Thank goodness you didn't mention poor Stella Liebeck. A lot of people put her in list like this, but with just a little research you can easily find out that it wasn't unjustified and she only sued after they refused to turn down the heat on their coffee machines and pay her medical bills. She had 3rd degree burns and had to have skin grafts.
I wouldn't call it a "ridiculous" lawsuit, but the notion that Mcdonalds was serviing it's coffee "too hot" is false. They serve it at the same temperature today as they did back then.
Actually they currently serve their coffee at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, at the time of the Stella Liebeck suit they served it at 190. They were aware of the burn risk and had settled out of court over 700 time before deciding to take a stand with a little old lady.
Well imagine someone crashed their car and airbags broke their neck and killed them. And this happened over and over again, then airbag manufacturers should be further regulated which usually only happens through the attention tort cases bring up. This coffee caused such horrible burns to this woman that she requires multiple skin grafts and a long hospitalization. Watch the documentary "Hot Coffee", it breaks down what really happened with this case and how it was one of hundreds where people got similarly hurt.
It's not that the coffee was hot. Coffee is hot. It's that the coffee was too hot for the plastic cups, warping them slightly, so the lid didn't fit correctly causing the coffee to spill completely when the cup is tipped; instead of just dribbling out of the small hole.
I'm disappointed you didn't include the guy who sued Guniess World Records for listing him as the world record holder for most frivilous lawsuits filed. The lawsuit was dismissed, but one must feel it was his obligation to file it in the first place.
+TheRonster9319 I'm on board as well. This show is too good, it causes me to miss work and lose wages because I have to watch every episode the moment it comes out.
Can I sue my school for not being to find a job? I've been unable to get a job for 2 years after graduation, that's more than 3 months, that's enough time to sue right?
I'm suing the Green brothers for plagiarism. I'm older than they are; therefore, I've been using the words "a", "an", and "the" before they were born. However, they consistently use those words of mine without compensating me. John has gone so far as to write entire teenage novels, worth millions of dollars, which use those very words. Here come the lawyers.
So about the A and A+ law suit, it sound ridiculous, but if he was only suing to have it changed and not for money then I can see the justification. I might make such a big deal about it, but if your school recognize A+, and counts them more towards your GPA, then it's safe to assume that the school probably fosters a very competitive atmosphere. If they are going to screw up his ranking because of a weird policy, I could see how he would think that it was the end of the world. I'm only saying this because I used to TA physics for pre med, and they will fight you for every single point because they feel if they only get an A-, their chances to get into medical school is over. I'm not saying that healthy or reasonable, it's just the environment we've created.
google it guys. warner music claimed copyright for quite a few decades (and a few films actually paid the royalties) but the copyright claim was overturned recently by a judge.
Thanks Gregory Samuel Teo, that's what I was getting at. Warner will hopefully have to pay back the millions they have wrongfully claimed for the past half a century for a song they had nothing to do with.
I have met kids that say "If u don't make me this my dad works for Microsoft and he's gonna shut down all your stuff!". I am well known in the area, even by the big M
I heard about a woman, just recently, who attempted to sue Netflix because her daughter had gotten pregnant after going to her boyfriend's for "Netflix and chill". really?! Really, people????!!
Correction on No.22 -- the RIAA sued for illegal uploads, not downloads. Downloading isn't illegal in the US; it's the uploading (sharing out, not receiving) that's illegal. Look up any of the RIAA suits and you will find that although downloading may tacked on as a charge or brought up during the proceedings (if it even goes that far) only the uploading aspect is punishable. Popular media seems to use "downloads" as a catch-all for both downloads and uploads combined, when they're actually two very distinct matters.. distinct enough to be sued over if you have uploaded, and not sued if you haven't uploaded. None of the cases brought forward by the RIAA involved anyone who exclusively downloaded; they only sued people who uploaded.
Can you apply the knowledge of this video to your life? If you so, then you've truly learn something useful. I'm of course ignoring CrashCourse as those are actually meant to teach people, while these are trivial trivia.
emilio garcia I am. Now I don't mean to offen your sensibilities, but saying you've 'learn' something means nothing if it doesn't really apply to one's life which is what a school is meant to do. I do understand that today's schooling has lead to under performing students which does need to change which is the reason I'm glad that CrashCourse exists!
John, your books are too similar to my life. They all have real people, dynamic characters, and strong families. I am suing you for 1tretrigintillion dollars.
I am not going to sue you because you rightly did not include Stella Liebeck's suit against McDonald's. most people call her lawsuit frivolous but the company knowingly made it policy to serve coffee at temperatures exceeding safety recommendations and that negligence caused Ms. Liebeck to sustain 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
My dad is a personal injury lawyer and many years ago, he decided to film a commercial. Other than the commercial being ridiculous (my brother got made fun of in school for it), it attracted some strange clients. One man crashed his car in to a tree one night, totaling his car, so naturally he wanted to sue the tree. Another man got his junk stuck in the zipper of his pants and demanded to sue the zipper company. Needless to say, my dad never wanted to do another TV commercial again.
It's suits like this that make me wish there was a common sense clause to the judicial system where if the claim is too stupid or is obviously an abuse of the system, it shouldn't even be considered.
I served on a jury for a case where a woman fell while getting out of a valet service van and she sued them for 5 million even though she did not ask for help getting out. It took us like 10 mins to side with the defendant
I remember reading a Motor Trend magazine about a women suing Honda Motor Company because her 1988 Accord did not have airbags and she was hurt in an accident. The article said she settled out of court but I always thought, "Shouldn't you know whether the car you are buying has airbags or not. Especially an old 80s model car?"
You would think so but people sign contracts without reading them so it is entirely possible that someone buys a car without knowing what features it has or doesn't have.
This begs the question, who approved Diacetal for human consumption when there were "problems" at the factory already. When is the testing for ppb of Glyphosate in corn start?
"Popcorn Lung" sounds terrifying if you assume that you're growing popcorn shaped lumps inside your lungs. It sounds much less serious as a disease you get from eating too much popcorn.
I remember some family a while back went on one of those roller coasters that goes through a pool of water it had no water and sued the park for injuries
what is up with the Limbaugh comment? I'm no fan, but calling someone a racist without posting evidence has no place on this great channel. Still I love your channel and will continue to support it.
Another ridiculous lawsuit involved a couple who lost their daughter in the Aurora Theater shooting who with the help of the Brady Campaign, a gun control advocacy group, tried to sue the company that sold the shooter his ammunition. Since the shooter didn't break any laws buying the ammo, the ammo company didn't beak any laws, and the fact that because of lawsuit like this a law exists to prevent these kinds of lawsuits (the Protection of Lawful Commerce and Arms Act), they lost and were told to pay $200,000 in legal fees to the company they sued. They were apparently egged on into doing this by the Brady Campaign who knew full well that they would lose and wanted an excuse to further blame the gun lobby for their troubles. I am sorry that the family lost someone they cared about in a terrible way, but they filed this lawsuit while the man who committed the crime was being tried down the hall of the same courthouse.
That really is some stupid stuff, don't blame the guy who shot up a place, blame the company that sold him the ammo, that's like suing home depot after someone you know is killed with a hammer.
I mean, child custody can't be considered a property right either. You can't, for example, sell your kids. It's better to think of child custody as a combination of the ability to make parental decisions and the responsibility to care and provide for the child. "Getting the kids" in a divorce proceeding is quite different from "getting" physical objects, like a boat or a house or a salad spinner or a lawnmower... even though we talk about it as if it were the same.
Why aren't frivolous lawsuits dismissed and the petitioner fined for wasting the court's time. Seriously who sues over a grade, the movie Drive "being misleading" and 80 cents.
+Guy Shepard Frivolous lawsuits are usually quickly dismissed, and in some jurisdictions plaintiffs can indeed be fined for filing them. And if the plaintiff is represented by a lawyer, the lawyer can face fines or other sanctions as well.
slut4berniesanders well that's good to hear, from what I understand these type of lawsuits are a lot different for individuals such as prisoners who have had some success with frivolous lawsuits. Now those cases tend to be annoying.
The American legal system is severely out of whack. The huge sums in lawsuits is largely to blame for this ridiculous situation. While you can understand the reasoning, making sure legitimate lawsuits are actually felt by corporations, but it has created a culture where people try to sue for everything in the attempt to make a quick and easy buck.
The first item talked about the store "Century 21." Did he mean Forever 21? Century 21 is the name of a well-known real estate brokerage. Unless there is a Century 21 store in another region of the country.
"That is significantly more money than exists in the world" is a dramatic understatement. The amount of money that exists is tricky to calculate, but it's probably less than $100 trillion, or $10^14. $1 Undecillion is $10^36!
Forgot the one were a guy sued Red Bull because It didn't give him wings... He actually won millions... and that's why redbull commercials no longer say they give you wings.
Have you seen the games at Chuck E. Cheese? Kids pour coin after coin into them, hoping to win enough tickets for the X-Box behind the counter, but end up going home with a pack of gum and a set of plastic vampire teeth. I think that woman had a point.
@2:45 - children aren't "marital assets" but custody and guardianship *are*. And this is an "asset" (I really don't like calling it that, but ...) that, in most states, women have a priority for - which needs to be changed. If the father is financially capable of ensuring the children are taken care of then why should they be forced to pay the mother essentially for babysitting when they could just as easily hire a professional caretaker ... probably for less money and with professional training! And wouldn;t mean the mother couldn't also be granted shared custody and/or visitation rights ... Just a personal pet peeve of mine.
Though that case is often listed as being ridiculous, it was actually a valid case as it was proven that McDonald's was superheating their coffee above policy and procedures. The woman only sued because she had asked McDonald's to help cover her medical costs due to the severe burns she received and they refused.
What? That's a load of crap. They didn't "superheat" their coffee (lol), and in fact, MANY other businesses that serve coffee were shown to serve their coffee at a holding temperature that was at least as hot as Mcdonalds, and some were even hotter. Don't spread misinformation. What happened to that lady was unfortunate, but it was her fault. She put the coffee BETWEEN HER KNEES and pulled the lid off from back to front (to add creamer), and in the process spilled the entire cup into her lap. It was her screwup, but of course the jury had some sympathy for the lady and awarded her money. Incidentally, Mcdonalds serves their coffee at the EXACT SAME TEMPERATURE today as it did back then.
He didn't even mention the funniest part of the subway case. They defended the sandwiches being smaller by saying footlong was a brand name associated with subway and not meant as an actual denotation of measurement.
Glad you guys didn't bring of the hot coffee suit if you actually examine the case you can see the woman in that had a very strong point in her favor, yet people constantly use her as an argument in favor of restriction on legal suits.
I used to work at a foreclosure law firm and this lady sued the firm for $8 billion dollars, citing that we didn't meet the criteria for an outdated law. she hadn't paid her mortgage for over a year and hadn't even attempted to work anything out with the mortgage company, despite all the notices and opportunities sent to her. in the same lawsuit, she also said that we needed to contact her to negotiate a settlement "over a cup of tea" but could only do it on certain days and we needed to call her ahead of time so she could take her son to a hockey game. When we declined, she changed it to $80 billion. It got thrown out immediately and apparently the judge scolded her for wasting his time. my parents lost their house and it sucks, but don't be a dick about it.
I'm suing you guys for thanking me for not suing you. I never said that I wouldn't so your thanking me for not suing you is you trying to infringe on my rights as a person. I'll see you in court!
Thought I'd sue him because I forgot to be awesome (which caused undue stress, lost wages, and physical harm that amounted to $10*10^100) but the disclaimer at the end assured that I had no case

This was the best show ever!
Wait. When did John start to go grey?
Mental Floss: You're welcome! I've never been tempted to sue you! (translation: your puns have yet to become actionable!)
I empathize with the woman who was forced to listen to Rush Limbaugh. That is a punishment that should only be reserved for the worst offenders!
Do you perhaps mean Forever 21? Century 21 is a real estate company.
What have we learned today?... 'People be crazy.'
no mention of the McDonalds hot coffee case?
Though that case is often listed as being ridiculous, it was actually a valid case as it was proven that McDonald's was superheating their coffee above policy and procedures. The woman only sued because she had asked McDonald's to help cover her medical costs due to the severe burns she received and they refused.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that.
What is that ball in the background with a red face? it seems familiar...
can i sue my school for not providing good education?
don't sue me for defamation John but you may be going grey
The toys on the shelves should sue to get more screen time in this episode.
He didn't even mention the funniest part of the subway case. They defended the sandwiches being smaller by saying footlong was a brand name associated with subway and not meant as an actual denotation of measurement.
This is why there are so many lawyers.
Now remember, just because you can file the suit, doesn't mean it has any merit.
