I think it depends on how you want to build yours. Just have to pick out and price your upgrades. And then bounce that against the two models to see which is cheaper. For me I would get the XTP over the base model because it already has pretty much all the upgrades I want. Plus you have a higher blue book value and painted plastics. But this is the first time I have found that to be my case, usually I come out better to get the base and build it myself. Another great video guys. Keep em coming.

I've been looking at getting a commander recently and weighing the options just like you mentioned. Personally for the money, the DPS is perfect for me just for the reasons you mentioned. Even after I built a model on the CanAm website, it still came out to a very reasonable price. Keep up with the awesome reviews and videos, its helping out a lot.

Nice to see reviews of the “cheaper” models. Like any SXS is cheaper. The small things like the door latches and such are important. Makes the machine easy to use every day. The belt storage is a great idea. Wish it could hold more like tools.

Great video. I would personally buy the DPS over the XT for 3 main reasons.
    1. it's more affordable, you can drive it as is to you can afford it or have time for upgrades.
    2. You have the ability to upgrade to whatever you want for accessories instead of being stuck with factory options.
    3. If you do want the accessories from the xp or limited, you can usually find take offs on kijiji, Facebook market place, etc. And usually you can find it for a fraction of the price of buying through can am. Looking forward to the future commander testing video. Sounds like it was used as it was meant to be used.

Hey Luke, Jay here from New Brunswick Canada. I feel its certainly smarter to buy the lower end model and buy the extras afterwards. You made such a great point with that and telling the viewers your honest opinions is respectable. Brand Loyal channels want to push the biggest and best but rarely showcase the potential of the lower end models. There are so many aftermarket parts available now a days that its perfect for someone on a budget to slowly upgrade their machines rather then having a huge payment. Can't wait to see the ride video and the final review. Been a huge fan of your channel for many years and value your opinions greatly. Keep up the great work!!!

Either model would be great to have. The DPS has more room to grow and has all the potential of it's older brothers. Note that that cargo box has a pin on the hydraulic shock to remove for better access for maintenance it opens to 90 degrees. The thing I like about the new Commander is all the factory options for accessories from windshield to cargo bins. They fix perfectly and they have almost everything you want to add to make it your own. I know I own a new XT-P and I love it.

Smarter wise, get the XT if going to just add the same accessories anyways. If not needing the XT upgrades, or going to hit up the aftermarket rather than OEM accessories, go with this base model. How is the in cab noise level vs a Defender HD8? Also, please address the driveline vibration/rattle noise so many are complaining about already. Maybe reach out to BRP and see what they have to say. Even after BRP’s bandaid to correct this, people are still saying the rattle noise is there. It’s the only reason I am hesitant to order one. Awesome review and content! Keep it coming!

I have the new XTP Max, very smooth and quiet inside. I love how I can talk to the wife and kids easily while riding. The mid range is also very great, riding with my moms may sport max she's at least 500 rpm higher riding same speed and much louder inside. The sport has a higher max rpm and I'm waiting for Dalton to release a kit as I don't want to lose my mid range or bottom end but the commander has a lot less top end. Only gripe on my xtp is the 8 ply tires are stiff and heavy but I don't have to worry about flats at least, as mentioned clutching can be fixed. Good advice ofor buying DPS. If you can't afford the XTP then DPS is fine if you upgrade tires. Riding normal trails the stock tires are OK, but in mud and rock you'll want 30s for sure.

I've had a 2014 Commander Max, and currently have a KRX-1000 and an RMAX-2 LE. (I went with the RMAX cause I couldn't FIND a new Commander XTP! Stoopid pandemic!) I am not one who enjoys working on my vehicle, or installing anything beyond basic accessories. So, I am big on buying things from the dealer with all that stuff already installed, or having them do it. The fun for me is in the ride, not the maintenance!

I have on order an xt over the dps for a few reasons. 1 winch, roof, bumpers, accent lights. 2 arched A arms, more travel. 3 painted plastics. Also believe resale value maybe more. I had a 2020 commander dps and loved it but I do know what it in tails to add accessories. Most people would rather have it come with as much as possible, to spend more time on the trail than in the garage installing parts.

In Canada, it’s a $3500 difference between the DPS and XT. If you can live with the green colour, the DPS is the way to go, that way you can add the type of roof you want, add the winch you want, add the tires you want and you can do it little by little without breaking the bank.

As always a very informative video. I would personally opt for the XT or XT-P in this instance. I am dangerous with any sort of tools. In my case having the winch and brush guard as well as the roof already in place would be far preferable. For someone more in tune with all things mechanical the basic model might be the way to go. Another factor could be the cost of tires, rims, roof, etc as compared to the price difference between the basic and various upgrade models. It’s certainly good to have options though.

Do I just want ride it as soon as I can get it, not have to spend time buying, ordering the extra accessories, putting them on and are they actually available or on backorder. But, if you enjoy the extra work installing the accessories and maybe just getting a few extras for your SXS, customizing it the way you want.

I personally like the base max dps 1000R model over the XT because of the customization aspect of it. People who love to get creative and "design" their own vehicle can do it without purchasing a vehicle that has options added to it that is added into the sticker price when their only going to have them removed anyway. Great idea to have a base with little to no extras, a XT with some useful options and the fully loaded Limited. Id love for Can-Am to have this model with a optional upgraded motor/transmission as well for those who want to build the power machines.

To me base is the way to go. For one it’s Fairly affordable. And you can make it yours and customize as you go and your budget allows. That’s where all the fun is. I bought a base model 22’ defender max Hd7 back in April and it’s all the machine an average Joe would ever need. Works perfectly for my family of 5. I highly recommend you check out the new HD7 engine if you guys haven’t. It is with out question the smoothest and quietest single cylinder Engine I’ve ever been around. And the new P drive clutch is really smooth as well. Good video man. Love these new commanders as well.

DPS vs XT for $1800 difference for the 2 seater and $2600 for the 4 seat, If it was me and I was looking at a 2 seater and wanted a color and winch it's more economical to get the XT, the 4 seater that's harder to justify as the XT only comes in one color so it would come down to if you like all the differences. I personally think the 4 seater makes less economical as I am sure you can customize things better, like better/higher capacity winch and possible a roof with speakers. With all this said, i you just want to get in it and go I'd budget for the XT as that will get you everything you need on basic trails off the show room floor.

Luke, if a customer is planning on installing their own accessories themselves then it make more sense for them to be able to pick and choose their parts within their budget So go with the DPS. However if we factor in shop install time of the accessories then it will bring the price up beyond expectations of just costing out the accessories.
If you don't want to spend time, or simply don't know how to install your goodies, then let the guys at BRP do it from factory and purchase the XT

My thought process was that a person would be adding aftermarket upgrades, not can am upgrades. If you intend to install the SAME parts that come on the XT, they it is, by far, the better option. But, if you intend to add a non can am roof and non can am wheels/tires etc, better to get the base model.

Cool, they are taking advantage of the sport platform. The doors and interior seal the outside dust and mud outside. Easy belt access. Hydraulic lifters mean it never needs valve adjustments. Seats are removed with no tools. Huge dash storage.
Is there a performance difference with the XT. Maybe they put the sport 75 hp in it.

I own a 2022Commander XT700. The reason I got the XT is exactly as you stated. A new set of tires, wheels, a winch, a roof and the bumper are a bargain if you are happy with these items. I just want to ride, not work on it so perfect for me.

  • @JohnGreyman

Buy the dps and upgrade it. Simply because you can add options that area not available stock and most of the time cheaper than the dealership wants to charge. Ive been looking at the hd10. Went into the dealership. Has a sticker on it for 21995, so I ask what the out the door is. Guy has to take my email and send it over. Next day he sends me a purchase price for 36k. Almost 15k in crap charges. Ummmm no. So I will find a slightly used one (6 seater) and do the upgrades after market. By the way, 36k is the otd cash price. Who knows what it would have been if I wanted to finance it. The front brush guard is a must for me with a wench. Thats how I plan to load amd unload. Im in AZ but if you have a line on what im looking for, feel free to reach out. I dont mind a road trip. Im sure when the economy tanks right before or after Christmas these will be much more affordable.

You said for Same people those vehecles are not affordable wich is right and if you wayt a long time auntill you can afford a vehecle like that you'd want it to be perfect für you and maybe want to add your own stuff anyway but if you buy the xt Model instead you'd maybe leave it like that because you now can't afford the aftermarket stuff anymore.
