I was there!! Thanksgiving 1961 After the parade, which came south, down Howard Street, towards Lexington, towards Saratoga... my mother took me to a new pizza place (on Howard street), where the guy was in the front window and twirled & twirled the dough high in the air. One bite = bliss.

I remember, when I was a young kid back then, we used to call the store "Polack Bum's". And we were Polish! Just a bunch of uppity Hutzler's shoppers, I guess! How I miss the old days of Highlandtown and Eastpoint (when it was just a shipping center).

I would never want to be back in the City of Baltimore MD in the 1960's Again! It was very Depressing then.

Just wanted to reach out again to check with you about using couple seconds of this video. I'm working on a video project about the restoration of the old Pollack building on Howard St. Would it be ok if I used a small portion of this video in that project?

Again wonderful! So nice compared to the ugliness of today! It wouldn't be long before our society would lose its mind! In ten years everyone would look like trash with filth and drugs everywhere!

I did a quick search to see if someone had posted it. Nothing turned up, but you might enjoy this page of Department Store history. Someone in the comments asks a similar question.

I thought Hutzler's did the Toytown Parade, since their toy annex on Saratoga Street was called Toytown.

Hi Kevin- This is WJZ-TV here in Baltimore. We saw your archival film footage of the Toytown Parade. We were wondering if we could use some of that footage in a project we are working on and if it's your footage. We could give you a credit during the credits portion of our project.

You are welcome to use the footage. This film belongs to me friend John Ruhl. It is one of his family's films from when he was a kid. He allowed me to put it on UA-cam. I asked him and said it was OK for you to use it. If you would like to text or call him please let me know.

No. It was Hochchild's. If you look at the banner at :10 you can see the name.

Wow, such fond memories is not what readily comes to mind when I think of Hothschild Kohn's. I think of the discriminatory practices of discouraging African Americans from patronizing such stores. I think of not being allowed to try on clothes or shoes because of the color of one's skin. I think of not being African American's not being allowed to try on shoes for sizing, but being told to draw an outline of their foot on a brown bag and hand it to a clerk for sizing. I think of liberal white women and the NAACP in Baltimore trying to get this store to change its Jim Crow policies but being rebuffed time after time after time. Such those pervade my mind about this allegedly "magical, better time" in Baltimore. Its true, African Americans, in general see a different America than white americans. Or maybe white americans simply choose to ignore this city and country's racist past and present.

"The large downtown stores only began accepting African-American customers in the spring of 1960. Before that, a myriad of rules held back black shoppers along the city's main retail street."--Baltimore Sun
You can remember that far back?!
You look GREAT for being 70+ years old!
