Bought a 2018 model of this bike (with TFT) 2 weeks ago. Completely besotted. Traded up from F750GS. I'm about 5/8 and 1/2 and can get most of my feet on the ground. I think people worry too much about height with the GS. Got seat set at the lowest height. It's a 'King of the Road bike! :) Got 2-year warranty and will upgrade for the white 1250 Rallye when that runs out, just in time for my 60th Birthday! Cheers for the reviews Andy.

I love this bike. Its higher suspension etc give it some of the best off-road features of the Adventure without all that extra touring size. Nice styling. $21,500 base price in the US. For knocking down dirt roads in the backcountry, this is it. I'd make the same choices for windscreen and seat, and I'd swap out to 50/50 tires.

Nice review! Am glad I went for the GSA. Now soon 3 weeks owner of one and about 2,000 kilometers of riding. Took me a few days to get used to, and adjust myself to it. Came from an RT so the gap wasn't too big (did consider Ducati Multistrada Enduro) . Have to say, I absolutely love the GSA. Went out in the woods and hills on gravel and dirt roads, outpaced a guy on a 2016 Africa Twin with DSG. That was my first time on gravel/dirt with this bike.
The AT owner simply had to admit the GSA is better for almost everything. If anyone thinks the Rallye is a big extreme, go for a GSA. But make sure to check boxes on all the packages. I got the QuickShift and dynamic ESA (absolutely love that too) and all the the other stuff. Don't know how it behaves without them but they're all very very useful :)

+Knut Meyn Yes I love the GSA (and the Africa Twin!).....but the GSA is the one I would have if money were no object (and KTM didn't exist)...

I think you are confusing the GS Rallye with the GS Rallye X. The Rallye X come standard with the small screen, knobbly tyres and one piece seat. You are riding the GS Rallye, which has the two seat option and standard screen and Anakee3 tyres, so the features you mentioned that the dealer has 'swapped over' are actually standard on that model (Rallye, not Rallye X). Both the Rallye models also come with the same suspension as the GSA, 20mm more travel and a bit stiffer. Love your videos, you do set the benchmark for quality reviews. Keep up the great work.

+OZ Rider I think the models may differ slightly in Europe - thanks for watching, all the best - TMF

    • @eubikedude
      @eubikedude 7 років тому +2

They may not call it the "X" over here, but I think he is right, that it's a "choice of packages" that determines the screen/seat, so they may not have been swapped and were ordered with that config?
I think you can even get the Rallye look (blue frame and such) without the harder/longer suspension, i.e. a std. GS that looks like a Rallye if you don't add a particular package.
There has apparently been a lot of forum moaning about how difficult it is to know what you are getting with all the different Rallye packages.

KTM's configurator is pretty good mind you.

I believe it's the same in the UK as it is in Canada, where you can order the bike with a passenger kit that swaps out the bench seat and the short windscreen with the regular screen and seat and adds a centre stand.

Deliberated long and hard over this but finally placed an order for my new GS Rallye this week at Bahnstormer Alton. Thanks goes to TMF for the brilliant reviews. What a bike, coming from a KTM 690 Supermoto, within 200 yards I felt completely at home on the GS, gobsmacked at how great it rides. If you haven't riden one, GO DO IT !!
Matt at Bahnstormers is a top bloke, had a fantastic sales experience better than any other manufacturer/dealer that I've used in the past. Can't wait for delivery.

Thanks for these videos (this one and the others regarding the GSA and the choice between the two). I added this model to my garage recently and love it. As you mentioned, it is very well balanced and, with the two piece seat, it is easy to get your feet on the ground. The engine, fueling, and transmission are all excellent, and the overall build quality is first rate. I did try the competition, and found that the 37 years of development and evolution of the GS series makes it a much more refined, sophisticated machine. I enjoy your travel videos as well, and hope to put a lot of miles on this beast in coming years.

I’ve recently bought one of these beauties and I’m loving every second of it. Only flaw I’d say is sometimes it is quite hard to find the neutral, but that lovely engine and the overall impeccable balance make up for everything. Can’t see myself selling this ever!
Thanks for your review MissendenFlyer (what’s a Missenden?), it is very informative and to the point as the rest of your production.

@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks, it must have sounded like a pretty dumb question!
Anyway I mostly agree with what you say halfway through the review: this GS is cool but mostly because of graphics, the tiny windshield and the bench seat are definitely not mandatory even if one intends to take it on something more serious than gravel roads. That’s only my experience anyway, I love it nonetheless!

Hi I have always loved the R1200GS bikes but have never had an opportunity to try one. What I have done is to watch all your GS videos and the ordered a new one from my BMW dealer. So yesterday I got a brand new blue R1200GS Rally and I must say its a fantastic motorcycle. Very comfortable, fast enough and really good looking. Actually the first bike I really have to read the manual to get the best of it. Thanks :)

I've bought a lapel mic but all i get is unbearable wind noise. Just ordered a dead cat for it, hope that helps. I'm aiming to go on a bit of a bike tour and would like some decent audio to go with the vid. Your set up is clear as a bell. I can use the bluetooth mic to my phone but the quality is barely passable.

I took that Rallye out, and thought it was quite different to the previous GS. I ended up purchasing an Exclusive and I'm very pleased i did. Key differences for me: the front end redesign has made the bike much quieter; as you mentioned, gearbox and GSAP are very much better; and I also think the bike looks much better. I got one with the 'comfort seat, low'. I'm a couple of inches taller than you, but still felt insecure occasionally, and indeed fell off once when fully loaded on a slippery slope.

Huge fan of the 1200 GS, however sometimes what the Germans do makes ZERO sense. They have a frame protector of a few inches of plastic while there is ZERO protection of the Cylinder Heads for this so called "off road" model bike. Yeah BMW, we get it! You want us to pay another $500 to get the Crash Bars on top of the $21K already spent. It is all about the Accessory sales, but who will guarantee that I will buy the BMW Crash Bars?

Great review MS. That's the nicest GS so far to my eyes. I am a Tiger owner currently but will pop over the Maidenhead to look at that. Great review. I see lots of comments about the lack of offroad protection, but who would ride this offroad? Get yourself something light and circa 250cc for that. The reason why the bike you tested had 2 step rather than a bench seat was probably because you were riding the Rallye sport, which for most part (other than the spooked wheels, pegs and one or two bits of plastic) is the same as the te exclusive. You can spec it up to get the 20mm suspension like the 'pure' Rallye. I've read that the sport version is for UK only, but don't know if that's correct.

Hi, I own this bike and like it very much. The new 1250 has the nice TFT but upgrading would provide too costly. I also do not have cruise control nor keyless ignition on mine, but can easily live without those. I go light offroading every so often and it is a lot of fun. I put Metzeler Karoo Street tires as the better compromise for my style of riding.

Yes but if you ask a question BMW do come back to you, unlike Kawasaki, the Suzuki dealer didn't want to give a test ride, the local Honda dealer is not a fan on demo bikes either, Ongar Motorcycles will give 30 minutes demo trail (Triumph) were as Cannon BMW give a hour plus plus Jim Aim (KTM) are happy to loan a bike for the same time period, One of my mates (James) said the Yamaha dealer gave him 20 minutes on a MT09 Tracer which just about got him out of town & back, he said the screen on the MT was directing the wind up above the screen & tunneling under his crash helmet creating extra howling within his lid (to which the dealer other riders had reported this). end of the day when you are paying for something which is excess of £10,000 + or for a hobby bit of fun, dealers need us as much as we need them. I have called into BMW Motorrad in Alton, Braintree, Norwich, Peterborough. Preston & York all have given a cup of coffee/tea and made welcome

I like the GS. Not enough to buy one, but did do a half day test ride and thought it made an excellent (if slightly unwieldy) road bike. Although these bikes can go off road, most bikes 'can' go off road. I've even see someone cross the Himalayas on an Hayabusa. The problem I have with the GS and specifically this model, is that it isn't actually that good off-road. No matter what suspension travel or tyres you give it, its weight alone should be enough to put any serious off road thoughts out of your mind. Of course, BMW organise many off-road events and tours to get the message across; It's all just marketing and upselling. Get a standard GS and use the rest towards a proper lightweight (relatively) offroad/Dakar machine!

Good review, very thorough as we have come to expect. I've noticed that a lot of you bike reviews are on quite pricey and expensive bikes or really cheap 125s. The exception being the R3. Is there any plans to do some more middle price bikes? There are a plethora of 250-400 cc bikes such as Vstrom 250, 300 Versys, and the RE Himalayan. Will you be looking to these for future tests, and which are more affordable to us commoners? Cheers

I'm very interested in this bike and have an old style GS plus new RS.
For info, you're reviewing a Rallye Sport. (That brings the higher screen, double seat).. plus the bike has the premium pack which takes it back to full road TE spec (Dynamic ESA, heared grips etc).

Just excellent. I've not been a big fan of the look of the adventure bikes but the Rallye really is a killer good looking bike. On a 2016 T120 right now which I love short of the horrible seat. I could picture owning a GS without any problem. Enjoy the reviews TMF! Keep'em coming. Cheers!

Thank you Allan, is the T120 seat that bad?? I found it OK but then I probably haven'r sat on one as long as you.....no such problems with the GS :0)

I have an over sensitive bum. Probably gonna let the T120 go in 2018 and look at a GS or an RT. Kawasaki Versys 1000 is on my list. Gotta have something the wife will like to ride on the back of but I don't want too much weight in a bike. Again, enjoying your channel and keep up the good work.

Hey +TheMissendenFlyer I am currently in a big search for an ADV/Touring bike , I have narrowed my search to 3 bikes , but the most debate goes between the R1200GS Rallye configured just like the one you drive , and the 1290 Super Adventure S you reviewed a few weeks ago , which one would you choose of the 2 ?
Keep in mind that it will be my only bike and that I would be using it for everything... (everyday use , weekend rides and touring inside and outside the borders)
p.s. I love your videos and the points you make reviewing a bike , covers pretty much everything anyone would like to hear and your opinion is one of the most unbiased I've seen !!! Keep it up !!!!

Man that's nice MissendenFlyer! How do you feel about reading the instruments? I've heard complaints in the past they're kind of hard to read? Before I spend the money for one of these.. Is performing maintenance a pain on these? Changing oil? then less periodic things Like changing the battery or air filter? Or lubing the shaft spline? Sorry for so many questions.. Thanks for you time!

Frame guards and not for a spill, that part of the frame will not come into contact with the road. The guards are there to protect the paint on the frame from boot rub. Ask any Enduro rider. though those ones do not look like a lot of good as they do not cover the whole area.

With the new 1250 out, there are some really good deals on these to be had. After 69,000 kms my 2016 gsa might just get replaced by a low mileage 2017 Rallye considering the dealer is giving me an amazingly good trade-in price.
Incidentally, the gsa is still as perfect as the day it rolled off the manufacturing line.

The "new" GS according to bmw watchers is scheduled for the 2018/2019 with a full TFT screen. Not all BMW riders are enthused about this but it's easier to read than the dials in my opinion, traditional riders still love the dials.

The Triple Black GSA is so boss... also, you can't beat the engineering. I have a Kawasaki Concours 1400 so, the XR would be close to what I have. As for KTM, love the engine but not the look. Plus regarding panniers, gps and etc. the KTM is a little yard sale where everything for the BMW is designed for the bike.

Interestingly enough I found it to be nearly as easy to get my feet down with the rally seat as with the standard one. I also found it easier to move around on. But I guess the GS is not meant to be ridden in a hang off manner so. The automatic leveling worked nicely for me, tested that with the girlfriend on the back of the bike. It's not that it actually goes up, it just makes sure the suspension stays in the optimal position. At ~170 I'm shorter than you and didn't have an issue. If I'd go for a touring bike it'd probably be the new GS. :)

This bike is for people who want more off road use and a little on road. It is not just for styling and posing. Buy the normal GS if yoyr mostly on road user. This model is better off road than the adventure which is too big for real off roading, this model is to compete against the R models from ktm which were not as good all round bime but always better off road.

Imagine upper body is draft free due to fair size screen, hands are fine with handguards but wonder what is the story with legs? Had RT before and leegs were draft free also.
