I sympathize with them. However , you can’t tell a sovereign nation how to enforce their laws.
It's like you know nothing about Russia at all. Russia is not a “sovereign nation”, it's a brutal dictatorship with no rule of law that pretends to be a normal country. Calling it a “sovereign nation” makes it sound like you think it's an average country, with normal laws and a normal prison system. It's not.
She got unlucky to give them an “excuse” to capture her, but “laws” in Russia are designed in such a way that you can imprison anybody, and keeping her in prison is also a political decision, because, as I said, there's no rule of law in Russia, one call from FSB and she'll be held in prison forever with more charges found, another call and she'll be released immediately.
Prison sentences in Russia are always about politics or money eventually. Even if you end up in the hands of the system by being an average criminal, like you steal something from a supermarket, once you enter the prison system, it becomes more about money, ор politics, оr resource extraction rather than your original crime, as you become essentially like an object to them, a resource, that they think about exploiting somehow. In Russia, the prisons are managed by ФСИН, which are curated by FSB. If you have money or an apartment or relatives, they can extort you. If you're nobody with nothing, they can torture you and force you to confess to more crimes and say anything they need to add points for their promotion. If you're an American, FSB will be involved 100% and will curate everything that happens to you, as normal Russians can easily be brutally tortured or raped in prisons, and easily killed as torture methods in average prisons are not sophisticated and often involve blunt force: severe beatings, which can easily cause internal bleeding; long rapes with large object that can puncture guts. At the very least they don't want scandals like that with foreigners. So for sure FSB is curating this and fine tuning her “living conditions”.
But, like I said before, to them she's a resource, a hostage they can keep in hopes of gaining something. Calling her just a normal prisoner is ridiculous if you undertand Russia.
Yes, you can

Stop crying. What she did in another country was against the law. She did the crime, she has to do the time. If you know right from wrong, and do wrong, then you will suffer the consequences.
This is a terrible situation but she’s not a hostage. She entered a foreign country and broke their laws. The laws are very notorious and explicit. Follow the laws of the countries you enter or stay home. American egos especially those of athletes believe they’re above the law no matter where they are. You can’t compare punishment in Russia to punishment in the US. Do the crime, do the time. Otherwise visit a country, obey the laws and go home safely. Stop justifying her crime. The consequences and punishment are what they are, whether we agree with them or not. My comment was not intended to address personal opinion about the harshness of her sentence. At the end of the day she chose to bring drugs, regardless of the amount, into a foreign country where it’s illegal. Even the smallest amount of drug possession there can land a minimum of 3 years up to 15 and remember a prison sentence can be a work camp. That should be enough to make any foreigner leave their drugs at home. Common sense dictates the punishment will be harsher on a foreigner, especially a Black female. Russian laws actually favor women. A woman in Russia cannot be sentenced to more than 15 years in prison, even if she commits the most heinous crimes. People say the nation is cruel, but the U.S. is actually harsher.
Russia has these strict laws against illicit drugs to protect its citizens. That is more than I can say the US does for us. We have many Americans dying everyday from the harmful effects of drugs. I'm a medical cannabis patient myself. When you are a legal card holder you sign paperwork that states that you are not to go to " anywhere" but where you are issued the card with any cannabis products you receive from the dispensary. If you violate that agreement you forfeit the card & can not get it back plus if you cross " state" lines you will be dealt with by the laws that state has for such a violation. Now that's just states but if you leave the country & get caught somewhere like Russia, you have to deal with it plain and simple. Some countries have a severe punishment for these violations such as life sentences. I'm sorry, but that's how it is. Also Griner said things some things she should not have said against the US. I find it hard to be upset by her situation. When you cross over into Russian territory, you are then at their mercy period!!! She was & is still aware of her situation. No excuses at this point. There's a few people here in the US doing more than 10yrs for possession of a joint!!! Look it up!! I don't agree with punishments here in the US for possession of cannabis. Hopefully they will 'all' be freed.
She got convicted for assault. She only got 1 year much less than Grinder's near decade.
She was caught trying to sneak out of Russia while out on bail, with the help of the American embassy.
These things move so slow, as evident by all this news coverage and since she only got a year it wouldn't make sense to battle Russia for her release because by the time anything was done she'll be released for time served. My guess.
I don't think Griner should have gotten a near decade sentence but..... She is responsible for her predicament. When you go into a foreign country, especially one like Russia and bring something illegal into said country what do you expect will happen. She may claim she brought it in error but that's no excuse. If I'm going to Russia I'm going to double check, triple check I don't have anything remotely close to being considered illegal in my bags. Wouldn't bring a cigarette or alcohol much less an illegal substance.

This is straight BS!! She doesn’t deserve to do a 9 year prison sentence at all for a prescription drug. They know this is BS that is why they are willing to negotiate. WTF!! I feel so bad for this young woman. I know Russia have there laws but dam 9 years is insane
So True!!!
It’s their laws. Maybe she’ll appreciate America if she makes it through. Girl needs to learn respect. Respect for the country she was born in and respect for a country that has different laws.
@@lisafilly464 what? Did you not know this young lady considered Russia to be her 2nd home. I’m sure she knows the laws and possibly forgot she had MEDICAL drugs in her suitcase. Only a fool would not know this if you’ve been going back and forth. I don’t think she was intentionally trying to break the rules. It’s not like that woman was a drug dealer lord have mercy
@@Saveusall52 if she considered Russia her 2nd home then she’d respect their laws. Only a “fool” as you put it wouldn’t remember putting her prescription drugs in her bag. Russia doesn’t care if the U.S. prescribed it or not. It’s their laws and she broke it. Why not be more outraged at the school teacher being held in prison. No mention of her. @@lisafilly464 girl bye
Wait, so Brittney is the "wife"? And then she says, "BG wanted to know why we didn't see the need to get her back home, was her life worth nothing." I sense a lot of entitlement and someone who is defiant of her own actions that led her to be where she is. Why is this even a White House issue? Had the US government sent her to Russia to play ball on our nation's behalf? Did she break the law while undercover? Seriously, we have the economy to fix over here, lots of children going to bed hungry every night, lots of people in America incarcerated for minor cannabis offenses...let's advocate for their release.
I agree with , you broke the law you pay the price .
Perfectly said. Obviously no regard for her dissing her country. Who does she think she is?
What does children going hungry every night have to do with her? If she gets out, will the kids eat? They aren't related. If you want to advocate for them, go ahead. Nobody is stopping you.
@@jn3084 Not perfectly said, of course. A lot of nonsense.
I pray to God in heaven that you experience the same; especially your children. Ashé
This "wife" is sure making the rounds getting some notoriety
His wife should read the comments and see that BG is not as loved as the two of them think she is. She plead guilty. The sentence in that country is 9 years. There is no conspiracy here. She’s a criminal
I LEAN MORE TOWARDS BEING A REPUBLICAN.. *but* I do ~NOT~ think that 9 years in a prison/work-camp is the punishment warranted for this crime!! 0.7 gram of medical oil *shouldn’t* warrant 9 years! If you do the crime you pay the time BUT THIS IS JUST TOO MUCH!
If Putin sees this interview this interview alone will make him not want to let her go because because of the disrespect respect he feels you can't even ask and apologize correctly for Violet in their country Laws
Not sure why we are still talking about this. She broke the law in another country. So she needs to do the time this make no sense at all.
So she's been there several times she knows the rules.
@@theseventhsteel The crime doesn't fit the punishment. 8 years is ridiculous. She wasn't trafficking drugs. Give me a a break. Get real.

I have traveled there several times from Moscow to Moldova to Romania and my wife and I party with family and friends. We have family there as well as own 2 flats. So I am very familiar with Russia and it's laws. If she has travel there and worked there as her wife stated then she knows the laws. They are written in plan sight. I think she may have got a little big headed thinking because she was whom she was that she would be ok but that is not the case. Have you ever been to Russia or traveled outside of the USA? If so the 1st thing on my mind when I go is to not do something stupid in another country. So I would say the same because wrong is wrong the law is the law.
@@jmfia2391 and this is not the the US its another country. I understand she wasn't trafficking drugs. But Russia is a no drug country period the penalty is very harsh. I have been able to travel alot in my existence and I always say I'm glad I live in the USA people whom have never travel outside the US have no idea. So these are countries that have the death penalty for what BG did ... Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam so 9 years is cake...lol
Unlawfully detained, lmfao..I guess that admitting that you broke the law is being wrongfully detained..might be legal here but it’s illegal there!…
I'm not a fan of any type of marijuana or drug, but since they legalized it, shouldn't they put signs in airports that marijuana is not legal in other states across the country. I feel like this should have been done, since they legalized the stinky garbage. Let's still say a prayer for both prisoners, stand together with our country.
