Laws have a permanence that transcend election cycles. They do not usually change overnight. They establish trajectories that determine what a country is, and where it is headed. Piper writes: “Christians communicate a falsehood to unbelievers…when we act as if policies and laws that protect life and freedom are more precious than being a certain kind of person.” Piper has it 180 degrees backwards. Laws protecting life and freedom will determine the direction of our country long after Trump, or any other politician, is a distant memory. Laws that protect life and freedom ARE precious.
Piper is making the point that Jesus made to the legalistic Pharisees and the same argument Paul makes in Romans about the law. The law is insufficient and misused by people. The law points out our wickedness and is supposed to lead us to God. However, the embodiment of God (Jesus) is better than written laws that point to Godliness. Our priority as Christians should first be to act like Jesus, then to obey laws. Yes Jesus says “If you love me, you will obey my commandments”.
