I like the theory I put together from reading other comments. The gunsmith was telling the truth and that accident really happened. Sammy fell into the river and Jasper didnt find him, so he thinks he drowned. BUT the townsfolk either found him (in a really bad neardeath shape) and decided to kill him ("relieve from his missery") or just decided to not help him at all, let him to die. They never told that to Jasper and they regreted it later. That would be the reason why they are reffering to this incident like a "kill" and are ashamed of it.

I remember seeing a theory that Sammy survived being thrown into the river and that he grew up into the Feral Man you can find in Roanoke Ridge, but that might just be someone conflating two vaguely similar stories together. The Feral Man's journal says that he ran away from his family in 1882, which would be over 15 years before the events of RDR2 - probably too long for the people of Rhodes to still call it "that incident from a few years back".

RDR2 has a grim and melancholic story but it doesn't even compare to the eerie and disturbing lore in its background world. Every town in this game and its residents are somehow cursed or haunted by dark secrets that occasionally lead to some downright depressing stories like this gunsmith and his son. No open-world half as engrossed me in its world and lore as this game.

Though im not sure that could be, the gunsmith was with him the entire time supposedly.

Her grave stone says "Loving mother and wife" and then "She didn't suffer fools". She's most likely Sammy's mother. And it seems she probably died around the same time as Sammy.

The camper, jasper and the townsfolk basically tell three different stories, it's hard to believe they're all the same. Also, judging by the pictures, Sammy was a bit too old and big to be thrown into the river by a rifle's recoil unless it was a damn elephant gun, not to mention he should've been able to use a gun by that age.
This, and the sign on the drawing, almost makes me think Jasper might have had two sons, R. and Sammy, and he either lied about how sammy died, or in his grief, he's misremembering and mixing two events.

I can't remember where I read this theory or who originally posted it, but somewhere someone speculated that the The Wolf Man is Sammy all grown up.
The thought goes that Jesper was a strict father who wanted Sammy to be an outdoors man and successful hunter (or at least someone who could intelligently take over the shop after he passed away), while Sammy was gentler soul and didn't want to hunt/kill animals, and had no interest in his father's lifestyle. So in an effort to make Sammy man up, Jesper took Sammy out to the river with a rifle, had him shoot it, then lost him in the river where he presumably drowned.
But if you look at the Wolf Man's diary in his cave, he talks about how he used an accident by the river to stage an escape from his father and start the life he always wanted to live - away from people and in harmony with nature. (I forget the exact wording he uses and I haven't reread the letter in a while, so I might be messing up some details).
Nothing explicitly says Sammy and the Wolf Man are one in the same, but things do seem to connect.

if jasper took his son out to a river, chances are that river might've been the river that seperates the swamp, the one where you get ambushed by the raiders, and if sammy were to survive the rivers current, there's a chance that he either was found by the raiders, and either tortured then executed or kidnapped and never seen again, or he was found by the night folk, who mutilated him, hung his body all over the swamps where some limbs might've decomposed/ got eaten to the point where we can't find him because his corpse no longer exists. however, these are ideas are likely not true, as the townsfolk most likely had a connection with his death which then leads to the braithwaites and the raiders, which then leads to another theory, as archiblad macgregor said, "half of businesses in town are owned by the grays!" which means that there's a possibility that the grays own or are partners with jasper, so this would be the timeline:
Sammy recoils into the river, presumebly drowning, he survives only to be captured by the braithwaites and executed, the npc's that talked about his death most likely heard it from drunk raiders/braithwaites in the gray's saloon.
another thing to mention, is that jasper say's that sammy's ghost is appearing more often, what happens in the story? arthur and the gang kill all the braithwaites, to save a boy (jack) all whilst jasper starts to see the ghost of his boy, sammy around the same time

Over the last days I’ve spinned out following theory: When Sammy was a child he and his father Jasper used to go fishing somewhere at the „Fishing Spot“, Kamassa River. Why there? Cause the fact it’s called Fishing Spot on the map indicates that this is a place commonly known by the Lemoyne people simply as a good place to go fishing. Furthermore the both houses in the background of Sammy’s drawing are fitting pretty well with the meanwhile decayed Saloon and Barn at Macomb’s End (even though there are a lot more trees around there unlike at the drawing). But in my opinion these houses are matching best with those drawn. And since the mission „American Distillation“ we additionally know that this entire area is lying within the radius of action of the Rhodians, especially of those ones pursuing a sideline career. But more on the last aspect in a moment… Right now let‘s just assume that’s the place we’re looking for.
Given the information that teenaged Sammy was pushed into a river by the recoil of the rifle he shot it’s reasonable to assume the place where it happened is the same place where both he and his father used to be for fishing all the years before (especially since we don’t have any other hints regarding the place of the incident, as far as I see). Also the nearby position of the camper who told us about that mystery could be taken as a hint given by Rockstar.
But more than the map position of the camper, it is - not surprisingly - what he is saying which also points to the Fishing Spot as the place where Sammy’s fate began to take its course. Like many other encounters in RDR2 his wordings and phrases can be seen ambiguously and understood in different ways, too.
So, almost at the end of our conversation when he’s talking about his mother leaving him as a child he says that he’s convinced her mother carried [the shame/guilt of her doing] around. And he adds „Just like them people of Rhodes.“ Obviously at a first glance that refers to the shame/guilt he‘s telling us the people of Rhodes carrying around. But that phrase could also be comprehend as a reference to that mission I‘ve already mentioned above. Beside the reported guilt Rhode people are very known to us for carrying moonshine in rough amounts or in other words: carriages packed with moonshine. Could it be that the guilt lies in the moonshine? And is the place where Sammy’s ending and Rhodes‘ guilt began maybe the same place where the moonshine begins his way? A way which started in the fog of Bayou Nwa and ended in a mood of sadness and shame which „you could feel … like a mist in the air“?
According to my interpretation, a possible explanation arises for what happened to Sammy: After falling into the water somewhere at the fishing spot, perhaps just a little way up the Kamassa River, he was swept along by the current, but fortunately managed to save himself to a riverbank where he observed some Rhodian moonshiner who had just been startled by a gunshot as they were preparing their carriage, and were now nervously scanning their surroundings for possible policemen. Of course, Sammy was immediately spotted by them. Unfortunately. The moonshiner, who may have even helped him out of the water, now faced the risk of being reported to the sheriff, a member of the Gray's, who are known to have good reason to hunt the moonshiner. So Sammy had to follow the same path as all the other witnesses to the crime in the game. Who could know better than Arthur and John? "Well, it's not the first time," said a guy in one of the audios Strangeman gave us in the video.
Since a lot of the people in Rhodes were involved in or benefited from or just knew about the whole moonshining thing and even about the murderer of Sammy it’s fair to say that „the whole place has the blood on their hands“. Like the moonshine in their heads. End.
So far my theory. Unfortunately it can neither explain the wrong first letter on Sammy's drawing nor the issue that Sammy’s father on that drawing looks more like the Strange Man than like Jasper (who has a Goatee on all photos over the time).

Maybe if Sammy was known to be a troublemaker (as apparently he has stolen candy multiple times), perhaps that's why the town suspected him of a crime and lynched him, and later figured out that it wasn't him after all. And the gunsmith made up the river story in order to cope with the loss (and may not even be aware that the river story is a fabrication as a way for his brain to protect itself from the trauma).

I'm wondering how young Sammy was when he died (see 4:56--in that photo, at least, he looks like a teenager). If he was older, that might have something to do with R. Feeney (whoever that is) being the one who made the drawing.
Either that or Sammy was a REALLY bad artist lol.

Sammy is a different character than the one that the townsfolk are regretful over. There's a grave at the church.

The cave man being Sammy is only a theory. Likely not true neither, because it seems like he died a few years ago and the cave man is a grown adult.

    • @geraltrivia6148

Quality over quantity; he puts a lot of time and effort into his (admittedly niched) videos, rather than churning out a half-assed video every day. The less you post, the less likely you are to show up in random people's recommended list and gain new subscribers. The game's also been out for several years so he's scraping the bottom of the barrel for content, while his audience is losing interest and moving on to other games. With his editing skills and knack for storytelling, I hope he branches out rather than give up if he runs out of RDR and GTA vids.

He didn't die he is the feral man that lives among the wolves but people of Rhodes think he died but he didn't.
And the slave was an escapee who got shot while escaping from the side mission dude that asks you to help retrieve his gun, journal and other stuff from his house that is being taken by the government.

My guess is that the kid did fall in the river but managed to get on land soon after. If you look at the map you can see that the kamassa river is the only one to be close enough for the gunsmith to bring his son (realistically). If the kid fell in it, the current would have pushed him south, then east near caliga hall, then south again until the river meets the lannahechee. So he might have returned to land near caliga hall or the ruined factory/slaughterhouse near Saint Denis. Maybe he saw something he wasn't supposed to see, or a rescue team of townfolks killed him for some reason but never told the father. There also a possibility that the father and son were far upstream on the kamassa and the kid was killed by the lemoyne raiders in macomb's end (where they make moonshine in the story mission).
But all that doesn't tell us how the townfolks are responsible for the death of the kid, and why they did what they did.

Perhaps someone saw Sammy fall into the river but didn’t stop to help rescue him. Apparently not a lot of people knew how to swim back then so if Sammy was swept away and the person couldn’t reach him in time the townsfolk decided to not say that there was someone else who saw Sammy but didn’t bother to help. That could be the big reason why the townsfolk could be guilty. The bystander effect if you will.

I'd take a closer look at the piece of dialogue where a man says "the boy you got killed". Now this could mean two things:
      1. They straight up killed him via someone they hired. It makes a lot of sense that way, especially since it would be much easier for the townsfolk to gather and take the decision to hire someone rather than all of them killing him together. It's also due to the sentence itself ("got him killed") which could mean they ordered his killing.
      2. There was an unfortunate chain of events that got Sammy killed, the circumstances of which are somehow to blame on the townsfolk of Rhodes. To put it into perspective, if you were on the battlefield and you took your unit straight into a trap, people would say you "got them killed" because you were the one that's to blame for getting them there.

    • @CrowBandit
      @CrowBandit 2 роки тому

@@user-vt4hd8hb4v Or maybe that’s how they talked at the time (at least someone uneducated) and he meant “the boy found killed in Rhodes” or something along these lines but I don’t think “you” means a person in that sentence.

I always thought the wild man was Jasper's lost son. If you read the wild man's diary, he mentions how his dad got him a gun but he isn't fond of hunting, and he somehow survived his accident.
But after seeing this video, I'm a lot less sure now.

Might be a type of survivors guilt, as that guy in the basement wasn't exactly quiet about his situation it's likely the people of Rhodes felt bad Jasper's son died and felt even worse for letting him spiral that it's not only eating at them, they also just let him kidnap and keep someone. Because there's no way he has enough money to pay off Sheriff Gray
