Marc Daniel Nelson is a latin Grammy nominated producer / mixer. He has been producing, mixing and managing creatives for over 20 years. His music credits include Fleetwood Mac, Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat, Eric Burdon, Ozomatli, Robert Duvall, Reik and more.
His music for film includes Solo, Blade Runner 2049, Fractured, The Expanse, Amanda, Point Break, No Manches Frida, Father Figures, The Last Full Measure and more.

Great. Are these multi tracks that'll work with any DAW, or PT projects?
Big fan of Warren and pro mix academy, the course is 2h 40min for two songs , I’m hesitating to buy cos of that , not sure if my money will be well spent. With all due respect I just don’t see how you can mix two songs in 2h40mins. Can anyone explain to me the structure of this course please, is it worth it?

As Marc was implying, it's like Isaac Newton saying he was able to "stand on the shoulders of giants to see further". The great work of earlier Producers, Engineers & Mixers shouldn't be forgotten as their work allows us to be where we are today.
Thanks to Marc for the tip on the Simgot EN700 Pro ear buds. Great sounding pieces for the price. Nice to be able to have options that don't break the bank when you need to get some work down on the road.
You can absolutley recreate the working conditions of analog mixer and tape machine in your DAW with Uad apollo and plugins emulating it all in real-time. But it takes commitment to do that so most people add,s it in the mixing stage instead. What Warren says is true it all used to be natural saturation from tubes transformers and tape being driven so there was not the same needs for alot of signal processing back in the days with compression and plugins emulating tape saturation and transformers like it is today if you want that sound signature and are recording and mixing with a DAW.
Transients move air. It’s an audio/physical thing. Even subtle transients. That’s why live music always “feels” better. I don’t know if that can be totally be retained in a mix, but I’ll be rooting for Marc to figure it out. 😁

Good point by Warren that less compression is needed in analog mixing. Maybe it's possible to get a similar result in digital mixing with saturation plugins etc. And UAD Luna even has optional analog summing emulation in the DAW.
Townshend on Tommy, Harrison on Here Comes The Sun, Page on LZ I, Beck on Truth - all J200 with tune-a -matic bridge. Some of my favorite acoustic guitar sounds ever.
Oh weedywet! Haha most of Tommy is that wonderful Sovereign 12 String (JJ has one, sounds fantastic and sounds exactly like Pinball Wizard guitar sound, not close but exactly!) Here Comes the Sun is capo on the 7th fret, not going to get any boominess up there!
I would have to argue the best Led Zeppelin acoustic guitar by far is again the Harmony Sovereign, Stairway To Heaven is a little song that used it!
The only acoustic to my knowledge on Truth (one of my favourite albums) is of course Greensleeves, all finger picked! Beautiful, if it is a J200 that’s cool, but again not much chance of boomy chords on that either when there isn’t any!
@@Producelikeapro Both Beck and Page borrowed Mickie Most's J200 (which had the tune-o-metic). You can hear that weird snappy top e string on Black Mountain Side that only that bridge gives you, same as on Here Comes The Sun (and other Harrison in that era). But my all time favourite acoustic guitar sound is what Townshend got on Tommy (notably the acoustic solo at the end of the Overture). They're not nearly as prized as the 'regular' bridge models, but thet oddball J200 with the electric bridge remains my favourite, in part because it balances out the intrinsic boom of that giant body. cheers, w2

MJUC for acoustic guitar, what a great idea, I had the Lindell 354 because the playing was a bit rough and inconsistent, but the MJUC sounds clearer (auto time) and can even out things as well.

I get great results using a SM57 going through UAD Neve 1073 and Oxide Tape. Mic placement just like Warren does, toward the lower body neck side of sound hole

a detailed group structure that ends up in registers in terms of musical "director/conductor" thinking, it helps a lot with solo and mute checks (what is the brass doing here, or give me all harmony vocals plus all guitars etc.), and helps with quickly changing the mood of the piece, like having bass and drums on one fader, or all room-like sounds (=not the audible reverb effects) etc., so you get different versions fast.

Back in"The. Day", I had the honor of working with Bruce Swedien when Michael. did "Dangeroous" with Teddy Riley. Dave Way was Teddy's engineer and came with him freom NY. (Dave is such a great guy, engineer, Dad, and one of my favorite drummers to play with...) To see and chat with Bruce almost everyday for months was a high point. in my career that cannot be equaled. In one room, hooked up to Larrabee's 96 i/o SSL 4000 G was 2 Studer A800 24 tks with Dolby SR, a Sony 3348 (1/2 digital multitrack ) AND a mitsubishi x850 1" 32 tk digital machine. The to see 5 tape recorders locked up in sync is a cool accompilshment, and something the" Young'ns" will never see unfortunately.
Warren, you made the comment about the all analog workflow of records back then, and how the path was filled with components that added compression and harmonic artifacts. EXACTLY.. Which in digital we are sorta emulating with plugins, to varying amounts of success
But it;s more subtle. than that, Childrens..
When recording to a Studer 2" machine, there is internal compression going to AND expansion coming off of tape, not to mention the Dolby SR which used a "multiband compansion "technique to do it's job. It's one. of the reasons Studers sound sooo goood. Bruce Swedien would track to the Studers, and when they had the take, they would transfer it to the 3348 or X850 to save it digitally for no degradation from head wear, or rmagnetic hysteresis (weakening tape signal). Im sorry for the long winded comment, but you guys brought up a great memory pertinent to your subject. I've been doing this for a long time, and I feel like a noob again watching your videos and hearing tricks and tips from great engineers like you two.

9:03 -Neve 542's have solved all of this for me. I have not been happy since the dawn of digi recording, until these fabulous devices.
The older Neves added even more heat to the room. Still if given a chance to get an early one or even a few channel modules, I would probably grab them

Question for Marc. On the Simgots 700EN Pro for mixing- do you use the bright ear-tips (#1) or the ones with more low end (#2). Mine just arrived. The bright's are "bright" detail!!... Had to turn down the volume immediately...The bassy ones (#2) sound so good - listening to Brian Bromberg's Soul Intro / The Chicken (Jaco)...now.. can't stop! Thanks for the recommend.

They are really bright.. I just use them on really low volume..

I Just picked up the Lindell 80 Series plugin. The limitatations have absolutely been so helpful at forcing myself to Do Less! It and a tape emulation have become pretty much all I use on everything now lol.
Yes there is a sale going on at PA right now. How does it sound across an entire mix?
@@massivebeatzz I think it sounds great. I can't compare it to the real thing, but I prefer it to the Slate Virtual Console and EQ I was using before. The compressor and gate are fantastic too. Very easy to get a mix happening fast.

Please dedicate a show to re-amping. I get the idea but practically I don't. Do you go to an external recorder, and if you don't how do you avoid latency problems?
Mp3 hi-freq cutoff is 19.5kHz @320kb and 16kHz for 128kb bitrate.
I was wondering if you could maybe one day do an explainer of the old school Dolby recording, mixing ‘hot’ up to +3dB RMS into the Dolby Noise Reduction system then on to tape? Is it possible to emulate that by driving the tape saturation in a similar way or is that actually what we are achieving by using saturation?
Also I suspect the Waves Renaissance plugins enhance harmonics with saturation so that, for example, the higher frequencies of a bass are enhanced making the bass more audible through low quality speakers like in a phone or kiosk display.

I bought it and it's really good! It's a step by step proper analysis rather the typical 'ums and ahs' that most of the 'other' companies do. Marc feels like a natural teacher who cares a lot!

Ehum..honestly I feel I'd like a refund. There are essential audio files missing and support is non existent. So if your aim is to exactly follow along and get a mix with the same musltitracks..at this point not working. Just a heads up..

But I've seen so many videos from Warren about the use of serial compression on the same track, even with acoustic guitars. So, I wonder what you think about these 2 approaches,. Finally had time to watch this! Spectacular information as always. I particularly geeked out on the converter talk. I recently purchased a Neve 1073OPX with the USB/DANTE card. While I haven't had much time to track through it. I'm finding that anything I playback through it sounds phenomenal! Obviously eons better than my Focusrite Scarlett gear. Aside from the preamps themselves in the 1073OPX (i.e. missing the output transformers), any thoughts on the Neve conversion?

Where is Rick Beato and you guys getting all of these isolated trax / stems for his channel? do these stem generators that I see now really work well now? Thought there would be kickback from the publishers / copyright holders of the songs that have been separated into stems / isolated trax. @@Producelikeapro I just checked. It is - at least one developer works on both projects. Ardour appears to be benefiting from this in terms of new features. Nice. I've been involved with Linux audio long enough not to suggest that anyone should switch DAWs, particularly if they've already committed to learning Pro Tools, however it is a viable alternative capable of professional results for those interested in an Open Source approach. Mixbus 6 walks between the worlds, so to speak.
What I am saying is that I can probably share my experience with other Mixbus users in that case.

Ok so Warren, I heard him say he shoots for -4db on the mix bus before Mastering, so... What do you shoot for? Not to beat a dead horse. Sorry. I used to shoot for -10db so I'm thinking I will now go a little hotter pre master. Thanks for evs bro!
Hi David, great question! I ask all the Mastering Engineers who I've interviewed (maybe 20?) and they all say, they don't care as long as it's not clipping! So whether it's -4 or -10 that's fine! Just don't digitally clip it.

Dead obvious here, but… To just sidestep all that “excitement of compression vs transients” battle, use parallel compression. I almost never do anything else, for 30 years. With careful level setting, you get the best of both worlds and it makes the whole question moot.
