    It’s probably not the right financial decision for a uni/college student but if you think about it like this: you have the industry standard microphone now, there’s literally not a lot better which means you’ll probably never have a reason to upgrade your microphone. I have the mv7 which is the little brother to the sm7b which I use for discord and for in game chat, I also got it on an impulse buy which at the time in Australia the mv7 was like $300 but I got it because I knew that I wouldn’t really need to upgrade my mic.

    Yet another one of those videos with "you shouldn't buy SM7B but I have one and I love It". Dude, are you for real? Why not skip the entire wannabe level of podcaster and jump to a pro level with the right tools, eh? It's cheaper too in the long run.

    I have one in my mic collection (yes I know, collection, but I'm an audio nerd....) and it sits tucked away in its box. Looks good, great build, superb plosive resistance but in truth it sounds a bit thick, dark and woofy. Something like the GoXLR mic is less than half the cost and more neutral with equal build, plus easier to interface. let's be honest, the audio from something like the $50 Razer Mini, a small USB mic when mounted on a boom arm is going to sound just as good for podcasters, especially with a tiny bit of EQ - when the listener/viewer cannot see the mic and therefore doesn't have expectation bias.

    Great mic I own it and also agree you don't need it AT ALL. but we do have to admit we are a bit hypocritical saying that. and it may be a well known mic that has stood the test of time, being the top for decades if you consider older models that really sound mostly the same. But I'd consider it the best Dynamic mic, not the best mic. Would love to have a shotgun mic and a condenser mic, it's just different quality that this mic doesn't have, nor do they have compared to this one. truly is preference at the end of the day.

    I am gonna use it together with my conderser mic whichever situation call for it. In some case I don’t like the ssss and sometimes I sing then I used the condensor but I will rap so I switch to the sm7b. Just max out the volume in the pc and the 2i4 scarlett and the mic won’t clip red just what I wanted. To me recording sound is more important than what I use to recorded with. U can’t say buy more expensive condensor it will fix problem but it will created its own problem. Live mic I use a blue yeti so it’s depend on how it’s used.

    The SM7B is - to me - not worth it. And I wouldn’t even call it the best. In multiple ways even. Yes, it’s a nice set of features you get with it, that makes it an easy recommendation. But it comes with short comings, that I for myself cannot ignore.

    • @MichaelW.1980
      @MichaelW.1980 2 роки тому +1

      1) It’s big. This is an issue, because it’s size makes people wanting to place it „out of the way“ earlier. The bigger it is, the faster it becomes an issue. I own a RØDE Procaster and together with the optional WS-2 windscreen, which is pretty much a precondition to use it, it’s similar in diameter to the SM7B and it’s secondary wind screen. In other words: It’s blocking a lot of you from view, the same way it blocks much of your surroundings from your own view. I for myself opted for the Shure Beta 58a despite being able to afford both, the Shure SM7B and the Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 at the same time without much trouble, just on the size issue alone. Though by now, after learning how dynamic microphones actually work and appreciating the implications of the fact that they are so quiet it’s not the only issue anymore. And already brought me to the next short coming.

    • @MichaelW.1980
      @MichaelW.1980 2 роки тому +2

      2) it is stupidly quiet. And please don’t bother with the usual comment about the use of cloud lifter, because it does not fix the issue, that I am talking about here. The low output of the SM7B is an issue, because of it’s self noise. Before anyone starts with claims about the SM7B not having self noise: Oh yes, it very much does! Even if it’s components don’t add any noise, due to the impedance of 150 Ohms, it has a thermal noise of about -133dBV / -131dBu. And if you take a look at the output of the microphone, realizing, that nobody, who talks normally reaches 94dB SPL, you have to acknowledge the fact, that this easily can become an issue. The highest signal to noise ratio possible drops from 74dB down to 66dB, even if you talk right up to the foam of the SM7B. At 5cm / 2 inches to the foam, you’re down to 60dB and at 25cm / 10 inches it’s down to 50dB. Imagine a noise level just 50dB below whatever your signal level would be. Talking about a signal strength of -12dBFS, you’re left with a noise floor of -62dBFS, even if your room was perfectly quiet. I want to emphasize here, that these are the lowest possible noise level already, bypassing the topic of noisy preamplifiers, because it’s the microphone’s own self noise, even if your preamps EIN is as low as the microphones self noise. Even with a low noise preamp in the interface or with an in-line preamp, you get a lot less than these numbers.
      An Example: I have an Interface with 60dBV of Gain, an EIN of -129dBu (that is -131dBV) and a maximum input of +10dBu (that is +8dbV). Between my preamp EIN and my microphone thermal noise, there is 2dBV of difference. And since the max input determins, what the interface considers + / - 0dB on the input, the microphone input gets 8dB quieter on top of that. And thus the 3 SNRs from before shrink down to 56dB touching the foam, 50dB at 5cm / 2 inches from the foam and a measly 40dB at 25cm / 10 inches from the foam.

    • @MichaelW.1980
      @MichaelW.1980 2 роки тому +1

      3) Since so many people praise the SM7B for allegedly being oh so good in blocking room noise it doesn’t stop there. You have to use the SM7B as close as possible, in order to get the best SNR possible, not only by using less gain and such lowering the self noise of the microphone (and the preamplifier) but also to raise your voice in loudness, so it is as far as possible above the room noise. While dynamic microphones indeed are better in rejecting ambiance noise, it doesn’t sidestep the need of heeding physics. And what’s more: Dynamic microphones need to be used closer than condenser microphones to begin with, in order to get the best possible recording of your voice, for the simple fact, that your voice literally is the only power source for that type of microphone. But we don’t even need to bother this fact. The SM7B isn’t particularly good at rejecting ambiance noise, because it has such a broad pickup pattern, unusually broad for being advertised as a regular cardioid pickup pattern. Let’s not start with reasoning here. But it’s not entirely wrong to say pickup patterns are BS.

    • @MichaelW.1980
      @MichaelW.1980 2 роки тому +1

      4) Many people praise it for having such a rich and warm low end. But when You listen to it, you can not unhear the fact, that it goes ridiculously low . It actually adds bass response down to frequencies your voice doesn’t have, if you use it up close. But I have to use it up close for the noise reason. So either I have too much proximity effect induced bass below my actual voice, or I have a quite high noise level. I didn’t want to make this tradeoff.

    • @MichaelW.1980
      @MichaelW.1980 2 роки тому +1

      Remember the Beta 58A I mentioned? Yes, it still gets boxy, if used super close, but at the same time it’s way louder, because the super cardioid pickup pattern does a better job at pulling the voice, so I could use it at twice the distance, if need be. That being said, my microphone sounds great, even up close on my mouth. That’s why I use the narrow pickup pattern up close for better ambiance noise rejection. In fact, it’s easily 6dB quieter than the SM7B in terms of ambiance noise. Also the output is way louder, resulting in less gain needed and such a self noise 3dB below the SM7B. So to sum it up: The sound in the highend has more bite and in the low end doesn’t boom. And the overall noise floor is so low, that I could almost get away with no post processing. And the Beta 58A is smaller and thus less obstructing - yes, even with the needed optional accessories, a wind shield and shock mount. And lastly, even with the accessories needed, it’s way cheaper. That’s a win-win-win-win situation for me, tho sound wise, it might not be for everyone, being clearer than the SM7B and even the SM58.
