dali's amusing performance acts are, with hindsight, embarrassing kitsch, as many of his works fall within that genre. His narcissism and anxiety about recognition drove him to escapades which his real artistic talent did not need...... no wonder he was popular among people who had no idea about art or culture.
    It seems that his wife Gala was the driving force behind his 'selling' of himself and his commercial successes; as he describes in his 'autobiography', it was she who moulded him into the persona we got to know. But this persona hindered his natural talents to develop. A case in point is the Tuna Fishing, a large canvas where he tried to combine all kinds of different painting trends within one work. But all the different stylistic elements jarr, and the commercial picture of an advert male figure in front makes a joke of the whole. And yet, many details demonstrate his great painterly talents.

    • @oirampeceda2409
      @oirampeceda2409 6 місяців тому

      Greatly overrated? Who are you, an art expert? If a million people say that he isn't overrated, and a few say that he is, what does that say, especially, since he has already passed the test of time?

    • @JohnBorstlap
      @JohnBorstlap 6 місяців тому

      @@oirampeceda2409 His work has not passed the test of time. It will take much longer to do that. And yes, I happen to be an art expert. But anybody with some experience of watching works of art will confirm what is said about Dali as above.... because, then you can compare, and look through the superficial outside. I think you should simply see much more art, from any period.
