    • @joech1065
      @joech1065 Рік тому +19

      It's like you know nothing about Russia at all. Russia is not a “sovereign nation”, it's a brutal dictatorship with no rule of law that pretends to be a normal country. Calling it a “sovereign nation” makes it sound like you think it's an average country, with normal laws and a normal prison system. It's not.
      She got unlucky to give them an “excuse” to capture her, but “laws” in Russia are designed in such a way that you can imprison anybody, and keeping her in prison is also a political decision, because, as I said, there's no rule of law in Russia, one call from FSB and she'll be held in prison forever with more charges found, another call and she'll be released immediately.
      Prison sentences in Russia are always about politics or money eventually. Even if you end up in the hands of the system by being an average criminal, like you steal something from a supermarket, once you enter the prison system, it becomes more about money, ор politics, оr resource extraction rather than your original crime, as you become essentially like an object to them, a resource, that they think about exploiting somehow. In Russia, the prisons are managed by ФСИН, which are curated by FSB. If you have money or an apartment or relatives, they can extort you. If you're nobody with nothing, they can torture you and force you to confess to more crimes and say anything they need to add points for their promotion. If you're an American, FSB will be involved 100% and will curate everything that happens to you, as normal Russians can easily be brutally tortured or raped in prisons, and easily killed as torture methods in average prisons are not sophisticated and often involve blunt force: severe beatings, which can easily cause internal bleeding; long rapes with large object that can puncture guts. At the very least they don't want scandals like that with foreigners. So for sure FSB is curating this and fine tuning her “living conditions”.
      But, like I said before, to them she's a resource, a hostage they can keep in hopes of gaining something. Calling her just a normal prisoner is ridiculous if you undertand Russia.

    This is a terrible situation but she’s not a hostage. She entered a foreign country and broke their laws. The laws are very notorious and explicit. Follow the laws of the countries you enter or stay home. American egos especially those of athletes believe they’re above the law no matter where they are. You can’t compare punishment in Russia to punishment in the US. Do the crime, do the time. Otherwise visit a country, obey the laws and go home safely. Stop justifying her crime. It was a crime there, period. It is what it is. She should’ve left her meds at home. Or, stayed home if she needed them that badly. It’s not even legal in most US states so let’s stop trying to pretend like it is.

      @@valeriebenwell2573 You’re welcome to think whatever you want, but my point, which is fact not opinion, is that she broke the law in a foreign country and has to face the consequences. The consequences and punishment are what they are, whether we agree with them or not. My comment was not intended to address personal opinion about the harshness of her sentence. At the end of the day she chose to bring drugs, regardless of the amount, into a foreign country where it’s illegal. Even the smallest amount of drug possession there can land a minimum of 3 years up to 15 and remember a prison sentence can be a work camp. That should be enough to make any foreigner leave their drugs at home. Common sense dictates the punishment will be harsher on a foreigner, especially a Black female. Let’s take heed to that so others won’t do the same thing and make the same poor assumptions she made. Why is that so hard for people to understand? I'm a medical cannabis patient myself. When you are a legal card holder you sign paperwork that states that you are not to go to " anywhere" but where you are issued the card with any cannabis products you receive from the dispensary. If you violate that agreement you forfeit the card & can not get it back plus if you cross " state" lines you will be dealt with by the laws that state has for such a violation. Now that's just states but if you leave the country & get caught somewhere like Russia, you have to deal with it plain and simple. Some countries have a severe punishment for these violations such as life sentences. I'm sorry, but that's how it is. Also Griner said things some things she should not have said against the US. I find it hard to be upset by her situation. When you cross over into Russian territory, you are then at their mercy period!!! She was & is still aware of her situation. No excuses at this point. There's a few people here in the US doing more than 10yrs for possession of a joint!!! Look it up!! I don't agree with punishments here in the US for possession of cannabis. But folks,... it's a federal violation if you are in possession of cannabis still to this day.

      She was caught trying to sneak out of Russia while out on bail, with the help of the American embassy.
      These things move so slow, as evident by all this news coverage and since she only got a year it wouldn't make sense to battle Russia for her release because by the time anything was done she'll be released for time served. My guess.
      I don't think Griner should have gotten a near decade sentence but..... She is responsible for her predicament. When you go into a foreign country, especially one like Russia and bring something illegal into said country what do you expect will happen. She may claim she brought it in error but that's no excuse. If I'm going to Russia I'm going to double check, triple check I don't have anything remotely close to being considered illegal in my bags.
