    Ventanilla -- small window
The one the tour guide was pointing to as ventanilla is actually a "barandilya" or railings. It was not just use for ventilation but it was really mainly used as "panooran" of the children during processions or other street activities, wherein the kids could just simply sit and slip their legs in between the "barandilya" to comfortably watch while the adults would stand in front of the windows to enjoy the view from there.

Why can’t Philippines have this. It needs more historical sites and restoration buildings in the Philippines. So sad that many Filipinos go to malls most of the time. It need more of this in order to serve education and curiosity of the past. It would also lovely to see traditional Filipino housing architecture built again in this modern day.

10:00 I'm living in an ancestral home from 1860 here in Leyte, hindi siya gaanong bongga kagaya ng mga makikita niyo dito, but yep, we also have those Ventanilla and malalaking bintana which is super awkward kasi main road na yung harapan namin. I'm just so sad na nasira yung bahay na ito noong bagyong Yolanda and we had no choice but to renovate this inspired from the modern era kasi mahirap nang maghanap ng mga materials para maayos ito dahil mga pure kahoy naman yung mga nandidito. I hope in the future ma reserve pa rin namin ang bahay na ito. And yep, minsan may mga mumu po HAHAHAHA

I still remember our tour guides' trivias about these historical houses during those elem and hs field trips days.
They say you can differentiate the pre colonial aesthetic from the colonial ones based on the first and second floor.
Colonial masons always used Pre colonial filipino architecture at the top/2nd floor of those colonial houses because it serves as the ventilation for the entire building; Using the huge windows, verandahs and the intricate wood designs in the edges of the roof, walls, and arches for easier air flow. It is similar to that of traditional southeast asian architectures.
The spanish/colonial ones, however, can be found in stone walled 1st floors at the bottom of those houses, which has replace the traditional semi stilt ones, for sturdier foundation.
Mixed those two and you'll have your typical colonial Filipino house.
    Aesthetic af 👌
