H.H. (Hob) Warren ran this store, pharmacy, cotton gin office, soda fountain, post office and General Store until his death in 1955. Mr. Warren lived in the White House pictured near the store. In its day, a warehouse stood between the store and the White House. Multiple cotton gins and livestock sale barns were owned by Mr. Warren in and around Appleton.
Doc Warren (Hob Warren's brother) lived in the store's second floor and often would provide medicine in the night to the sick. During depression times The Store saw no child went without a Christmas present.
I am H.H. Warren's grandson and spent several days around The Store as a youngster after it closed to the public.
What a wonderful place & story. So glad they preserved it's history.
WONDERFUL STORE !!!!
It's become a favorite for motorcyclist. Great destination to ride out to and eat lunch.
Reminds me of my grandparent's country store in S.W. VA. Sold everything - food, clothing, shoes, hats, cattle feed, hardware, gas pump out front, potbelly stove for the winter. Neighbors would linger, talk politics and gossip. Poor folks could trade eggs, hams, or gensing for coffee, flour, sugar, tobacco. I learned so much growing up there. Store closed in 1968 and was torn down. It was a different world.
Looks so good would love to visit.
It was first called the Hall-Kelton store. It was built by John Jackson Kelton (1866-1907) and Hugh Hall. John Jackson Kelton was my great uncle.
