  • Two years ago the US government restricted the sales certain advance AI chipsets from companies such as Nvidia and AMD to china. This lead to NVidia resigning and selling less powerful AI chipsets to china,
This was a big blow to Chinese tech giants who needed advance chipsets to power their operations, as a result of this companies such as Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei accelerated the development of their own AI chips to avoid any future damages that may occur in their near future
And this investments seams to be paying off as latest updates confirms that the demand for Huawei Ascend 910B AI CHIP is on on the rise prompting NVidia to dropped the price of its most advanced AI processors in china as a result of stiff completion from Chinese tech giant Huawei. does it mean china has finally catch up with the us in the making of advance AI chips and how far is china away from gaining self-reliance in the making of chipsets especially AI chipsets as the world is transitioning into an AI driven future
what makes Ai chips very important is the fact that the architectural design of this chips allows this chips to perform AI task with greater efficiency as compared with the normal chipset ,
As a result of the restriction on the sales of AI chipsets to Chinese tech firms . NVidia had to redesign a special chip for sales in china just to comply with the us sanction, NVidia release three chipsets specifically for china for which the most powerful among them was the H20 chipset ,this new chip was not as powerful and advance when compared with chipsets such as A100, A800, H100, H800 chipset sold by NVidia which were available and sold in international market.
This new development led to the Chinese firm such as Huawei to up their game especially in the area of AI chip making leading to massive

Thanks for an accurate account of the AI chip technology available in China . Many commentators are saying the new Ascend chips outperform all Nvidia chips . This type of fake, misleading reporting does not help China's chip R&D programmes.

This is only the opening salvo on AI chips. You can bet that Huawei, Alibaba, and Tencent are working feverishly to create their own AI chips to meet their needs. The environment in China is to develop self-sufficiency in semiconductors and there are over 2000 Chinese companies of various sizes and specialties working towards that goal. China is focused on a complete domestic supply chain from raw materials to design, to developmental software, to production equipment, and chemicals and masks needed to make advanced and mature semiconductor chips.

China still uses the H20, it all depends on what the tech firm intends to use the chips for. The only difference here is that many firms are buying the Asend chips from more than the H20

Huawei's Ascend 910-B was introduced as a rival chip to NVidia's H20, which was designed for the Chinese market. The Ascend is reportedly faster and shows superior performance, and commands a higher price.

It's not true, all the tests are shown for 1 Ghz, so for the real applications the results will be very different like with chinese GPUs which can't handle most of the games, as NVidia and AMD do but their GPUs were also more powerful than NVidia, it's also applicable to chinese CPUs which can't handle most of the software but they are "more powerful" than Intel or AMD.
In conclusion, the powerful lithography machines are only manufactured by one company and China uses quite old ones at the moment. The most advanced EDA tools (Synopsis, Cadence) are only american ones, so chinese have only access to some nm, they are partially sanctioned. Their software will be available but probably it will be considerably worse than the western ones, they don't have much professional experience compared to american counterparts.
It's a lost case, chinese CPUs have been manufactured for about 20 years but they are still very bad.

" The U.S. finds no evidence that the Chinese smartphone and telecom giant Huawei can produce smartphones with advanced semiconductors at scale, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said last year on september 2023

@@paulzhang1310 You're wrong, study this subject. They produce 7 nm not directly on ASML machine but by using special techniques and layers, it's much more expensive and eventually they won't be able to reduce the process size. No any evidence that NVidia cut the prices because of this chip.
If you're so sure that chinese components are the best, throw your own PC out of the window and buy pure chinese CPU, GPU and motherboard, good luck with Huawei smartphone without official Google Play and right now Huawei again uses Snapdragon's chips which weren't sanctioned. They still prefer american chips, not chinese which can't support software properly.
AMD's GPUs show a lot of raw numbers which are considerably higher than NVidia's but in real applications they are usually weaker because software optimisation is the key, not those numbers and no any chinese CPUs (produced for about 20 years), no any GPUs and even no mobile CPUs which would outperform american chips in real applications.
It's a lost case and they can't produce the key technologies. They won't surpass ASML which has been developing machines for about 40 years and it's a monopoly.

How about they release the chips to some independent parties for reviews and comparisons? Until that happens this is just rumors.
