With all the money in the walls of Wario’s castle, why does he care about losing 3 little bags?
Maybe it’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message. About the money.
Some unknown schmucks broke into his castle with intent to screw Wario over. Money gathering is just a general matter of principle for Wario. Revenge is what he's truly after.

The fact that Wario has coins all over the castle but gets mad at losing 9 of them just shows how much "Warioness" there is inside of him.
To be fair, those 9 coins could all be silver coins, which means Wario just got 900 coins stolen from him. He'll certainly need that back to pay for all the water damage repairs.
Hey, previously Wario fought over six golden coins, so of course he's going to make a big deal of nine.

Love the ongoing mention of "Warios" which implies the existence of a species.
Wario's different clothes over the course of Mario games is not actual clothing, it is his skin. Warios have evolved over time and their skin has changed with them, culmintaing in the pinnacle of evolution, the fantabulous Mario Golf Super Rush Wario.
The species long gone, since the incident of New Super Mario Bros 2, when an eponymous plumber Mario Mario consumed all the currency in the land, stripping Warios of their sustenance and causing them to extinct.

I think his greatest achievement is text-commentating games that don't have a lot of dialog.
I feel like I should really go back and play the other Wario Lands, but with 4 being my first one that might seem a bit hard to me.

Some people do the short secret route through the story first. I'm guessing you're going for the "main" route first, either to lay some groundwork or because it's one of the longest routes possible and you want to prolong the number minigame's rule change as long as you can.
My first route split away from the main route at the end of World 1, but rejoined it later and didn't diverge again.
Nah, the new minigame rule is fine. This just feels like the proper way to do it, I guess.
Is this the short secret route where the Black Sugar Pirates chuck a sleeping Wario out of the castle in the dead of night and claim it for their own? Cos I recall actually starting out on that line, inadvertently exiting back to the main line and not knowing how to get back.
Oh boy, this game. Have fun playing through it about 10 times just to get everything.

The architecture in Wario's castle is somehow less questionable than Mario's. Fragile walls but no death traps and it doesn't fall apart from the flooding water seeing as it's mostly bricks
This game brings back a lot of childhood memories. Loved it as a kid.
This is gonna be an interesting playthrough. I haven't watched your other Wario Land playthroughs yet, so this is my first one. I'm curious to see how you commentate on the game's actions.
Ah, here we are, then. You know, after the last time I rewatched your WL3 playthrough, I made a custom model of the big golf coins, so others could enjoy that slice of that game in other engines. Mostly Source.

I wouldn't be surprised if after all the stories of Link breaking pots and jars Wario would figure how satisfying it is and would try to recreate that feeling with his own finances. Wario summoned the genie while still on Kitchen Island so where else would the genie cause his castle to appear? Syrup Castle was destroyed by a bomb left by Syrup so Wario's castle probably replaced where what was left of Syrup Castle with the genie's magic. Syrup fled as a result of Wario stealing the lamp so she and her crew probably fled in the SS Teacup since it wasn't sunk by the end of Wario Land 1.
