In some of the flashback Mario games like Yoshi's island it's revealed that Bowser never really spent any time around his real parents. As an infant prince all he had was the wizard Kamek to look over him. So yeah, he probably does have a sad childhood worth movie exploration!
Hey we might get his brother from the lost levels the blue Koopa. He could be the better of the two and succeeds in everyway possible. They could view bowser like a stepchild which would create contrast. They would put kamek by his side to keep him out of the way. They could show that bowser made all of his success on his own.
Jack Black is a decent, kind, funny human being just trying to do his best in everything he does. His amount of caring is infectious and it makes me happy to see him succeed and be happy.

The fact that his love song just repeats his crush's name endlessly as if that's supposed to work is that perfect knife's edge between comedy and tragedy- like, if he wasn't such a terrible person, it would be incredibly sad, but since he's so cruel and arrogant you have no pity for him and don't feel bad laughing at him. It's simple on the surface, but there's a lot of thought being put into the simplicity.
The reactions to Bowser adoring Peach were even funnier from the people who don't play Mario games and didn't see it coming. This was perfect execution.
You really see Bowser’s softer side in the Paper Mario series so seeing him talking about Peach and singing about her really reminded me of those games.
There are many moments in the mario games where you can see Bowser is more than just a villain. He is a king who is orphaned early on and in the old 80s animated movie he also was in love with peach. But its great that more non-mario fans and even some mario fans can learn more about these characters. Great job Jack!

That's my suspicion for a part 2, Peach is actually the one kidnapped by an insane Bowser, and Mario and Luigi fulfil their classic roles as super heroes.

Odyssey he terrorized several Kingdoms, plunders them and unleashed his army, as well as captured a lot of people all just so he could have a Fairytale Wedding on the Moon with Peach. Same with the original Paper Mario where he stole the power of Wish Granting to make himself invincible and carry Peaches castle into the sky while trying to kill Mario literally just so he could try to marry Peach. He will conquer the world and make Peach his Queen, in that order.
They should have Ludwig have a fued with Bowser wanting to take over the kingdom (thinkn Bowser is not fit to rule due to his weakness for Peach) and the rest of the koopa kids in the middle of it and Ludwig voiced by Brad Dourif
