This felt like one of those classic Midwestern 80s matchups. Watching this at times makes me imagine Dr. Dunkenstein going up against Antoine Carr and the old-school Shockers.
Another footnote. When Louisville was given a #4 seed in the 2005 WEST bracket, Gregg Marshall was the coach of the #14 seed in that same bracket (Winthrop), who lost a 74-64 game to #3 Gonzaga, whose first NCAA tourament win under Mark Few happened in Denny Crum's last game as coach (2000 - #7 Louisville vs. #10 Gonzaga). Eight years later, Gonzaga lost to Marshall's next school, Wichita St.
I have NEVER been more nervous in my 28 years of watching basketball as a Louisville fan. MUCH respect to Wichita State and their fans. I enjoyed the interaction with them. Had Louisville not been in the final four I would have been a huge Shocker fan.
In my highly biased opinion (WSU alum here), I think THIS was the championship game. It came down to the last few plays. Those last four minutes were thrilling to say the least. I am sorry my Shox lost but so proud of the way we played all tourney long!
Louisville fan here, this Shocker team put the world on notice that the Shockers were for real. I had never heard or seen them play until the year of this tourney.
Other notes: When Louisville made the 2005 Final Four, their bracket had three of the four coaches they faced in 2013: Oregon - Dana Altman (Creighton, lost 63-61 to West Virginia in the Round of 64). Michigan - John Beilein (West Virginia, despite shooting 18/27 from three lost in OT in the Elite 8). Also, Rick Pitino's second Final Four was an 81-78 loss to the Fab Five coached by Steve Fisher Gregg Marshall (Winthrop, lost 74-64 to Gonzaga who Marshall's Shockers would stun in the Round of 32 eight years later). A year before, Wichita St was the 5 seed in Kentucky's bracket and a lot of folks thought they were Sweet 16 good until they met VCU for a second year.
It's funny because ULs performance actually improved only after they got rid of those two and Pitino essentially said as much in his interviews. As for Germ, it never gets old hearing Card fans playing the ref card in trying to rationalize the utter dominance they have succumb to by the Cats.
Jerm Johnson Yeah, UL didn't flop at all, lol. You should make reference to the fact that UKs offense involved using their size and driving to the basket and in combination with the new rules last year, it resulted in a large amount of free throws. More importantly, you should also stop crying like a bitch an remember that we beat you TWICE last year and every meeting except one since Cal started. I like your success little bro, but know your place.
ktrigg2 ware and chane were out so early in the season that we never really got to see Louisville with all the pieces to the puzzle. Louisville was going to improve anyway. teams either get better or get worse throughout the season. Louisville rebounded from the setbacks and despite that became a contender in march. im not gonna cry about the Kentucky game. UK was the better team. they were in dec and they were in march. I just think it would have been a different ball game had ware and chane played those games.
Worth noting that Rick Pitino himself was impressed with Wichita State since November 2012 when they went to VCU and beat the Rams. He considered them as a team to watch since then. Also noting they were the third Missouri Valley team (league we was a part of many decades ago) we faced that season (Northern Iowa and Illinois State were the other two and they were just as tough as this game).
Such a great game. Honestly college basketball isn’t the same. It was slowly going downhill at this time. But once they made it to where kids back pretty much be recruited to other teams it’s really going to hurt college basketball. Coaches will have hard times developing kids because ether if the kid doesn’t feel he’s getting enough pt he’ll leave or if the coach does make him into something while at a smaller school he’ll probably leave to a “better school”.
Agreed. Wichita State (before a few bad conference losses), was as high as #15 in the polls. I actually picked the Shockers to get to the Elite 8, and thought that the first semifinal was gonna be UL/OSU.
I hope Chane learns from this recent suspension. Against UK and even UNC (should we meet), we're gonna have to get the big guys involved (not just Montrezl, also Mangok, Stephan), somewhat similar to how UConn did against the Wildcats in the 2011 Final Four (which was partially why they edged them in the rebounding category).
The MVC is gonna be interesting to watch. A lot of people are hyped up about Wichita State, but they should consider the fact that they lost PG Malcolm Armstead (West Region MOP) as well as frontcourt player Carl Hall (who blocked 6 shots against Ohio State in the West Regional final).
Sucks the Shox lost. But that was a really good game. It was actually better than the Championship game. Wichita went up big in both halves and Louisville fought all the way back.
Interesting you mentioned that, because we play Missouri State this year who will probably want to play a slowdown game. Wichita State (as Rick referred to them as 'Marquette on Steroids') usually isn't a slowdown team, although they can grind it out at times (which was Gregg Marshall's game plan).
Unless they are a top three seed (potentially unlikely), Wichita State will not play in St. Louis since the MVC is hosting that pod (on the other hand, it's very likely the Cards will play there as a top three seed, dominated Arkansas 96-66 the last time they were in the Scottrade Center - 2009).
How do you call a jump ball in one second? I've seen scrums for the ball where more than two people have their hands on the ball for 2-3 seconds. Also reaching around the guys waist with both arms, barely touched the ball. At the end of the game no less. Incredibly weak call.
@7000ironman, As a Michigan fan I would love to see where you were when these so called UofM fans told you that Louisville was a hick school. Odd notes behind Hancock's performance in this game, as well as the school he played for in the past: At George Mason, he hit a late three against Villanova which gave the Patriots the lead they would not lose (he did not play with the Patriots against Ohio St in the Round of 32 - 2011). George Mason, who in 2006 and when Hancock was a player was under Larranaga, was the team who Wichita St's Sweet 16 appearance back in 2006 ended against (a rematch of a bracketbuster game a month before).

Greg Marshall (Wichita State head coach) recently said Wichita State and Michigan should play for the "real" 2013 title. Also said how they're two respectable programs who are clean and do things the right way. Well Mr. Marshall, can you tell us who paid Fred VanVleet (on this team) to go to Wichita State? The possession arrow needs to be eliminated. Makes absolutely no sense and puts the game in the hands of the refs. I'll never forget this game. It was handed to Louisville with a bow on it.
too bad louisville had to vacate this victory and the championship
UK's clownface fans sure cared about 2012. And they sure care about next season's recruits as well. 1 season is all UK's freshmen give the university. Your school has turned into a joke. Bow down to the kings.

GO CARDS!!
Ncaa wow
Louisville played poorly, still won. Wich St played so-so, lost. Best performance from both teams would still yield a Cardinal victory.
Amazing, the coaches are both gone.
commentator can insult rules
Greg Marshall (Wichita State head coach) recently said Wichita State and Michigan should play for the "real" 2013 title. Also said how they're two respectable programs who are clean and do things the right way. Well Mr. Marshall, can you tell us who paid Fred VanVleet (on this team) to go to Wichita State? Clean and the right way, like your shit don't stink, right? Whatever. No Louisville players on this team received money.
