  • This is in India, where the calf had fallen into a 15 meter ditch on a tea plantation and its herd must have abandoned it after trying unsuccessfully to retrieve it. It was being raised at a wildlife rehabilitation center that has successfully reintroduced many elephants to the wild.

      +Princess Wild Child You're not stable footing, so horses don't like to step on you, it's a great way to injure themselves falling down. Elephants are the same way, that's why they don't like mice, they don't want to step on them.

    • @SanityLapse
      @SanityLapse 8 років тому +76

      Yes, it's true that it's because of stable footing...not because they don't want to hurt you. Have you ever stepped on a cat before? Sure, you don't want to hurt the cat, but look at things in a more practical way; it makes you lose balance.

      I'm not sure what the equivalent human developmental stage would be, but I think so. I've seen babies who can't quite walk yet carefully examine dogs and cats in a similar manner. Though usually less gently, that's definitely an elephant trait.

      It really is remarkable, the elephant’s awareness of itself vs other creatures. I’m not sure how old this baby is, but you’re right that that is a fairly advanced stage of human child development. The notions of self, difference and separateness are not easily acquired by any animal, at any stage. Very few species have shown conclusive proof they have mastered the concepts. If that is indeed what this little elephant is discovering, it is quite a feat. Though I’d expect nothing less from these creatures. They’ve surprised me time and again, not only with their intelligence but with their almost other-worldly compassion. In their concern for other creatures I would not even hesitate to say they exceed the average human. Dolphins routinely show the same heightened concern as well.

    • @stikibunn
      @stikibunn 5 років тому +82

      @@SneakyCheeseThief Dolphins have the capacity for empathy but also are known to be a-holes. Elephants are more likely to be sweeties. It comes from them being herbivores as well as at the top of the food chain. A grown elephant has no predators but also no prey.

    This video reminded me of when I was a young girl. I volunteered at the children's part of the zoo, in the San Francisco zoo. I helped take care of 2 chimpanzee's, a baby African elephant, and a gibbon. Tina, the elephant, was about the same age as this young elephant, and every bit as "nosy" as this little girl. Since they have to learn to use their trunk, its amazing how gentle they are, even with their clumsy exploring touches. I'm almost 60 years old, and I can still remember Tina's touch as she would wrap her trunk around my arm when I gave her her bottles of milk. Sweet memories!

    Elephants are So so precious. There’s something about them that makes me fall in love with them and of course especially the adorable babies.❤ I hate to see a huge elephant with its tusks missing because that means someone hurt them profoundly. I pray every day that the soldiers in Africa that guard the hippos and the rhinoceros and all the other endangered African animals have successful days where they kill all the poachers. God bless these guardians, and everyone at the elephant sanctuary’s.

      These are asian elephants. Babies are hairy like wolly mammoths, but lose their hair as they age cause of adapting to the warmer climate. They are the closest analog to wolly mammoths we have.

    • @Iguana93
      @Iguana93 7 років тому

      I'm not sure if there are any official theories on this, but I think that having that long trunk is the reason why they are very intelligent. Or it comes hand in hand. If you think about it, only species that have appendages free to manipulate tools and who were forced by some evolutionary niche to learn to use tools, are the ones that are intelligent. You have birds like chickens who can't use their claws too well and are pretty stupid, and then you have intelligent parrots who can use their claws and beaks precisely. Or rodents like bunnies who can't do much with their paws versus rats and mice whose paws are much more nimble and who are considerably smarter. We ourselves have evolved in a niche where we weren't big or strong enough to be safe from predators, so we had to be nimble in grasping branches and running up trees. And so we had reason to become smarter and smarter. :)

    • @Iguana93
      @Iguana93 7 років тому

      Sure, I didn't mean it has to be an absolute rule. Just that there seems to be a connection. It says a lot that our methods of testing animals for intelligence rely a lot on manipulating puzzles and mechanisms. A lot of cetaceans are actually using "tools" to a certain degree. But you're right, the connection may be just a weak one. Nevertheless, I still believe that humans developed as they did because of tools and designing better tools and crafting things. You can still see that as the centerpiece of our civilization. But I may be biased since I'm a design engineer. :D
