Neville Brand and Jeffrey Hunter were great character actors. I always felt a little thrill when they came on tv. Both of them had something extra special. Sadly, Jeffrey Hunter died six years after this episode. He was injured on a movie set in a concussive explosion during an action scene. Several months later he had a brain hemorrhage that caused him to fall down the stairs. With his good looks and acting skills, he was destine for a long career. It is sad he never had that chance.

"KVDC2008," . . . And Parker would be back on NBC at decade's end toplining the ensemble cast of "Bracken's World," back to her recognizable, familiar, glamorous look, appropriate for the series' major Hollywood studio setting.
"OUCH" -- What Neville Brand did to her hand -- slamming the cash drawer shut on her fingers -- was so brutal and unforgivable. AND counter-productive because she's HIS cash cow workin' the diner and he nearly put her out of work for two months' time. Were this to be 1983 instead of '63, quite likely Joe, the cook, would have come to her rescue and delivered a pot of hot coffee across the evil sheriff's face.
      Speaking of . . . there's "Starsky & Hutch"'s boss Bernie Hamilton -- a very familiar face -- playing Joe.
"Thank you, 'GR160289,' for sharing this, albeit totally downbeat episode of 'Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre.' Good cast at 'top of their game.'"

If you can make it through the whole program, the last scene will make it worth your while. Very interesting dynamic between Neville Brand and Jeffrey Hunter. Neville steals the show...excellent performance.

“Well, the moral of the story
    The moral of this song
Is simply that one should never be
    Where one does not belong
So when you see your neighbor carrying something
    Help him with his load
    And don't go mistaking Paradise
For that home across the road”

Neville Brand is a decorated US Army infantryman -- 6 medals/ribbons including the Purple Heart & Silver Star. Wounded in action. Double-tough.
Actor Lee Marvin (not in this TV series) was also a decorated Navy man -- 7 medals/ribbons -- including the Purple Heart. Marvin was also wounded in action.
Just thought it needed saying since their acting ability is often cited as great -- these two men were great -- period.
    There are others.

In the Café they the cook who is Bernie Hamilton from Starsky and Hutch is talking to Gabe about the war, probably WW2, The cook who we assume was a soldier asks gabe if he remembers it. Gabe basically says he was around but to young to know anything about it. In reality Gabe played by Jeffrey Hunter is 2 years older than Hamiton. Hunter born in 26, Hamilton born in 28.

Jeff's career might not have fulfilled the promise he had. One can only wonder how history might have been if he had accepted the lead in the Star Trek TV show. However, being in 2 John Ford films,& portraying Jesus is pretty darn impressive for any actor.

Jeffrey Hunter and Elanor Parker were two of my favorites also. I think she was the most beautiful woman ever to come out of Hollywood. Brand was scary. Ending was unusual to say the least. And such a sad end for Hunter. Well done with great acting on the leads. Released just before JFK was killed..

Three weeks out of four during the years from 1963 through 1967, "Chrysler Theatre" was broadcast, with filmed dramas introduced by Bob Hope. The fourth week, there was a Chrysler-sponsored Bob Hope variety special.
In the early 1970's, this series was rerun on NBC as a summer replacement, but the original Bob Hope introductions were replaced by new introductions done by men who at the time were hosts of NBC's daytime game shows.
Is there any chance this series can be released on DVD, including the original "Chrysler" opening and Bob Hope's introductions??

    • @AdmiralNelson1000

Thank you for the historical input. Appreciated. My guess is that IF they EVER release the series, it will be without Bob Hope and the Chryslers (I hope that won't be the case).

Very well done movie but depressing; yet another industry portrayal of US as a country of narcissistic psychopaths and yes men who spinelessly follow them. It’s nowadays seen as the norm in the entertainment industry. How sad. Nonetheless, it’s Jeffrey Hunter and worth my watching again 👍🏾

Thanks for the video, I luv the old shows. This episode: The only thing this had going for it is Jeffrey Hunter, The Woman & Neville Brand I still want to know who killed the woman at the start of the show? Evidently it wasn't important who killed the woman, but to point out that the Sheriff was an uber father for a town full of less than exemplary folk, seeing as the point was the dead woman was a ho and the husband was a drunkard, And then the drifter. I guess in the story line is to point out he was the last of a dying breed of man who stood for what he believes in no matter the cost.

The episode was great, the moral was neat!
I can only feel the weight of his sense of duty and responsibility for the others who would be truly lost without his leadership.
Did you also notice that the sheriff said: 'I'll take my dog and my woman ...'
I mean, and no offence intended, who can you trust more in a death or life situation? A dog needs leadership, but on the other hand a woman ...
