- How Does Sainfoin Meet Today's Needs?
A silage or hay crop with grazing aftermath for dry, alkaline soils. There are few crops like sainfoin. It is a high-yielding, drought-resistant plant which needs no nitrogen fertiliser and little phosphate. It won't cause bloat, is a natural anthelmintic and with rumen protected protein produces top quality meat and milk.
Sainfoin has deep penetrating roots making it highly suitable for the dry, alkaline soils of England. In these times of fluctuating feed and veterinary drugs prices, alongside increased environmental demands, there are few crops that tick as many boxes.

Very knowledgeable and intelligent farmer with a great looking crop that’s not only great for fattening livestock but is great for the bees and other insects and environment as well! Fantastic 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🐝
It's beautiful to look at, it's low maintenance, it feeds the cattle, the flowers produce honey, it's drought resistant... all farms in the UK should have at least a small section of their field filled with this plant! :)
What other names does this plant have? I grew it a few years ago, and it's absolutely beautiful. I remember it being called a type of Clover, but I can't remember. I think I need new seeds, as the ones I have don't seem to sprout anymore. I do remember that bees loved it.
Beautiful! I will plant it for the bees this year.
Very interesting contribution. I only discovered this "cinderella" last year. It isn´t very known in Germany either. I absolutely agree with you that it is a pleasure to look at.
This man knows how to farm.
Saw Adam Henson's field of sainfoin on BBC's Countryfile last Sunday. He's about to make his second cut! Perhaps there will be more converts with him promoting it. Apart from all the other benefits, it's so pretty!
That was also the first time I had ever heard of it too.
Outstanding!
Awsome!
Hi Frederico, we can supply any mixture you wish, its all part of the service. Usually however, Sainfoin is supplied by itself, because it is a large seed and requires drilling. If you choose to use companion grasses with it (which is a good idea if you are worried about weeds, or yield), we supply those separately to be broadcast onto the ground after the Sainfoin has been drilled. Sainfoin is also used in more complex mixtures with various grasses and herbs.
To get an idea of which species are sometimes sown alongside Sainfoin it would be worth looking at this page (cut and paste into your browser):

For more information on Sainfoin in particular this page is worth a good look too: www.cotswoldseeds.com/seedmix/sainfoin
Is the mixture shown here sold by Cotswold Seeds as a ready-made product ?
Is it correct to assume that Sanfoin's scientific name is Onobrychis viciaefolia ?
I'm getting a little confused, in today's agriculture, where all cultures are standardized, finding the right seeds to suit your needs is critical - and a lot of work..
What are the ratios of this blend? What is the seeding rate of this mix?
We have an apiary in SW Colorado and used an inoculant on the seeds before planting? Do you do that in your larger fields there?
I've read that an inoculant isn't needed or used for Sainfoin -- no idea why that is.
Any anti parasitic effect or health benefits of these plants?
Yes! Sainfoin has condensed tannins which have a natural anthelmintic effect, as well as improving protein digestibility while eliminating the risk of bloat.
I would very much like to sow the same mixture, but my English does not allow me to pick up the other herbs he mentions: can anybody please help ?
Thank you.
Sainfoin, cock's-foot, and meadow fescue.
