Persimmon Seminar Highlights

Autumn months bring their own bounty from fruitscapes, and today we are learning all about persimmons, including growing and eating your own. They bear fruit just in time for Halloween, through the Christmas season, making them great additions to holiday decorations. Keep in mind though, one variety is sweet and edible right off the tree, while the other is inedibly astringent until properly ripened. From excellent nutritional value, to beautiful mature trees, persimmon trees are a great addition to any garden or orchard!

Growingfruit has several forum topics on persimmons. Nikita gift is supposedly very notorious for young tree fruit loss. According to the forums, this may be related to the fact that this variety does not grow any further once the veg. growth has finished for the year. Many varieties, in contrast, will have a secondary growth spurt mid season. If the plant uptakes excess nitrogen after this growth phase, it would have no place to go but in the fruit, causing fruit drop. 'Unused nitrogen' builds up in the calyx and by some means leads to fruit drop. Also fruit drop can be caused by watering after a dry period due to the new water re-monbilizing nitrogen
