With their long history of canoes, The canoe was named after the zenith star Arcturus, which passes directly overhead of the Hawaiian Islands and has been named “the star of gladness.”

They should show respect for the Hawaiians and the souls of those who perished by rebuilding Moku‘ula Island.

Thank you for this education. It is shameful that I went through K-12 and university learning exactly one sentence about Hawaii: the year of statehood.

That IS interesting, however the US is doesn’t like to talk about Hawaiian history because part of that history is their illegal overthrow of The Hawaiian Kingdom and if people start learning about that, they’ll start realizing that Hawai’i is not part of the US, but rather an internationally recognized sovereign nation that the US has been illegally occupying since 1893.
Also in the topic of”statehood”, I’m sure they failed to mention that a legal plebiscite vote must:
      1) never be held by an occupying power
      2) must include the option to be continue to be independent.
The ballot only asked, should Hawai’i be admitted to the US as the 50th state with 2 options yes or no… there was no option to be independent. But most importantly, the US, who held this vote illegally, ONLY ALLOWED US CITIZENS TO VOTE, they didn’t allow Hawaiians to vote. And keep in mind the population in Hawai’i went from around 40,000 Hawaiians and 40,000 foreigners at the time of the overthrow to around 50,000 Hawaiians and 500,000 foreigners (mostly American) a little over 60 years later when the statehood vote was held & a very large portion of that foreign population were US military personnel and their families, as well as businessmen who were in the throes of land & resource grabs, trying to exploit everything they could from the islands… so basically it was people who desperately wanted Hawai’i to be part of the US, either for patriotism or for commodification & exploitation.
Also, there was a disclaimer on the back of the ballots that said something to the tune of “a vote for yes means you agree that the lands of Hawai’i will be forfeited to the US”… and again, I remind you, these were Americans ONLY, being allowed to vote illegally, on whether or not they would forfeit OUR lands to them… illegally.
See why they don’t teach you about Hawai’i?? Lol.
I bet they didn’t teach any of that when they taught you about our “statehood”.
Sorry so long, I never pass up an opportunity to educate people on this topic.
      🤙🏽

Correction to her story about Kihawahine and the mo’o of Hawai’i… she said mo’o were able to go from island to island, but in fact only Kihawahine could go from island to island. Most of the other mo’o were actually confined to a certain area. It was Kihawahine’s ability to move about freely that made other mo’o jealous and resentful of Kihawahine… well that and that she was said to very powerful.
