Your videos are calming and knowledgeable. I appreciate what you guys do! I’ve just started caretaking at the family farm and want to introduce beekeeping. We’re in New Jersey, USA and I was just wondering; how do you know if they will have enough flowers to pollinate and keep them healthy?

      P.S.
What’s the best way to get in touch with local beekeepers?

Just dive in George, I started 6 months ago and was very nervous at first. Fully suited up to transfer my NUC and the first couple of inspections. Found the gloves to be almost impossible to wear while handling frames so I did away with them very quickly. For the next few inspections I was stung on the hands at least once each time. It does hurt, especially right on the finger tips. Very quickly you will find the bees do not attack you for no reason, they crawl over my hands and legs without stinging. I rarely get stung now. As Cedar says, you will get to know your bees and when they have had enough of you poking around. Bees are fascinating and you will find yourself just watching them come and go along with all of their antics. I just wear a bee jacket and hood with shorts and no gloves and look forward to every inspection. Go for it George, just go for it! You will soon wonder what you were ever worried about and wish you started earlier.

So is there a reason you don’t just have the super on from the start so the bees start storing honey in the super from the get go? What is the reason you have to wait until after the box is all filled out?

There is an its a really important factor. New bees need to concentrate on establish the brood box first, bees are given different jobs inside a hive and more space acts as a stress and can stretch the bees resources thin. As bees need to regulate the temperature inside the hive, extra unused space can create more humidity and require more fanning out of the hive. All of this adds up and can cause some major delays in bees building a strong population. Supering in some places can be quite a precise practice, with some seasons only having short nectar flow in which case any super is only added right when the bees are both strong and show signs of major foraging. In areas where the season is longer bees can work on this over time, it is not uncommon for a Flow Super to be filled in peak season in just a few weeks. -Kieran
