    That snakes don't feel pain because they're cold blooded.
    I was reading about rattlesnake round-ups and the "rattle snake queen" used that as a justification for the cruelty of these animals.

    *Myth originates from snake charmers*
    They sewed the snake's mouth, leaving an opening just for the tongue so the snake won't bite.
    They told the audience that the snake stings with it's tongue so the show will be interesting.
    _Of course, all of those snakes died..._

    • @arandomstartreknerd7261
      @arandomstartreknerd7261 6 років тому +138

      Yeah, snake charmers used to do nasty things to snakes. They would take a nonvenomous snake and jab a couple porcupine quills into it's head to make it look like an eyelash viper for the show, and of course, said snake would die. They also would remove the fangs of venomous snakes I believe (I read about this a long time ago so I'm not 100% sure), which was also probably fatal and was certainly painful.

      @@skinman4207 The amount of people I've had to educate on this myth is nothing short of astonishing. It just goes to show just how little the average person knows about snakes and how perpetuated these media stereotypes also are. Only one person has tried to argue that large snakes can eat an average person after I told them the reality. Sure a super large snake could potentially swallow a smaller person if they went feet first, but that's extremely rare. It's generally only small children that could be at risk from being swallowed by a giant anaconda or burm/retic. It's nutty how many people believe that they size people up lol..

    I think the Number 1 myth is snakes are always "aggressive". 99% of snakes only bite for food purposes or for defense. I HATE the saying " If it was a snake it would have bit me" because someone didn't see something in front of them. I try to explain to people that a snake is more scared of you (a giant 6ft tall monster predator from his level) and will run if given the chance. Humans defend themselves when threatened. Why would a snake be any different?

    • @ReigneWolvenshire
      @ReigneWolvenshire 6 років тому +8

      "If it were a snake it would have bit me" As in, it was close enough that a snake could have bitten them. If people are too close, a snake may defensively strike. So the saying isn't without some truth.

      @@battlebear437 it was banned by IHS in the UK, which means spuder bp's won't be allowed for sale at any IHS shows/events. Some people are speculating that this will roll into a van on private sale as well, but it is still legal to sell spider bp's privately.
      The controversy is about the neurological effects on the animal. Spiders (along with many other single gene morohs and morph combos) have a neurological side effect called wobble. It can have very minimal effect on the animal's quality of life or it can cause severe issues like chronic stargazing or the inability to effectively stike prey. Wobble can increase or decrease in severity throughout the snake's life and cannot be line bred to reduce or eliminate the effect.
      Personally, I think it is silly to ban one gene for wobble when others have it. Spider gets a bad rap because it is the oldest, most common gene with wobble, but some combos can have effects, like kinking, that require euthanasia if they aren't fatal (champagne x spider is one of a handful that is a fatal combo), and there is no controversy about those. 🙄

    the myth about the vertical pupils meaning venomous probably comes from central europe
    I live in Germany and for all the 6-7 native snake species here it is true that coincidently all the venomous have vertical eyes and the non venomous have round eyes
    so it is an easy way of seeing if it is a dangerous one or not for people who otherwise don't know much about snakes and reptiles in general... as long as they really are just local ones

      IMO, that comes from most people being unable to identify a snake at a glance.
      Let's be real, most people who are not familiar with snakes probably wouldn't be able to tell if a snake is venomous or not, especially if it's big, brightly colored, or simply a species of snake they've never seen before.
      Show someone a picture of a python (any kind), and ask them to identify the species + whether it's venomous or not. Chances are, they'd probably get the answer wrong, unless they or someone they know keeps snakes.

      Yes, it's a myth. Many snakes will flatten their heads when they are threatened venomous or not. And while many pit vipers will have slightly v-shaped head naturally, elapids like coral snakes will not. You're better off just looking up the snakes in your area and learning to identify them. :)

      This comes from the fact that vipers have that triangular head. But I mean, I fail to feel sorry for the guy who tries to cuddle a taipan on the basis that it doesn't have a triangular head so it must be harmless.
