That was excellent crew! You're probably already aware of this, but these engineering videos are making you a lot of fans. I love your thought process and your honesty with how it compares with the competition. Makes me build trust in your judgement and products, and justify the price disparity. Keep it coming!
The answer to the parallel rollers question is what I came here for since it's what doomed the SS mill to fail. Sounds like Spike has a much better approach and I like how confident they are that the gap will be exact all the way across. Speed control would be my second concern so nice to see they addressed that in the vid also. Trying to maintain consistent, slow speed with a hand-held drill is a fools errand no matter how well-built the mill itself is. Looking forward to finally having consistent milling!
So looking forward to adding this to my brewery! One question: I know what gap measurement (english) works for my mashing setup. Will the gap adjustments on the Spike Mill come with actual gap measurements shown to help guide the gap settings?
Great video guys! I was originally a SSBrewTech guy, but Spike has won me over in the past 3 or 4 years with your innovative fermenter and boil kettles! Question: Will this mill come with a reference card/document that gives the user a recommended mill setting for a particular type of grain?
Love to hear it! No because each brewer is different. A false bottom vs basket vs mesh bag all can use different mill gaps. We worked with Briess on development and grain size year to year changes so even that can have an effect. We recommend starting with a .035" mill and tweaking from there.
Looks like a good product. I'm a gluten free brewer and I use a lot of millet and rice (unhulled) in my grain bills. I have a hard time with getting the tiny millet grains to "catch" and get pulled through the mill. For some reason, I have the same problem with rice, but more problems with millet. Have you tested this mill on these types of grain? Milling is right now by far my most frustrating (and messy) part of brewing.
@@SpikeBrewing so, making the gap adjustments are as simple as dialing the knob on the front of the unit? No turning is upside down, no tools needed, no measuring gaps? would love to see it in action in another video!
@@bammerc correct. Not sure why that process became the norm but ours will be as easy as turning the dial. We'll continue to put out more content. We'll also be passing around a few demo units so other UA-camr's can give their honest feedback.
Was looking at the accessories section to see if I wanted to pick up anything else for tomorrows pre-sale and saw the cold brew coffee kit. This makes me wonder how would attempting to mill coffee beans on the mill be like? Good idea / bad idea? Like if I wanted to mill coffee into one of the CF's for cold brewing.
How good is the lid for holding the home mill for storage? Can it be placed in a 5 gal bucket upside down with the mill attached for smaller storage footprint?
Just FYI ... the tiny "funnel" shown in this video is considerably smaller than the "dust chute" depicted in the "Spike Mill Table" product description on the Spike Brewing web site. Based on almost 30 years of research, the best solution is for the top of the bucket (preferably a custom Spike Brewing bucket) to be flush with the underside of table / cart top. This completely eliminates grain dust. Grain dust will always escape with a funnel, chute, or whatever you call it.
@@SpikeBrewing What about for those (like me) that did buy during the presale? I'm worse than a kid at Christmas over here waiting to get my hands on this thing! :)

Yes, the gap measurements will be shown from .000" to .080"

We have not but the mill is adjustable from .000" to .080" so it should be able to handle any grain you throw at it!

We haven't tried that but sounds like a fun experiment!

If you wanted to do that we don't see any problems!
@@SpikeBrewing Awesome, couldn't tell how sturdy the lid was and how long it can last supporting the mills weight in an unplanned for manner.
Great question!

Where I can buy the pro versión in Mexico?
What is the release date for those who didn’t catch the presale?
It's looking like Feb of 2024
