Jamie, The recent spike of food poisoning in townships rises serious questions on National security. One of the questions that never stop to knock is: Who is sending the bite in order to create confusion with immigrant communities? Looking at the market value of spazas, it's clear that someone wants to hijack that slice of the market.
Do these immigrants pay tax into the economy??? SARS said the 30% of unpaid tax into the system mainly comes from the informal sector with spaza shops being a high number of those not paying tax. Is big companies behind the unhygienic conditions in the spaza shops, are they giving them counterfeit food to put on their shelves, are the companies forcing them to sell expired food? Jamie likes promoting these foreigners who are no benefit to the economy, when children died not a whisper out of him, but he was quick to come and exonerate foreign owned shops weeks after.

The truth is that the sector is 50% owned by locals and 50% foreigner but they have created the impression that it is all foreigners so as to drive local hate so as to do their dirty work. People who have run the apartheid system are dangerous.
Hearing this makes me think no wonder small businesses are bound to fail, because of what Julius Malema called "White Monopoly Capitol" This White Monopoly is because of political connections. And Greed!
There should be a mandate to sell South African products from SMME's in all these spaza shops, and regulate the products cause the WMC alternative seems worse to me😢
Wholesaler is The 1st step. Which is exactly what Boxer is trying to be, it's succeeding, directly making it alternative wholesale supplier to Spaza industry. Players in the wholesale game is Big Save in Pta, which gives credit to spaza shops for stocks alreadt, Then Makro, Somalian Wholesalers then Boxer
Why are they not just coming to open and compete with the spazas. Why must they close spazas before coming? They want to close black businesses by making Africans fight for them.
A better solution would be a move that encourages our people to open spaza shops and run them correctly..... Something similar to FAMILY FAVORITE, LUCKY 7, etc. that we had before the Pakistanis took over

If this happens, one of our Black favoured billionaires will be given shares in one of these companies just, like our own president became extremely rich by obtaining shares in some of SA's biggest companies. So wealthy that he once bid R18m at auction to buy a buffalo. This happens in almost all countries that have ruling ex liberation movements.

These laws will be beneficial for the learnered individuals who is able to implement said by laws and is able to get lawyers to intervene in situations of unfair treatment.
I think so. Most other people will lose their business and not be able to navigate this. This Issue is more nuanced than that. A lot of South Africans I know personally want nothing to do with running a spaza shop. Which is why theres a lot of foreigners who own and run them. I have seen the same same issue with housing. A South African will get an RDP house and not live in it but rather rents it out to foreigners. Then they will live in a shack rather but be making income from the RDP house rent. The problem is us South Africans. We have known that foreigners own spaza shops. But clearly they are filling in a need because our people still buy from them. Why dont our own people start their own spaza shops. Its easy to point fingers but lets start by looking at us.
@@ishe_thanks for that update and observation. My take is that after all that has been said, it can be much better if we can come together as the victimized South Africans share ideas and come with appropriate solution as a united front.
Every business can repatriate profit the same way shoprite in other African countries is repatriating their profits back to SA also. They bring their money and stimulate the economy and create jobs
Another form of affirmative action at the current juncture is for Government to institute some kind of restriction or prohibition for corporate retailers to access the informal market, which is technically the only economy left for the Black child. Otherwise if you allow corporate retailers into that space then white monopoly capital will just own the South African economy outright and will perpetually use money as an instrument to influence policy and political direction. So the Black child will always be the bus driver (political power and proletariat), but the petrol station owner and navigation system owner will always be capital.
Great video as expected. Low-income households can only afford to buy one type of item at a time, and spaza shops service this need. The middle class who are more financially fortunate than low-income households but have their struggles in their own right have a bit more to spend and so prefer to buy in bulk which requires more capital upfront but is frugal in the long term, as the products bought in bulk are far cheaper than buying them individually, and retailers such as Shoprite service this need. This means we need both spaza shops and these retailers. Proximity has been the ace that spaza shops hold over big retail, however, recently big retail with their resourceful and competitive spirit have made been making moves that render that ace futile. These moves are the development of complexes closer to neighbourhoods and the introduction of delivery. This is a threat to spaza shops. They could try to introduce delivery using bicycles and whatsapp to compete, but something else needs to be done.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment. I think they are planning on doing cheap deliveries to make it work. I read in the annual report from ShopRite that they will fully acquire Pingo. The company that has been doing deliveries for them.
My observation is that these big 5 food retailers are controlling the cost of food, there is no competition, and low-income earners will no longer afford food. Hence bo my friend are selling cheap and unsafe alternatives. Grocery items prices are going up 20 % in a year and our salaries are not growing as much. I don't know who, but someone has to really look into the rising cost of food in south Africa and regulate it
Decentralise and support local entrepreneurs as much as possible. Centralizing forces, whether in politics or business, should be resisted with; innovation, better quality service, personalization and knowledge of customers, etc.
I've had the same frequency of thought on this challenge for the past seven 7 years and have developed a business model that could make a dent in addressing these issues.

I don’t agree with closing Spaza shops, I think they should be formalised though. I think it allows for safety to consumers as well as being able to have some accountability. When you formalise an industry you also create jobs and other industries which create jobs. There is a reason to have standards in place for the safety of everyone.
🗣️🎙️I tell what, there is a God ophilayo as scripture says. Ubab'uPanyaza Lesufi is not sleeping on his watch. He knows what is up, his parents were informal traders and that's how he got to school. Bayanya abathakathi, bayahlola ngomhawu.
That is a moot point. We all make our monthly groceries at the major corporate retailers. We access convenience stores or spaza shops for their convenience and proximity when we need supplementary supplies for our day-to-day household upkeep. I am certain that you didn't insinuate that we (kasi people) make our monthly groceries from them they make their monthly groceries at Spar. That would be a far reaching claim to assert. Yes, we are hurt by the loss of our children and we should be rightfully angry, but our pain should not cloud our judgement. We should look at the facts and diagnose the correct problem or else we will be acting like dogs chasing their own tail and make no meaningful progress in addressing the situation. The fact they the health department is coming up with different evidence in their autopsy and toxicology reports are an indication that there is a another invisible hand that is at play and it is directing our attention into a certain direction. The more broader question is whose hand is this and what does it stand to gain in the greater scheme of things?
Still to be corrected, the poison saga, xenophobia is the war of capitalist for profit share in township economy,is too big for foreign nationals to take away from the established supermarket.
In Canada they have what u call Dollar tree and Dollar stores. Every products sold for not more than $2 each. Here is how ShopRite or Pick and Pay or Black township or black Rural development business owners can do. Since u have the big shoprites and big pick and pay and others those products going to those shops are normal in sizes. But the products going to the Spazas can be designed to Carter for the poor u make the same product that goes to the pick and pay to the Spazas but the quantity differs but quality the same. U design the products needed the most in the Spazas to Carter for anyone that wants to spend less getting smaller quality. For example, a small size off rice package specifically designed to Carter for the poor to afford in the Spazas same as Millie meal packages. yet in the pick and pay u find the bigger packages. The dollar stores chips are not packed full in the packages as to the chips u will buy in the big shops Walmart's. U get pick and pay or ShopRite to bake bread and other donuts to be sold to the Spazas same bread and donuts u will find in the big ShopRites but lesser in size for the Spazas markets. The rich but in the big pick and pay and those that have money or got pay but must Carter for the poor as well. Choices made by customers not the wholesale dictating what customers needs to be selling high all the time. The Walmart's and Dollar tree and Dollarama exist in Canada and The US. This is to avoid bringing fake products from elsewhere but mostly products made locally. This idea can help bring about new wholesalers locally gotton to make design products that are locally made and smaller in quantity but the same product u find in the shoprites but quantity lesser sold at a low affordable price to the townships that can't afford to buy the big quantities from ShopRite. ShopRite isn't losing customers but also making money from the Spazas shops. U have to have many off those Spazas shops and production increased to meet up with the demand those Spaza shops build nicer and healthy as well as cleaner hiring two- three staff per store in all the townships and rural areas. U can empower a black business owner to take all the Spaza shops in the country but getting the wholesale that can prepare cheaper and lesser products than the normal sizes u get in the big stores. At times wholesalers can make lots off products to be split to go to the Spazas and to the shoprites different packaging but similar products to fight the China and fake products incoming. For noddles u make more noodles some go to the ShopRites and some go to the Shoprites but just a little less in the packages. Getting the soft drinks and water companies to produce many to be send to the Spazas and to ShopRite. It's the customers that needs to choose where to buy especially the poor the rich will always go to ShopRite and some off the poor when they have the big bucks.

let's not forget that informal spaza shops don't employ many more than two cashiers, managers, cleaners, loss control, etc and their rent is usually cheaper, their stock is not insured, they don't pay tax in most cases. South Africa must decide whether it wants to grow or not. The fact that the formal sector has been struggling is no secret. The reason this township economy is suddenly interesting to big business is that it is a sector that has been growing implying that SA’s anaemic GDP growth has been driven largely by such informal sectors. Now it will become part of the formal economy. Sad.

Thank You for the work You have put in to present a comprehensive understanding. I have watching very closely re Spaza Shops with the more recent push to "Register" these businesses!
Thanks for this info bro, now all this spaza food poisoning noises from the past weeks all makes sense.
Just exactly what I said.
Glad to help.
My brother, i stumbled across you by mistake but i am glued for ever to your channel.
Thank you for this Jamie. The WhatsApp group messages are saying that we shouldn’t buy from the Spaza shops. I will share this in the WhatsApp groups ngibaqwahise.
Are there WhatsApp group messages saying that?
We have a very serious leadership problem in SA
But unfortunately we focus all our energy on symptoms(illegal immigrants) rather than the cause(leaders)
Big facts. This is a problem in the whole of Africa in general.
@NgolaNalane True only if citizens could unite & hold corrupt leaders accountable trust me Africa would be the best & richest continent on earth.
I just subscribed to your channel, I’m guilty of watching and not subscribing. I love your analysis on these matters. They are eye opening, I wish a lot of South Africans can watch your channel and be well informed. You are doing a wonderful job I must say. 🙏

What conditions will these uSave stores be in? Shoprite / Boxer stores are filthy and present their own health risks. We could be happy about the job opportunities this will bring; however, these big companies pay their staff next to nothing. There is no winning here. The low-income household is continuously disrespected and disregarded.
That’s a good question. Will the workers get minimum wage or will they do franchise deals and the owner will have to take massive loans and work long hours without making a profit?
Brother thanks for this info it open our mind
The Spaza shop/township economy is moving from from being dominated by foreigners to WMC😂. As black South Africans we are truly going through a lot. Will my people ever actually own anything in this country?
Our people died in vain for this country, we are being pushed & shoved from all angles.
We will never get the economy back unless we also understand we need to start our own black only millionaire cult/mafia that specialises in buying business infrastructure building our own estates our own cities buy investment in the banking sector and everything just like they do😂😂
It's self inflicted, that's what makes it very stupid
let me give a little secret our problem is Government incompetent lack of Entrepreneural knowledge lack of understanding economic trends lack of knowledge as to startup business support and investment into start businesses its our Government they prefer to loot amongst themselves squander money with ho accountability
The truth is that the sector is 50% owned by locals and 50% foreigner but they have created the impression that it is all foreigners so as to drive local hate so as to do their dirty work. People who have run the apartheid system are dangerous.
Thank you sir.
Hearing this makes me think no wonder small businesses are bound to fail, because of what Julius Malema called "White Monopoly Capitol" This White Monopoly is because of political connections. And Greed!
Another issue with big retailers is that the majority of the products they sell are from companies that they have shares.
Exactly. They are extracting on both ends.
Yeah! That's why there's no Mofaya in most of these shops .... Many other brands also
There should be a mandate to sell South African products from SMME's in all these spaza shops, and regulate the products cause the WMC alternative seems worse to me😢
Thank you for diving into A2pay, very interesting insight that changes the way i see things

Looks interesting what’s about to be revealed here!!!
Enjoy the episode.
Is good news.We want shoprite and Pick n pay in our townships and villages. They will hire our people and pay taxes.

The harshest part is that while you are appealing your appeal is deemed unsuccessful and the cancellation of license will remain. This is contrary to the general legal system where an appeal suspends the judgement.

Yes. I agree with you. They pay no tax, no v.a.t. and their money gets sent 'home'. They may make it easier for locals to shop but they do not contribute to the S.A. economy.
Ey ngoba, not just home. They are funding wars back at home. Our government is helping them via SASSA grant since most SASSA beneficiaries swipe kubo omafreinds and they don't bank with SA banks but iya direct to their respective banks in their countries.
Thank you for the analysis...
Pleasure.
I think you are right. That’s what they need to do but this seems to be opening the door for ShopRite and Pick and Pay
I don't know who, but someone has to really look into the rising cost of food in south Africa and regulate it
Thanks Jamie. Truly, ignorance is NOT bliss!!! We're under siege in any way possible!!!!

I don’t agree with closing Spaza shops, I think they should be formalised though. I think it allows for safety to consumers as well as being able to have some accountability. When you formalise an industry you also create jobs and other industries which create jobs. There is a reason to have standards in place for the safety of everyone.
The government should help them to grow and not force them to close down and be unemployed

Thank you for this comprehensive and well thought out contribution.

Why don't the big Supermarkets open Spaza shops in the Townships, giving a chance to a local to run it? They could supply stock at their discount.

Sad.
Like reavaya take stats of SA spaza shop owners.
If one of this big shops comes in within 5km radius the spazas within should qualify for share holding and also the building owner must have some social responsibilities to the community.
