People can hate the un all they want but these soldiers don't deserve that hate they risk their lives to try and make the world a better place you can hear it in the song "will our deeds be remembered are they written on stone or in sand" or "have our brothers died in vain" they are scared because people hate the un they will also face hate and resentment which i think is unfair also you should look into more un stuff i recommend watching the movie the seige of jadotville it's about 150 Irish un troops vs 3,000 Congolese troops led by French and Belgian mercenaries working for mining corporations. They fought for 6 days before the un forces had to surrender because they ran out of ammo
Bosnia is arguably a good example of the UNs incompetence the horror stories British peacekeepers came home with a and absolute frustration they had towards the UNs ROE they couldn't even fire back if engaged or help civilians who where being murdered, r**ed and so fourth IN FRONT OF THEM just because the UN didn’t want to be seen as taking sides like. Whats the point of sending in peacekeepers with tanks and guns into a war zone to help and protect civilians and tell said troops you can't help who are about to be executed or raped because we don't want to be seen as taking sides in this civil to me it defeats the purpose of their existence
Because if they fire back people get killed some civilians end up as collateral damage and people blame the un and their soldiers it's a lose lose situation they lose if they fire back they lose if they don't
My grandfather is an ex-peacekeeper from UNIFIL during the 80s, and he said to me that the UN ROE is what's limiting their efficiency. And I think a lot of others (both active and veteran) peacekeepers share that same thought. If only the UN could realize that their ROE can be updated and justified by the urgent need to help ensure the safety of civilians...
This is one of my fav songs, and very unrated. One member of my family work as UN Peace kepper so this touch me
