I agree completely with your review. I saw the movie last friday in my country. The movie is EXCELLENT. I went to the theater with no expectations because I didn't know what to expect from an animated film (besides Bakshi's work from 1978) and... at one point of the movie I forgot I was watching an anime. You can tell how much love and work was put into this, and the participation of the original LOTR team (Phillipa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, Miranda Otto) is EVIDENT in the quality of the result.
Also, great casting (Brian Cox is a perfect Helm). And the music is AMAZING, which is something that really worried me because of what an important part it has in experiencing the movies.
Can't wait to see it again ❤ .

Kenji Kamiyama worked with what’s given to him for this movie so shills blaming the anime medium for the movie’s lackluster performance is not warranted. He did as a director to bring the story to life. If I’m not mistaken and this is just my observation, the English trailer’s focus on Hera did not help remove the disgust for girlbosses. The Japanese trailer is different, it showed Hera, Helm and other stuff, it never focused solely on Hera.
Anyways, I will reserve my judgement when I get to watch it. I have my reservations but I’ll still give it the benefit of the doubt.

    • @mellonheads

Yes you're right, the Japanese trailer was much better and imo, truer to how the film turned out! I agree that I am saddened by the amount of people that said that they have 0 interest in this just because it is an anime (even though it isn't my favourite).

When you say that a Middle-earth story has never been told in an anime style before, you are...mostly...correct, but not entirely. The Rankin/Bass television adaptations of The Hobbit and The Return of the King were animated by the Japanese studio Top Craft in a sort of pseudo-anime style.
If Helm's daughter wasn't made the viewpoint character, how would you have handled it? No one else can be present for all of the key events of the film without making significant changes. The other option is to have multiple points of view.
I do wonder about the logistics of the Dunlendings' Southron allies transporting Mumakil to Rohan. It can't be easy to load an Oliphaunt onto a ship.

    • @mellonheads
      @mellonheads  16 днів тому +3

Yes I'm well aware! I meant that it has never been done in the medium of (typical) anime style because I certainly wouldn't class those movies as that.
Tbh I hadn't thought about how I would have handled the story otherwise because the obvious answer to most people was "in the perspective of Helm" but I think this way gives more credence to the horror and terror of what happened later in Helms life. The story doesn't necessarily have to be from anyone's perspective though so I still would have had Helm as the central character.
Did you assume they came by ship? I assumed they travelled up through mordor and along the edges of Gondor but perhaps you're right. Weta Workshop confirmed that these aren't the same Mumakil species that we see in ROTK however, but that they are a pseudo species that is much smaller so perhaps they could have sailed over?

@@mellonheads Easterlings were already harassing Rohan on its eastern borders, that's what gave the Dunlendings their opportunity to start an uprising. But the Dunlendings were actually allied with enemies from the South that landed at the mouths of the Isen and Lefnui rivers. So, yes, the Southron allies arrived by ship.
The problem with Helm is that he cannot remain the central character throughout the entire film (for obvious reasons). The same can be said for his sons and his nephew Frealaf.

Only a guy would say a female character is unnecessary or should be a secondary character. 😄There are also female Tolkien fans, you know. Surely that's more Tolkienesque to expand characters and stories left outlined than to distort characters and established lore (Yeah, I mean Rings of Power). Professor Tolkien said so himself in one of his letters. Animation, live action, I just want to see different artistic styles. I'm hopeful about this one, just because of the people involved.

You've got it all wrong! It's nothing to do with gender. If the story had an unnamed nephew of Helm and the film had him as the central character, it would be the same issue. Yes there are plenty of brilliant female characters in Tolkiens works and I'd prefer them to be the heroines of their own stories but a lot of fans didn't want Helm's story to focus on anyone other than him. Now luckily, as per my review, I suggest that they actually spun it in a nice way and made Hera the audience perspective and I think it worked to some degree but you can't ignore the fact that the main character isn't even named in the book. Imagine if the Hobbit's main character was an unnamed Hobbit that was friends with Bilbo?

@@mellonheads True, I haven't seen the movie yet but, since the proposal of marriage to Helm's daughter is the start of it all it seems a wasted opportunity not to show her point of view (much like Helen is blamed for the war in Troy and nobody cares about what she thinks). In these stories women are used as mere plot points in men's wars and I'm sure I'm not the only one annoyed by that. I'm not making it about genre, but the fact the story ignores her. It's not the case of some random Bilbo's friend point of view, it's the case of here we have a woman who is the catalyst for Helm's story and yet she's nameless and dismissed as an insignificant incident because, of course, story is written by men, even in Rohan. What do you think Eowyn would say about that? What better female co-protagonist than one from a culture that allows shield maidens in the battlefield? I truly believe that it is these kind of characters, obscure and living in the fringe of the great stories, (and not just female characters) are the ones Tolkien gave "permission" to expande by other artists and that is what I'm curious to see.

@@rosedust-e1o Well your issue lies with Tolkien if you didn't like the way he writes Helms story. I think you're right in one sense that it is a great character to expand upon in her own movie but maybe not in Helm's movie. @mellonheads I enjoyed your balanced take on the movie. I do get the alliteration Helm -> Hera as that is the tradition of children's names sounding like their parents. Though she would have a name more like her mother's (who is also unnamed) if they were going for female names, perhaps Heorid, Hagyth, Heorwyn Hawyn, or some such.
I get it - nit picky, etc, but having grown up on mythology in books and tv, especially Greek and roman, Hera is firmly not a Rohirrim name and foreign to it. To me, that is lazy writing as it links in to pop culture rather than the built world of middle earth. Even worse when they try and big up their production by attaching it to the writings of a man who was as much as possible precise in his own texts. Yes, I'm a purist, but it is what it is. Also, the plethora of lazy cash grab movies and tv series over the past few years just put me off.
I'm glad you enjoyed the movie as much as you did with your own caveats, but money and time are what they ask of me, and I am not enthused in the slightest to give it. If it comes onto netflix, perhaps.

It isn't crazy to say this movie is woke. It absolutely is. None of Tolkien's philosophies or moral beliefs are represented in this movie. His themes are always inspired by Christian ideas and Christian morals. The idea of houses coming together and marriage and family being the force that stands against evil. And friendships between unlikely allies, and the like. None of these principles are understood or represented in the movie. It has a strong message of feminism, and aversion to marriage and family. Basically the opposite of the philosophy of the author.

Having a strong female lead isn't intrinsically bad, but this movie doesn't exist in a vacuum. For the past 6 years or more, Hollywood has been pushing this trope, sometimes successfully and others not so much. Specifically when it comes to Lord Of The Rings, and after The Rings Of Power, a lot fans wish for a movie where the world of Tolkien doesn't unnecessarily include a piece that reminds them of the current ideological agenda of some feminist. It feels as if most corporations are socially progressive often when it's on a well recognized IP, but rarely so when it's time to bet for your values on a new original product. Almost as if it was primarily money, and not principles that drive their decision making...
