- Paul Whelan, an American who is wrongfully detained in Russia, told CNN's Jennifer Hansler in an exclusive phone call from a Russian prison camp, that he feels confident that his case is a priority for the US government but wishes it could be resolved faster.

The fact that this veteran has been sitting for 4 years or so and gets passed up for Griner alone is disgusting. He should have been 1st to be freed no question. They gave up Viktor Bout, a known ex-KGB agent who has sold literally tons of weapons and ammo amongst other things for decades to genocidal warlords. Hence the nickname (merchant of death). That's the most lopsided and unfair trade I've ever heard of. Now Bout is free to help Russia during the war in Ukraine, doing what he does best, procuring weapons and smuggling them. All this idiocy for one bonehead basketball player whom doesn't have enough brain power to understand that taking drugs into another country, especially Russia, might not be a good idea given all the tension that's been going on for years, with other Americans being detained as well. It's just ridiculous and disgusting. But I think if we're honest we all know the 3 reasons why Griner got released much quicker and ahead of everyone else. Sorry but I practice realism.
Unfortunately, this is the sad reality with Biden in office. I wish Russia would have enough common sense to realize what has happened.

I think the importance of Paul Whelan being released is on the back burner for the US, sadly. To trade a world known and convicted arms dealer to the level and time in which Viktor Bout was leading his business for a basketball player is a slap in the face for the US. To me Paul should've been a higher priority, ie. a thought to be an espionage spy for world known arms dealer is an even "trade" in my eyes. I agree with you. Whelan should've been priority number one. I still can get why they think a convicted arms dealer has the same weight as a drug dealer basketball player. Who has never considered the red flags of the ongoing tensions between the US and Russia and that being the American caught smuggling drugs, especially if you're LGBTQ in not friendly LGBTQ country, things would end badly for you. I feel like America has never warned LGBTQ people about traveling to a country like this.
