    Being in Ohio myself I planted sweet cherry 100 tomato’s, early girl hybrid tomato’s, jalapeños, bell peppers, banana peppers, cucumbers, squash, strawberries all those transplanted the first day of June along with direct sowing cantaloupe, and green beans!

    I have 40° C sometimes in the summer, and 30°+ is very common now. There are plenty of lettuces that grow in this climate, you need to look towards Spanish, Italian and Southern French varieties. One that's very heat resistant, is Batavia Maravilla De Verano, it will not bolt even in full sun in summer. On the French side, you have ‘Rougette de Montpellier', 'Grosse Blonde Paresseuse', ‘Chicon des Charentes’. I usually plant them between tomato plants, but seriously, they will even work in full sun. And of course you also have chicories for the summer, like Sucrine, Frisée Pancalière etc... Those are sown in June usually, and harvested in late Summer. The advantage of planting them between tomatoes is that they will not only benefit from the shade, but also from the water you give your tomatoes. I almost never do rows of lettuces.

      This is awesome!! Thank you so much for these variety suggestions... I can't wait to track down these varieties. Love the idea of growing them in between the tomatoes too. Thank you, Nicolas!

    I'm in zone 9B, but we're still hovering in the 60s right now, and I've had to give up on starting my cucs and squashes outside. I broke out my heat mat. In May/June! This is craziness, haha! I love your videos. Knowing I have a much later frost date than you do, and seeing that you would just now be planting and sowing the seeds I'm starting right now on my heat mat gives me hope of a sucessful warm-weather season despite this weird weather!

      @@GrowfullywithJenna This is definitely not typical! It's been raining today! Not hard, but definitely enough to get soaked into the ground, which is wonderful. Can't complain though, as it's a nice change from the many many years of drought. Hopefully we'll end up balancing out this cold first half of the year with longer summer, with warmth going into October.

    Another Great video; Well this was the year that I decided to go all in on building beds in our garden and what a project that was. Also to aggravate the project we have had one of the wettest and coolest springs in history. The farmers around us are even getting some fields planted. Anyway around the first of June we started direct seeding our garden. We planted peas, pole beans and bush beans, radishes, dill, spinach, onions and carrots. We also planted out our tomatoes plants and put in some raspberries and blackberries. Then the rains came again and soak everything to the core. then we had a trip planned and left for the 7th and came back on the 11th because we got tired of camping in the rain! So we just finished planting yesterday. We were finally able to start planting again on the 15th and planted WW sweet onion sets, replanted all our beans and peas (I think it was just too wet and cold for direct planting) ground was too cold. I am still tilling the corn and potato areas and they are still really to wet to till but we got them in the ground yesterday finally. We also direct planting several types of squash and watermelon yesterday. It is kind of do or die time here in North Central Idaho zone 6b. I am starting a modified no-till garden using my own compost and worm casting so its an adventure in change for us after 50 years or row gardening. Thanks for all your videos I look forward to watching them all the time!

    I live in Southern Ontario, I think we're about zone 6a-6b. I planted some radishes on June 1st that I'm harvesting now. The Garden Giant radishes just went to seed and got pithy with minimal root development, but the French Breakfast radishes are just as good as they were a month ago, maybe even better (our first crop of radishes wasn't as good because late April/early May was quite cool so they took longer than ideal to mature).

    As another commenter said, so good to see that sub count climbing. Way to stick with it. Living dangerously with those castor beans, very cool looking plant. Here in 4a I just keep shoving stuff in the ground. I do a lot of succession planting too. So dry here, been a bit tough, but I'm a glutton for punishment. Wrong year to expand the garden and add another orchard. I must have about 14000 sq ft of garden to keep watered. My poor well is working over time. Working sun up to sundown. Your garden is looking great. Good work. Take care.

Cause it was soon dry here and we just got some rain too boost the change over I put grass clippings around all my plants too keep the moisture in. And once a week I water with comfrey tea. And transplanted pumpkin and cucumbers a week ago. And pole beans a few weeks before. It's was hard this year we had a frost in May. Witch we haven't had before. I've learn too start sew in garden with clear gallon jugs over like a mini green house but with the kids on till no chance of frost then lids come off till night time and go back on.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Benjamin- Wild Violet will have plenty of time to mature before your first frost. The only trick with late planting corn is that you often have to water it more than early planted corn. I've found this to be the case in my own garden. Because our rainfall drastically tapers off after mid-June, I am out there with a sprinkler a LOT more (drip irrigation would be ideal, but I haven't set mine up yet). Hope this helps!

    As always this was an incredibly helpful video for us who are gardening in the same zone as you. Thank you for the timely information. As for what I'm planting... I decided to go ahead and try some cucumbers because my Armenian cucumbers have struggled. It seems to me they're too cool because I have trouble with a lot of melons also. They just don't thrive for me yet and I had no trouble with melons when I lived in zone 7. So I went ahead and started some cucumbers in soil blocks and those went into the ground yesterday and more will go in tomorrow. Also some additional cantaloupe and watermelon again from my own seed starts. And another Armenian cucumber on the off chance that maybe their growth was just stunted due to the cool May. I have also put in more bush beans where I pulled out my spinach just last week. And I need to pull out some of my lettuce and put in some more beans there. And I planted a whole bunch of Ohio natives because a nursery here was having a sale and I could get plants for $2 and they were all Ohio natives. So I put in things like echinacea and heliopsis and wild bergamot and lots more. I even found a spot for Jerusalem artichoke. I am so excited about those but I still need to go out and buy some sort of inground barrier so that it doesn't take over the rest of my yard. LOL

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому +2

      I’m glad you found it helpful, Chere’! It was definitely an unusual May, much cooler than normal- it’s very likely that your melons and Armenian cukes will do better now that it’s warmed up a bit! What a deal on those native plants- very cool! And I love my Jerusalem artichokes- but you’re right to put in a barrier of some sort, they definitely like to spread. Have fun planting and best of luck with all the warm weather crops!

My determinates all have square tomato cages anyways- I wrap lightweight insect fabric around the cages about 1/2 way up and clothespin them in place. Seems to be doing the trick so far. Peppers need more warmth than mose any seeds to start and temperature 60 degrees ground temperature also if you put them out to early they get stunted and don't come out of it but stay stunted.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna

      They may just need a bit more time. My peppers are slower to take off than almost anything else in the garden, but they always seem to catch up my mid-season. As an example, I transplanted my peppers & tomatoes at the same time-- the tomatoes have put on a foot of growth already, the peppers have barely moved!! Other than that, just ensure they are getting enough water, especially while getting established.

      I was wondering the same thing! My peppers are so slow. I over wintered my jalapenos, but I indoor sowed hot cherry peppers & they are still so small. I put them out the same time as my tomatoes. Thanks for asking the question! Now I know it's not just me 😄

      @@mexicas6637 to give you an idea- we just got a nice rain and I swear my tomatoes shot up a foot and are now 3-4' tall. My peppers are still only about 12-18" tall. They'll get there eventually!

    Take in to consideration how much sun your garden gets. My garden doesn’t get all day sun. My garden grows slower than it should.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому +1

      Yes-- this is always a very important consideration! The days to maturity that you see listed on seed packets are assuming full sun conditions. Thanks for pointing this out.

    Hi Jenna, I might have missed it but what about another round of regular potatoes? Would those grow a good crop if started now?

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому +1

      That's a great question. I typically don't plant potatoes any later than mid-May, I've just not had good results when I do. Potatoes like cool temps, and will actually stop forming tubers when the temps are too high (I've heard soil temps of 75- 80F-- not sure how accurate that is). I've long wanted to experiment with ways to produce potatoes going into the fall, but have not had a chance to yet. Perhaps if you have a way to keep your soil cooler, perhaps timing the planting so that tuber formation (at about 60 days) is occurring as you're going into the cooler temps of fall... I have nothing definitive to offer you, but if you decided to play around with planting, I'd love to hear how it goes for you!

    • @CJ_536
      @CJ_536 3 роки тому +2

      I am doing just that experiment right now. I've never grown potatoes before and knew they were a crop that preferred cool roots but I was late getting around to it and it was the first week in June. So my experiment is actually to plant them in my raised bed for blueberries which is in an area that gets afternoon shade. It's maybe a 20-in tall raised bed that has had the soil treated to be more acidic underneath of it and then I also used a peat moss heavy mix of soil because it was all for the blueberries. And since potatoes like acidity I thought that was the best spot for them. And I am hopeful because the afternoon shade from this big tree keeps a little cooler in that part of my yard than everywhere else in my veggie garden. So I don't know if I'll actually get tubers because they're only maybe 4 in tall now. But I'm experimenting and we will see.

    When do you start fall seeds like cabbage again ? I'm in cleveland area.

      I typically start all my brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, kohlrabi etc.) indoors from seed the first week of July and transplant out to the garden mid-August.

    I live in zone five, probably not much of a difference in zone six. What method of seed starting do you like the best, jiffy Peat pellets, bio sponges, or seed starting mix.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому +2

      Probably not- especially since I've got a later spring & earlier fall frost date than many other Zone 6 locales. Regarding seed starting- my go to's are still the bio sponges & ProMix seed starting mix (if I'm too lazy to make my own). I strongly dislike peat pellets!

    No lettuce? Really. I'm in Cleveland (zone 5, but global warming now has us creeping towards zone 6 per our local Ohio State extension office). I grow lettuce all summer long, and sow new starts on a window sill on the 1st and 15th of every month, and then letting them grow for a couple weeks outside on a shady picnic table. My last sowing is on September 15th. So when a lettuce plant in the garden bolts, we always have several replacements ready to go. I even "break" some gardening rules, often succession cropping lettuce in the same garden spot 2 or 3 times a year, albeit never two years in a row. This has kept us in fresh-harvested lettuce from May through November for decades.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому

      No lettuce. While I realize it’s doable, it’s too much work for me to try to grow it during the heat of the summer. So I grow it through the spring/early summer and then again for a fall harvest and that works out pretty well for me.

      @@GrowfullywithJenna No worries. I have a very small garden compared to yours so grow mostly greens-kale, mustard, chard-peppers, tomatoes, bunching onions, leeks, cukes, zucchini, beans, and lettuce. In short, the most expensive veggies on the shelves. And since our kids are in college and spend summers away from home,. we're only growing for 2 so it's easy for us.
