The VAG group should really start considering dropping the 2.5 5 pot in more cars. The RS3 is amazing don't get me wrong, but hearing the 5 pot howling in something like this would complete the menacing look it has.
Sure it more powerful, but an inherently unstable engine? I'm not sure about that decision. A VR6 would have been my first choice. But I realize carmaker have to comply with government regulations.

They were talking about putting the VR6 in it originally and when they decided against it they nearly put the RS3 5 cyl engine in it…but Audi wouldn’t let them! Big Mistake in my opinion-that would have been the perfect engine for this car!
@@JoeAchilles1 Formentor VZ5. IT is funny to me how VW's flagship can't have that 5cyl, but re-badged (and over-priced, let's be honest) Seat... i mean Cupra ... can.
The prefect engine would have been the VR6. Especially since there are already cars being released that makes its current engine, look less and less attractive. But regulations are regulation.
Hey Joe, thanks for recently doing more videos and expanding the automotive universe on this channel. I loved this video as much as the second Honda FL5 one. Good job mate! Although your videos are a little lengthy, I remained. engaged and committed to hear your insights! Take care all.
The new price is crazy but these are quite decent on the used car market. 43k in Germany while they’re easily 75k new… so in 3 years these will be fast performance bargains
I don't think the RS4 is a similar chassis, that engine is longitudinally mounted and transversely mounted in the Arteon, the Arteon is also really just a stretched out Golf, so there would have to be massive changes to the chassis to move to the RS4s, torsen based AWD system. As someone else said though, the RS3 2.5 5 pot would have been magic Excellent review as always.
Absolutely wonderful car, VW did a crazy good job designing this car. But 66k is just absurt. What the hell are these prices nowadays? That amount of money can get you much more
See for the same price at this car you can get an approved used 2022 Audi A8 60 TFSI with 462hp barely run in. Staggering cars like this Arteon even sell at all despite being a great car.
There's a reason you don't see many. It's because nobody in their right mind would pay £60k for a glorified 4 cylinder passat. These manufacturers are taking the piss with pricing!
Current TCR owner, ex-VW dealer employee. When VW released this, it was known from the outset at being overpriced. That’s why there are only 307 on the UK roads which may also explain poor residuals. The customer base for interest in that sort of car isn’t large enough. Having owned a b8.5 S4 avant, if I wanted a large quick estate now I’d buy a 19 plate Leon Cupra R ST ABT for a smidge under 30k. All the power you need, not many on the road but enough to retain solid residuals, cheap to run and similar build quality. Or if you wanted badge snobbery, a Golf R is the same but in a posher frock. :-) After that then I’d consider an M340i wagon.
You can actually pick up delivery mileage examples for sub £50k, also I think the biggest competitor for this car is the Golf R estate, which actually has a larger boot capacity.
I’d have this over anything on the market You don’t see them We got a cs mk8 over the R, same reason and just as fast if not more involving on the move
They’re on Autotrader at VW main dealers for only £45K now (6 months old and only 2000 miles). You’d probably be able to negotiate a bit more off too. So I think you’re numbers are likely to be pretty close.
Looks really nice especially the quad AMG-like tips but really needs more displacement and cylinders to justify that price. Its big yes but a Tiguan R with pretty much the same engine starts from £45k.
There is another option from Skoda which is about identical in size, and in my opinion, looks even better that the Arteon.. The Superb. In Romania, the 280hp model starts from 46k Euro :O And it comes witj 4x4 and the whole lot. I know where my money woul go - G20 330i rwd 🤣
the fourth generation ea888 in the Octavia RS has a smaller turbocharger and the internals aren't forged like they are on the R motors. the R engine also has an oil catch can system attached to PCV system to prevent carbon buildup. so yes, same engine code. but different engine.
Very balanced review as always. Personally, i dont even think it looks great but it's practicality perhaps makes up for that. That being said 66k is way too much. Id have a golf r estate and forgo the extra space!
Nice, but my low mileage B9 S4Avant with a DMS remap offers RS4 numbers and was nearly 30 grand less!! (and I regularly get 37mpg or better on motorway runs)
Joe sums it’s up perfectly insane money for this car.. If we went back 30 years these cars and more would never sell Clever marketing for lease deals is what’s caused these stupid prices Personally I buy 18 month cars cash and find I’m loosing a great deal
The price is rather high, but it’s a nice car. A colleague of mine just received hers in hybrid trim. In my country you can only get them funny equipped and the hybrid goes for €62000. Since it is a company car it needs to be hybrid and I didn’t like the 1.4. So in the end I went for the V60 T6 which is a bit more powerful (and expensive).
Couldn’t resist a peek into the classified. There’s a ‘23 plate, 2,500 mile R demonstrator for sale at £46k which was reduced to £44k by the time you reach the bottom of the Ad. Bumped into a guy who proudly showed me his, in blue, and he conceded that the MpG was horrendous if he pushed on.
The MPG is not very good even if you drive in normal mode (which is called sport in settings) but comes up as D1-7 in the dash settings, yet if you choose actual sport by pulling the gear lever back it shows S1-7 on the dash, then it u select Race it still shows S1-7. The only way I find to get Decent MPG is to put the car in Eco mode but then it's so laggy if you need to get going at times, like for example at a roundabout and there is a gap to go it's so sluggish or if you want to overtake on the motorway. Example a 17 mile trip down the motorway to work @ 70mph in Eco mode will return 34/35mpg In Normal mode that will be around 28-30mpg.
I look forward to your vids more than any of _your peers_ you know, the usual suspects. I'm so incredibly glad I didn't buy an Arteon R. My golf r was too good to be replaced by that car. _Then came the m240i_ . Joe is very much a part of my purchase choice.
There is the GTI, but that's a totally different car. One if for a growing family. The other, for a grown up (where the larger near-adult kids are still in the house) one.
I had one of these (206-TSI R line because the R isn’t in Aus!) it was a nice car and it got a lot of compliments. The room is crazy! None of our SUV’s have come close in terms of rear leg space. I miss it sometimes, but then I remember all the things I didn’t like about it. 😫
@@MotoGraham Just some of the features that they took out from the old model to the new. We had the original Liftback and then upgraded to the wagon. They removed the traction control button, meaning using launch control was now a pain in the ass, they removed the auto dimming mirror on the passenger side, the digital dash got worse! The quality, the lag was way more noticeable from old gen to new, the bonnet struts were gone and replaced with an old fashioned stick, the steering controls were changed to touch sensitive, the adaptive cruise control was a freaking nightmare on the highway because it’s set up for Europe and brakes when you try and overtake in any lane but the far right, the road noise was worse (although this could have been because we went from liftback to wagon), the rear windows no longer used double glazed windows. Just a lot of little things that added up to big things when you counted them all.
@@asum307 thanks that's really great to know! My Superb seems to have most of those features now so I'm a bit reluctant to "upgrade" to the Arteon. I do like the performance figures but so much of the inside of the Arteon is the same as my Superb. Most noticeably on a day-to-day is the same infotainment system!!
Kicking the arse off 70k is bonkers - I appreciate it's got the options you mention but I wonder what people are able to get them for? I think many would opt for a Merc shooting brake and lose some performance.
Not really. There are many people who just wants the sporty look but don't need a big engine for daily drive. Nobody needs a big engine and tbh even 150 - 190hp are enough for a car like that to feel fast enough
A Passat B8 R-Line 2.0 TSI 270 estate can be had with the same mechanicals including 4-Motion for a lot less money, has more practicality with the variable boot floor and has the same performance. The Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 270 estate also has the same mechanicals with 4-Motion, offers similar performance, much more space, more practicality and is significantly better value for money.
Needs a 2.5 or 3L engine to really be worth it in all honesty as like you said in the video, if you have a full car with luggage it will feel a bit slow
Nearly a £30k discount for a 1yr old car. My Lord. That’s what you’d get then take it to Revo and make even faster still! Lovely, but it’s still (as you say), a golf-level interior - it’s not an Audi/BMW standard. I had no idea it was so much more cavernous than my 5 series!!
Capacitive buttons - just absurb to have on a steering wheel, IMO, or even in general on an automobile. Yeah our roads are shocking for sure, and cars these days, for me, seem poorly suited - either too stiff or too soft (actually underdampened). Over-stiff for "sporty" feel but for comfort cars they often go too soft and have weak dampers so on rebound from the major undulations our roads have the car end's up bouncing lessening control as well lending to too much body sway. For me i think supple springs with strong dampers would be my ideal. Older cars [from Patrick's favourite era] never seemed so bad, i can only assume that the higher weight & size of modern cars coupled with large heavy wheels and low profile tyres are just unsuitable for UK's roads (of course the roads have deteriorated too!). As for the Arteon, looks good, love the wheels & colour, way overpriced though. Run-flat tyres would contribute a lot to the road noise! Thanks for the review, Joe!
60 grand! Thats used E53/E63 estate money and i know which i would buy. It also doesnt do the practicality as well as a Passat estate or indeed an E class. Ive got a 16 year old Passat estate and it has a 650 litre boot and 1650 litres with the seats down so im not sure why boot capacity seems to have got smaller over the years. The deal breaker for me even on the normal Arteon shooting brake is the lip between the boot and the back of the rear seats when theyre down. The Passat and S213 E class has a fully flat floor so does things even better.
still waiting to touch those buttons while driving mk8 golf R after 9 months of usage, yall reviewers have been sayingh this for 2 years now - crazy how that opinion still exists
To all the people commenting about the price. I don't think the manufacturers want you to buy products like these. UK Goverment have told them they need to sell a higher proportion of electric cars every year. If you really want a combustion engine car (which they are phasing out and probably don't want to support parts wise for 20years), they will bend you over sideways price wise to make is lucrative for them. No electric car of a similar size and luxury from VW will cost £60k+. I will not compare VW quality to China brands but VW group cars are costing double in many cases. The price gouging UK is something else but we are a nation of credit lovers and brands so I am not surprised at the price😂
I wish we could get these wagons in the states 😢. Instead we get big suv that drink gas like water on a hot day 😂. I know because I have a X5M, gulp gulp…..
This is a repackaged Skoda Superb 4X4 sport line a low mileage example can be had for £28K I actually think this is slightly overstyled. It's trying to hard to look cool.
It looks nice, probably nice to drive, but for that price, you can get a GOLF R and 20k left over for your portfolio. Or better yet, a Merc GLB AMG 35 will do.
If you can live with a lesser badge and less sleek looks, a Skoda Superb tsi awd has mostly the same mechanicals and even more practicality for a lot less money. Its a detuned engine but can be remapped back up to similar or more output for a few hundred quid
It also has the older infotainment and physical climate control etc so it's actually a better interior in alot of ways and definitely better fir taller folks too
They just pulled the Arteon and Passat as an offering in Australia. A real shame and the Arteon is getting doiscontnued globally so get the order in now if you want one.
The only thing, apart from the price, I don't like about the car are the rims, they seem too big and empty with those brake discs. I wonder how it'd look like with some thicker set of tyres
Far too much money for ‘the people’s car’ the badge means it will depreciate as quick as quick as Liz truss as PM. Shame because it looks super cool. ❤
One thing that bmw still hasn't figured out, even after making cars for 70 years, is selecting materials that don't fall apart after sitting in the sun for a lot of the life of the car. Often I've noticed when shopping used bmw cars is many of the rubber and other soft trim pieces are falling to pieces. Both on the exterior and upper door card sections. To me , that is crap. Older vw or mercedes, you look them over and they don't look like crap .

@@br164 I live here......citations needed lol
They were talking about putting the VR6 in it originally and when they decided against it they nearly put the RS3 5 cyl engine in it…but Audi wouldn’t let them!
Big Mistake in my opinion-that would have been the perfect engine for this car!
Hilarious when you think they won't let VW use it but they will give it to cupra 😂😂
Ahh I didn't know that!
Thanks buddy great to hear!
As someone else said though, the RS3 2.5 5 pot would have been magic
Excellent review as always.
Ahh yes very good point! Thank you 👌
No it not, the chassis is designed to be modular.
@@krane15 the MQB chassis is exclusively transverse in design, it can't accommodate a longitudinally mounted engine.
Prices now are mental. I have just watched Tim talking about his latest Ferrari at £278,000 with £73,073 in (must have) options
Yep and it's only getting worse...
My 4 bed detached wasn't much more. Genuinely 😳
Best review of this car I've seen so far on yt!
60k for a 2L car is crazy
Just think of the Mercedes SL43!

Imagine doing an rs3 engine swap with this Arteon shooting brake. Dream car material
Absolutely wonderful car, VW did a crazy good job designing this car. But 66k is just absurt. What the hell are these prices nowadays? That amount of money can get you much more
I loved this when it launched a couple of years ago - it’s basically a take down Panamera Sport Turismo
Good analogy
Yes very similar silhouette, but far more practical thankfully, the Panamera is very tight for rear passengers.
I have to keep reminding myself you're a big chap because you really make the car look small whilst explaining how big it is :')
Lovely motor and at 37k for a 22 plate it's good value on the used market
See for the same price at this car you can get an approved used 2022 Audi A8 60 TFSI with 462hp barely run in. Staggering cars like this Arteon even sell at all despite being a great car.
There's a reason you don't see many. It's because nobody in their right mind would pay £60k for a glorified 4 cylinder passat. These manufacturers are taking the piss with pricing!
You took the words right out of my mouth!
After that then I’d consider an M340i wagon.
You can actually pick up delivery mileage examples for sub £50k, also I think the biggest competitor for this car is the Golf R estate, which actually has a larger boot capacity.
About the power "issue" - this engine is known to produce about 420-500 hp when tuned up to Stage 1 and Stage 2.
…..it is a stand alone product. Kinda expensive? Maybe yes, BUT it’s different. Being different and big and fast, costs!
Freaking great VW.
I’d have this over anything on the market
You don’t see them
We got a cs mk8 over the R, same reason and just as fast if not more involving on the move
Great review. Thanks for sharing 👍
Even in this market, this car will depreciate massively. I’m thinking 8000 miles, 1 year old, £38k.
They’re on Autotrader at VW main dealers for only £45K now (6 months old and only 2000 miles). You’d probably be able to negotiate a bit more off too. So I think you’re numbers are likely to be pretty close.
Great video Joe. Have you driven the Tiguan R yet? I've been looking at them for a while and looking at picking one up next year.
Looks really nice especially the quad AMG-like tips but really needs more displacement and cylinders to justify that price. Its big yes but a Tiguan R with pretty much the same engine starts from £45k.
It needs authentic Brembo brakes. Especially when Honda and Hyundai/Kia offer them on their N/R cars.
There is a 21 plate for sale in the same spec with 24000 miles for 35k..... Still under warranty from VW.....makes sense at that price
I've miss read the title but I think Shopping break sounds appropriate.
There is another option from Skoda which is about identical in size, and in my opinion, looks even better that the Arteon.. The Superb. In Romania, the 280hp model starts from 46k Euro :O And it comes witj 4x4 and the whole lot. I know where my money woul go - G20 330i rwd 🤣
the fourth generation ea888 in the Octavia RS has a smaller turbocharger and the internals aren't forged like they are on the R motors. the R engine also has an oil catch can system attached to PCV system to prevent carbon buildup. so yes, same engine code. but different engine.
as you say a great second hand option, 2 years old with
One of the best looking estate's on the road . I thought that colour was called kingfisher blue
I would love to have these come to the USA , love wagons
The steering wheel at 7:31 looks happy to be on camera 😂
Best car VW has made beside the GTI/Golf R and Euro Passat
That car is dope. Have a VW they are great but get a good looking one like this.
Apple vs oranges. Why is it so hard to get this right?
Joe sums it’s up perfectly insane money for this car..
If we went back 30 years these cars and more would never sell
Clever marketing for lease deals is what’s caused these stupid prices
Personally I buy 18 month cars cash and find I’m loosing a great deal
Example a 17 mile trip down the motorway to work @ 70mph in Eco mode will return 34/35mpg
In Normal mode that will be around 28-30mpg.
I look forward to your vids more than any of _your peers_ you know, the usual suspects.
I'm so incredibly glad I didn't buy an Arteon R. My golf r was too good to be replaced by that car.
_Then came the m240i_ . Joe is very much a part of my purchase choice.
Great to hear thank you!
Did you sell the golf r for the m240i?
@@bobbybooshay5854 Yes

Brilliantly objective video Joe!
Totally agree on it not making any sense new… Even more so in France with huge CO2 tax on new cars. Cheers, Tom
about the price.. dont know about the UK but in Germany cars above a Golf are over 80/90 company leases without vat . Thats why they sell so many
maybe a golf R estate would be more realistic? as a B8 Passat owner i'd love a drive..
There is the GTI, but that's a totally different car. One if for a growing family. The other, for a grown up (where the larger near-adult kids are still in the house) one.
Definitely has striking looks. The problem is that the price is Audi/BMW/Mercedes territory.
I had one of these (206-TSI R line because the R isn’t in Aus!) it was a nice car and it got a lot of compliments. The room is crazy! None of our SUV’s have come close in terms of rear leg space. I miss it sometimes, but then I remember all the things I didn’t like about it. 😫
what didn't you like about it? I have a Skoda Superb at the moment and this looks like a more rapid version of the Superb with better styling.
Man! Can't wait for this in the U.S.!
Kicking the arse off 70k is bonkers - I appreciate it's got the options you mention but I wonder what people are able to get them for? I think many would opt for a Merc shooting brake and lose some performance.
Think the car makes much more sense with the bigger engine.
Little stage 1 will have it zooming
Gives me Porsche Panamera vibes when looking at it from the side.
Every time I saw one of these on the road, I took a picture.🤣
Needs a 2.5 or 3L engine to really be worth it in all honesty as like you said in the video, if you have a full car with luggage it will feel a bit slow
Joe, how did u find the braking on this car. I'm not happy with the braking performance on mine.
Way over priced compared to what?
Love the vids Joe🔥 this looks like a beast😮
Thank you!
They are one of the nicest and most striking cars on the market outside of a supercar.
Great. Another “not expecting that!” a video on UA-cam.
Hi Joe, thanks for the video. Would you recommend this or the SEAT Leon Cupra estate 4x4 300 R ST? I remember your great video on that.
Ahh if you don't need the space, the SEAT is far better Dynamically 👌
Excellent, many thanks for that 👌👌👍much appreciated.
Again you talk a lot of sense Joe - great honest review
prices are out of hand everywhere, but damn it is really good looking and compelling, except for the price that is..
This is a repackaged Skoda Superb 4X4 sport line a low mileage example can be had for £28K
I actually think this is slightly overstyled. It's trying to hard to look cool.
It looks nice, probably nice to drive, but for that price, you can get a GOLF R and 20k left over for your portfolio. Or better yet, a Merc GLB AMG 35 will do.
for that $, BMW 3 series wagon all the way, enough practicality with superior driving dynamics and handling, and at least as good with fuel economy.
3:00 there is not rear aircon button? R version and there is not 3-zone aircon?
Fantastic review, as always, Joe. We don't get these Down Under. Nice car for the money.
What the hell you on fella? These are 100% on sale in Australia
Its weird how this engine is also available in the sedan but only in an R-line package and not a proper R badge
Always liked the VW Arteon!
The only thing, apart from the price, I don't like about the car are the rims, they seem too big and empty with those brake discs. I wonder how it'd look like with some thicker set of tyres
…and the dash indicated 22.1mpg average over c4000 miles. Prices are crazy. There’ll be some serious depreciation to endure on new cars sold recently.
Far too much money for ‘the people’s car’ the badge means it will depreciate as quick as quick as Liz truss as PM.
Shame because it looks super cool. ❤
It's quite incredible how a car which is so brilliant and looks so good sells so little...
Sedans and their derivative just don't sell that much anymore. Wagon don't sell at all in North America.
@@krane15 yes I know and it's quite incredible

That is one good looking car to be fair!!
It is a VW Panamera, with more space in the boot and more than 110k cheaper.
I wish we could get these in the US
Got an r line love it
One thing that bmw still hasn't figured out, even after making cars for 70 years, is selecting materials that don't fall apart after sitting in the sun for a lot of the life of the car. Often I've noticed when shopping used bmw cars is many of the rubber and other soft trim pieces are falling to pieces. Both on the exterior and upper door card sections. To me , that is crap. Older vw or mercedes, you look them over and they don't look like crap .
