  • This special edition of the Axe of Creation is in response to many subscribers, whom after watching my Adam Jones lesson; wanted to know what I knew about TooL's The Pot. Done and done was the answer, we love TooL here at Axe and hope you enjoy this lesson. Technically speaking The Pot is no harder than any other Adam Jones composition BUT it can be a little tricky, especially when performing in a live situation. Let this be a lesson to all you Axers out there, I encourage anyone and everyone to send in inquiries about lesson topics and songs. I will always get to everyone's request as soon as humanly possible. Thank you and keep em' comin, so we can stay slayin!

    Its mind blowing how simple yet difficult Adam Jones playing style is. Definitely a one of a kind guitarist. Its even more mind blowing how you've mastered his style. Best videos on youtube! Im watching them everyday, I've learned an insane amount of knowledge. Im all self taught so Ive had no real proper music training. Thanks again, long live the AXE!!

      +Mediocre Guitar Covers Much appreciated! His playing is very straightforward yet subtle, dynamic, and full of variation...which makes it difficult to replicate.

      +axeofcreation He's definitely a master of variation.

      TOTALLY AGREE! Its all in his rhythm aswell. Jones's Rhythm is magical! Id take rhythm over fret wanking anytime. Another master is Carpenter from Deftones. Just brilliant, elegant and yet so simple. LESS IS MORE!

    Been watching your Tool videos. I love the fact that you say "either way is correct, its the same note". I can't stand in other videos where they say "this is the correct way because its how such and such plays it". Or the comments that follow stating how "You're playing it wrong", when its the same just a different position. It's music people. It's meant to be expressed creatively and yes even the artist that created it will play if differently. My favorite guitarist never played the same song the same each night let alone the solo as recorded.

    The section played at 6:32 has a different chord between each power chord change. The G & B strings are fretted at the second fret to give the open chord a different sound. So you would strum open 2x then fret GB 2x, 2nd fret power chord 2x then go back to GB 2x, 3rd power 2x then GB 2x, 5th power chord. You can hear the variation in the song and if you watch live footage you will see that he is fretting the G & B strings for that part.

    Thanks for the video. I've been playing for decades and this song, as cool as it is, was rather daunting. The way you broke it down was awesome and made it look easy. without being pretentious or using too much theory, you make this song very accessible. I don't comment much on videos, but I just wanted to let you know how instrumental you were in helping me to learn this song.

      It's crunchy, reminds me of later Pumpkins tone e.g. everlasting gaze.. not saying a great song, but I feel like there is similarity in tone. It's raspy and rippy.

    @hceely Thank you so much. Honestly, I find the most challenging thing about Tool is replicating the songs in live situations rather than being able to play the songs. Having all the effects dialed in just right along with having absolute control over your dynamics. Rosetta Stoned is definitely a challenge, especially because of it's length and like you said variation. The second half of that song is so fun to play!

    @Mattigw Thanks a lot!! You should definitely be learning the music you love and want to play. No Quarter would be quite the endeavor. There is a lot to that song, lots of guitar tracks going on. One of their best tracks. It's like Zeppelin wrote it for Tool.

  • @Thelonelyscavenger
    @Thelonelyscavenger 12 років тому +1

    The guitar riffs are usually D minor pentatonic and fairly easy, but together as a band is when the really magic happens with Tool. Their music is highly progressive, yet they're very subtle about it. Adam Jones doesn't playing blistering solos or sweeping arpeggios, he's contributing in a subtle way letting the other instruments to be heard instead of being selfindulgent.
