I have an installation tip I'd like to share with anyone installing their own Speedplay Zero cleats. FORGET the damn torque wrench!! Using mine-and tightening to the recommended level-caused my Zero cleats to be nearly impossible to clip into. Do this instead: Get some red threadlock, use your plain phillips head screwdriver, and go around the four screws again and again to make sure all four of them have been evenly turned beyond that first "resistance" bump that's designed into the screws. If you go tighter than this you're going to ruin what is a fairly easy cleat entry process. I've installed almost a dozen Speedplay X pedals over the past decade and used this technique with no problems, and I should have used it on my first pair of Zero cleats. Also, I found the perfect lube in 3-in-One's PTFE lubricant (available at Amazon and elsewhere) after using sprays for years (just because I had that kind in my garage already). The drip applicator helps you get the lube exactly where it needs to be.

Only clipless pedals I will ever use. Such a genius design and concept. Caters for any level of cycling skills.

Speedplay is the best thing that ever happened to my knees. This video is old. The newer "Walkable" version are much easier to walk around in, and no longer need the cafe covers (they are part of the system now)

Not many of us have a set of torque-specific screwdrivers- I have installed my Zero cleats without any problems by "hand tightening," but if anything I find that I lose cleat fastening screws if I don't inspect and retighten them regularly. What would be the signs that you have overtightened either the cleat fastening screws or the black/silver mounting screws? Otherwise, I love the Zero pedals!

90% of people complaining about the complexity of this design don't even know how to replace a flat. or to inject liquid latex into tubulars. jfc, what's so complicated. this is the best thing that can happen to your knees. they wear off, yes, but so do your knees if you wear standard "no play" cleats. i'd rather have the cleats wear off than my knees.. any idea how much a knee surgery costs?

Hi. I have been using speedplay zero cleats (yellow) for the past 3 months. Usually at home on a power trainer. I have been riding about 10 hours a week. After inspecting the bottom of the shoe I noticed that all metal parts have rusted badly, literally full of rust. I tried to remove the rust with WD40 product but without any help. Do you have any recommendation to prevent that from happening in the future.

It seems like you can really dial the position in. My ultegras drive me insane everytime I want to micro adjust cleat position.
But, with over 50k miles on Shimano, switching makes me nervous!

I had the x series speed play pedals for 15 years loved them. Got the new zero play speed play pedals, it it so hard to disengage , Ive hurt my knee, ankle and achilles tendon. is there a way to adjust the amount of force need to disengage ??

    • @AncoraImparoPiper
      @AncoraImparoPiper 4 роки тому

Lube as instructed and then engage and disengage at least ten times in succession. To disengage with ease, step on the pedal with your weight and then rotate the foot outwards. Easy.

I rode speedplay pedals since they first came out and have ridden thousands of miles on them and they were great. So, why screw up something that works so well? Now it is impossible to replace the X cleat unless you want to go on Ebay and pay some gouger 3 to 4 times the original value. Speedplay, have some compassion for those who have supported you since first started and once again make the original equipment available

It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

I wonder if anyone else questions why they do not use stainless steel screws. I have had to retire many a shoe due to the rusting and fusing to the shoe via the corroded mounting screws... I ride in the tropics and shoes are regularly saturated with sweat. Seems a small added cost to make a great product even better. I am trying to find a stainless version of the stainless 5mm flat mounting screws.

Cant get mine enough to the front of the shoe. Could be related to my shimano shoes, or the shoes are too small

Speedplay Zero in my opinion also has a major design flaw: both the cleat and the pedel are plastic so they both wear out over time. So why the pedal is only partly metal is beyond me...

  • @detmer87

I tried Speedplay Zero but they are expensive plastic junk that wears way too fast and starts to creak when worn more then 50% (requiring lube/WD40). Instead of buying new cleats I bought Shimano 105 kit for the same price and never looked back.

I installed the bade and cleats fine but have a hell of hard time snapping the cap of the cleats in! It just won't snap in! Terrible design. It should be easier to get them in. The instruction just doesn't work.

What a shame…I had one set of these since 2014 and just got a new set. The new design is terrible and I hurt myself pretty badly today because I couldn’t disengage. I wouldn’t recommend these to anyone after wahoo bought them and changed them

WAY too much crap to install cleats. You need a degree to know how to install them. This video does not show very well.

You should just stick to having the bike shop mechanic work on your bike.... You have no mechanical aptitude or common sense. Stick to commenting on something about which you might have a clue....
