Ich bin erst 1959 in Berlin zur Welt gekommen, aber genauso erinnere ich mich.
Die Reste vom Krieg waren überall zu sehen, aber es gab eine positive Aufbruchstimmung.
Ich hatte eine sehr schöne Kindheit in West-Berlin und die kann mir keiner nehmen
I visited West Berlin in 1955 as a 10 year old - this archive is exactly as I remember. We also were able to visit the Soviet Garden of Remembrance in East Berlin. Eine ganz andere Zeit, eine ganz andere Platz. Danke sehr!

I spent 6 months in Berlin, 1983-84, studying German at the Guethe Institute in Knesebeck Strasse ... aber leider, habe ich die meisten meine deutch fergessen. What interesting times they were.

Trams are typically a thing of East-Berlin. West-Berlin invested in the U-Bahn and buses, East-Berlin more in trams and S-Bahn.

I heard this personally from a my family's friend in her 80's nowadays: her mother fled German to Brazil just before War. After War, she decided go back with her daughter (our friend, a teenager then), in the same time this footage was taken. And that was exactly what she described us. So, chocked with such destruction, she went back to Brazil again. Its amazing how all was reconstructed and what a great country It is again.
Berlin today is actually one of the poorest cities in Germany with one of highest percentages of the population on the dole. It's also dirty compared to other German cities. About half the people in Berlin are foreigners or of non-German origin.

@@krollpeter Of course. The West got Marshall plan money and an end to Russian reparations in 1946 and very favourable debt terms to other countries. The East got to pay war reparations for the East AND West Germany to the Russians up until 1953- billions of Deutsch Marks. And the Russians destroyed or looted everything they could from the GDR-whole factories dismantled and brought back to their country. It was never a level economic playing field from day one.

The Soviet memorial shown at the end was located in the British sector. Even during the height of the Cold War and throughout, right up to reunification in 1990 Soviet troops travelled into West Berlin each day to provide an honour guard to the memorial commemorating its dead. The British forces in the sector would also provide an honour guard to respect those Soviet soldiers who fought with them as allies.
It's the time that the Russians dismantled the monument and brought it back to Russia.

Yes I understand the reasons during the Island phase of West Berlin surrounded by RED territory. But after 1989, why good Germans do you maintain an elaborate Soviet memorial (with a Red Army tank no less) in your capital city. Stalin, by even Russian modern history was a mass murderer and the Red army conducted mass killings and rape of civilians. Time to give notice to Putin it is being respectfully dismantled, the tank offered back, and the memorial taken apart put on a train across Poland to Kaliningrad. Otherwise it will be melted down for scrap.

Schön den Flughafen Tempelhof zu sehen. Mein erster Flug fand von Tempelhof statt. Mit der Pan Amerika nach Hamburg mit meinen Fußball Verein und der Meister Mannschaft in der ich gespielt habe von 1970 von FSV Hansa o7 aus Kreuzberg SO 36.
Wir sind zu einem Fußball Turnier nach Hamburg Hacksheide geflogen als Belohnung für die Erinnerung der Meisterschaft mit der 1.D Jugend von Hansa 07 damals. Schöne Erinnerung. War schon was mit 12 oder 13 Jahren damals geflogen mit einen Düsenflugzeug von Berlin Tempelhof. Meine Eltern Baujahr 1923 sind erst mit fast siebzig Jahren das erste Mal in den Urlaub geflogen aber von Tegel aus. Bleibt alle schön Gesund Freunde der Sonne 🌅

Kleiner Hinweis zur Entstehungszeit der Aufnahmen: Es kann erst ab Mitte 1956 gewesen sein, da zu diesem Zeitpunkt die weißen Autokennzeichen eingeführt wurden (im Westen). Vorher gab es die schwarzen Besatzungszonenschilder.

Kindererinnerungen an meine Heimatstadt. Zum Glück hatten wir keinen Vergleich und lebten nur im Jetzt. Beim Bäcker gab es immer Küchenreste und Abschnitte, eine grosse Tüte voll für 10 Pfennig, davon wurden alle Freunde mit satt.

Berlinern war da nicht angesagt, und auch in der Schule verboten. Obwohl ich mich als Berliner Göre fühle, so hab ich inzwischen kein Heimweh mehr. Nur noch liebevolle Erinnerungen.

I visited 'both' Berlin's back in 1971. Still kind of depressing, but much improved and livelier. DW points out that it's really hot (in a good way) for the arts, nightlife, and business now and is cheaper than London or Paris for costs. Great!
Oh dear,..sorry it's too short for you. Crikey, this was filmed in 1954 so it's not like todays tech with a shit ton of Gigabytes to record on. This is probably all the person recording at the time had space for, maybe some off it didn't survive the passage of time, just like a lot of old movies that often need a shit ton of restoration.

I was stationed in Mannheim West Germany from 1985 until the wall fell and I left in Feb 1990. I visited vibrant West Berlin and the ambivalent and depressing East Berlin. The department stores had either brown shoes or black shoes of one design. No down comforters available, no binoculars, etc. I met some tourist women from Poland and we quickly took pictures together, then they left equally quickly. I hope all people can live in peace and prosper. Freude und Frieden.
There have been great binoculars from Carl Zeiss, also russian ones. My father still uses an old russian microscope. So you must have visited the wrong store.

Looking at the kaiser wilhelm church, it was before the city torn down some more of it to make way for the two memorial structures.
I don't understand why they needed to remove the original tower to replace it with the modern one in '63. I suppose the idea was to have a totally modern structure as a statement that Germany was moving forward from the past. I think if was necessary to rebuild the tower for structural reasons it should have been more in sympathy with the old one and wouldn't have looked so dated now. After all, the new church is "modern". Maybe cost was the main consideration. I think that as a memorial, the post-war addition of the new Coventry Cathedral to the old ruined one is far better architecturally.
@@SuperNevile it appeared the structures may have been in the way of their reconstruction efforts, and it may have also been viewed as an eyesore to the rest of the other remains of the church.

That was a scary time for East and West Germany. Even if I haven't lived through it, and live in The United States, I still feel that way.
City planning in Europe was much superior back then to what it is today.
I think one consequence of the war that isn't acknowledged as much is the shift in architecture. After extreme-bombings, a lot of Berlin (and Europe) was reconstructed with modern and post-modern styles. This shift seems to have been for the worst, as the beautiful artistic styles in construction are now far less prominent, and even in the 50's its evident here.

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was left standing as a burned memorial after the war. The Church is still standing unchanged today.

Jerzt auch Nichtmehr - hat das DDR Regime in den 60-80 ger Jahren begrissen und durch platten Bauten ersetzt . Im Westen jedoch wurden mit marschplan Rekonstruktionen durchgesetzt . Der Stadtschloss und die Berliner Altstadt haben die Sowjets auch noch abgerissen

Even by 1954 standards; the K'damm looked a hell of a lot more cosmopolitan than the GDR's Stalinallee, now named Kark-Marx-Allee.
@Werner Monoton I wasn't there, born in 1957 but, judging by old pics of that era W Berlin, it was starting to look again like a First World city around 1953-56. The restored Mercedes dealership on the K'Damm, the KaDeWe dep't store was partially restored and open for business, etc.
@Werner Monoton Please quit deflecting; I was referring to W Berlin vs E Berlin in 1954; NOT the USA since we suffered virtually NO war damage, within the confines of the 48 then states. Alaska and Hawaii didn't accede to statehood till around 1959.
Stalinallee's goal was not to look "cosmopolitan", you had regular working class people living there.

@Werner Monoton was soll ich mir da raussuchen? Keins der Dinge entspricht der Wahrheit. Ich bin einfach nur ein etwas älterer Herr, der sein ganzes Leben in Deutschland lebt und einfach nur etwas traurig ist, einfach weil dieses Land nicht mehr das ist wie es mal war.

Ein Jahr vorher am 17. Juni was es in der Stalinallee alles andere als „friedlich“. Ein enger Freund bekam als 16-jähriger in Leipzig an dem Tag eine Kugel in die Schulter ab. So gebrandmarkt verlor er seine Lehrstelle, stand unter Beobachtung und musste in den Westen fliehen. Sein großes Glück....

Wir hatten jedenfalls vom Nazisterror die Nase gestrichen voll. Generalfeldmarschal Friedrich Paulus lehnte ab als seine Tochter wollte, dass er sie besuche. Warum? Weil im Westen dieselbe Bande von Kriegstreibern und NAZIS, in neuen Gewand, wieder am Ruder waren.
@@theSnaredrumde Er war ja ein ganz junger Mensch und war wenn man so will Mitläufer. Seine Kollegen wollten nur das ureigenste Recht der Arbeiterklasse ausüben. Sie streikten weil sie mit den Löhnen und Arbeitsvorgaben unzufrieden waren.
Seltsamerweise meinte der „Arbeiter- und Bauernstaat“ die Streiks unter Einsatz von Schußwaffen aufzulösen. Dieser Staat meinte die Zukunft eines 16-jährigen, der nur gewaltfrei demonstrierte vernichten zu müssen.
Ein totalitärer Überwachungsstaat hatte Angst vor einem 16-jährigen! Na Bravo!
der Osten stand schon unter Druck von “oben”. Die Ruhe kam daher, dass man schon die Klappe halten sollte. Noch konnte der 5-Jahresplan punkten, aber mehr und mehr gingen dann doch lieber in den “freien” Westen !!!

Просто наши законодатели решили: раз русский язык у нас второй государственный- будем над ним экспериментировать. Вот и попало слово БЕЛАРУСЬ из одного языка в другой без согласования с другой страной где русский язык главный.
Хоть квадратной грушей назовите нашу страну, а русский язык поганить нельзя никому, даже братьям-славянам.
