Even if you don't get the job for the plumber you could always ask if there other departments that need staffing like if they do excavation work or water damage, I wasn't the smartest guy but I started In water restoration and studied and worked up to a crew leader and am now a plumber and trying to also hydrojet. Plumbing is great honest work and doing your checks prevents call backs and complaints.
Just got hired as an apprentice at my first interview. He even gave me an extra dollar an hour just because I came in clean cut. Thank you Roger for all the help.
@@ToxicPandaMD he asked me what I knew about plumbing and if I knew the different kind of fittings and types of pipe we work with, I was honest and said I didn’t know any plumbing. If I had my apprenticeship card, I didn’t, and if I was able to get it. Those where the two biggest questions. My recommendation is not to lie about what you know, because the will expect that from you on the field and if you don’t know what you say you know they will cut you. Also as I said I showed up presentable with, freshly shaven and nice clothes, collared shirt and nice pair of jeans. No need to go full suit and tie. Best of luck to you, I’m praying it goes well.
Roger, I can tell you’re a man of integrity. I have watched a few of your videos now and they have been a tremendous resource for me. I’m looking to join a union and learn a trade (either electrician or plumber) in the next year. Currently running my own woodworking business, working on a farm, and finishing up high school at the age of 18. I’ve done lots of miscellaneous work from concrete to roofing to kitchen cabinets. I love working with my hands and don’t mind working hard or getting dirty. I will continue to watch and learn. Keep up the great work sir!
Awesome info...I agree, have a few questions before the meeting. Take notes!! I always ask "Is there something that you do/do not like about my interview?" Because as you mentioned, you could tip the scale in your favor because you let them know you are trying to get that certification or studying for something in particular. I've even done interviews and can't believe how many people say, hardly pay attention or say they have no questions!
When I went in for my interview. He asked me, "What makes you think puts you over the other people I'm interviewing today?" I responded with, "Well I don't know them personally, but I have the driver to do this over most people in my age group." I had gotten to the interview 30 minutes early, and I had the furthest to drive... I got the job and am now one of the hardest working apprentices.
3rd year union plumber apprentice ans gas tech here. Man, what a great video - likely my favorite one yet, and I've watched at least a dozen of yours so far. I always research a company and try to mention something specific about the owner/interviewer/company that only a decent amount of research would yield. I do this not only to get more info on the company, but to illustrate the time I took to do so. I also see how past/present staff review them, which weeds out some of them before I even apply. While I've asked some of the questions you'd mentioned, there were many I did not and your question about why they may not hire you was a great tip. I'll definitely use all your tips in the future.
This video really helped me nail a plumbing interview. Thank you for all the advice and being that wealth of knowledge that puts me ahead of the other apprentices.
I literally have a interview later today. Thanks for your thoughts on the subject! I now have a few more things I fell I can ask that will make them more interested in hiring me.
Roger I wanted to thank you so much for being inspirational, positive, showing me a passion and a great career. Your videos helped me more than i can put into words. I nailed my interview last week with a good resume and alot of passion. I'm looking forward to getting a career going and becoming something more than a maintenance assistant. Thank you again.
I went and interviewed with an open shop residential new construction company today and asked them all the questions you mentioned and they offered me a job on the spot
Damn, Roger. Arguably, you are a great mentor… In addition to your incredible professionalism in the trade! Thank you for making this video! As always, great work! 💯%
I'm applying to the Union I'm a 3rd year apprentice, and trying hard to move to that and get an actual plumbing education. Is there tips for the interview in general? Should I get a hair cut and beard trim? Would my normal clean work attire ok? What are normal questions asked at the interview? Thank you to all who can help out
Is it a good idea to ask about what to wear/bring the first day? Or is that the wrong time. It would be good to know if a job requires me to buy tools or safety equipment that I don't already own.
Interviewer: We typically look for people with a strong attitude. Me: Violently flips table and walks out. Wife: How was the interview? Me: Pretty sure I got the job. Wife: You flipped the table again didn't you...
In my option YES it does change because you are going to a interview for/from the Union. Over a career with the Union you will Probably work for several different companies. Usually the interview your going to doesn’t have business owners on the Board of Trustees. You want to impress them on why YOU are going to be a good Union plumber.
I watched this video before going into my interview, and I'm so happy that I did. I was a little concerned, because they want me to start as "pre-apprentice" before offering a position, and I might have someone else in there to compete against for the apprenticeship. Is this common in trades? I really want to be a plumber, but I don't know alot about plumbing and I really dont like the idea of competition.
How did it go? What were you applying for (service, new construction. Residential or commercial?) What’s your background? Where in the country are you? As a plumber, I’m curious. And roger would probably like to know as well
Thank you for the video Roger. I'm currently going to school for plumbing. Is there any advice/training I could be doing that I could do to increase my odds of getting an apprenticeship? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you and have a blessed day.
Robert Staton check into the military, I learned plumbing in the Air Force and when I got out I had documentation and reference letters from my supervisors which enabled me to take my masters license test in 1994....been a service and repair plumber ever since.
I was under a house a few weeks ago changing all the cast ironoipes over to PVC the crawl space was tight but it had a gully dug out so I could stand up. I felt something on my neck. I thought it was a spider web but was a cat.
This is a lot of assuming they will hire me and that they actually do something as a company other than wasting my time. I think we don't have those. At least I never seen any. I can't care for company that does nothing useful.
Like this if you want to CRUSH your plumbing job interview
Question for you Roger, what is your company's time frame for a green plumber to truck ready with no supervision?
@@joshneal5355 about 2 years…
I was just hired on the spot today for my first plumbing apprentice job! Thanks for all the helpful advise Roger.
I have an interview coming up, any tips you might have and we’re there any questions that we’re quite difficult to answer that I should keep in mind.
I would write down some of the questions you see in the video and bring them with you. That’s what I did anyway.
How is the apprenticeship going?
How’s it been so far?
How is it going now? Pros and cons? And regrets? Things u wish u would’ve known?
I wrote down most of these and ended up asking 3 of them and got hired on the spot. These are absolutely amazing questions.

This is an extremely killer video for interviews. If I had asked these, I could have skipped my first company.
