- A traditional South African song, sung in Afrikaans and accompanied on the piano accordion.
The precise origins of this song are unknown, but it was either created during the first or second Boer war in South Africa, which was fought against British troops around the end of the 19th century. The tune and concept of Sarie Marais is most probably inspired on the 1865 American civil war song Sweet Ellie Rhee.

Kenneth McKellar used to sing this. His version had more of a classical sound. I love this version.
The accordion in this sounds a lot like Louisiana Cajun music.
Sarie was a real person, daughter of Jacob Mare (Wikipedia) and the words by Jacobus Toerien (Wikipedia).

@@bastiaanvannijlen9244 I only bought mine this year and still can't play the bass accompaniment and melody together. Another instrument I need to put the practice hours into!
@@DanielKellyFolkMusic that's it, it's all practice. I played the chromatic button accordion when I was in primary school and then left it aside for years and years until I picked it up again recently, my mother and grandfather both played it so it's mostly family tradition and nostalgia to me.
Best of luck with your accordion, nothing better and more fun than 3 chord folk and country songs to get both hands going!
