I put the disclaimer about not playing these games for a long time, but I have no idea how I forgot the disclaimer, "I'm also not a huge Sonic fan so I'm probably going to get a few little facts wrong, please at least consider not nitpicking me into oblivion." XP EDIT: THIS INCLUDES TELLING ME ABOUT THE BLUE SPHERES I KNOW HOW TO DO THE BLUE SPHERES NOW I KNEW AFTER THE FIRST PERSON TOLD ME PLEASE STOP
Love your stuff! Please review forces when it comes out
Arlo oops
For the Blue Sphere bonuses btw if you collect only the outer square of blue ones it makes rings appear giving you more room to run
the special stages (the ones where you enter a giant ring found in the stage) are original, the concepts are taken from CD, but them as a whole are completely original
still though, this was a great video, your channel just keeps getting better
Arlo dude this video was good so need not to worry
Just can't stop watching the platform move behind Arlo
AuraMasterUmi Same Here!
Pretty sure that's from project M
Exactly, just realised that lol
My adhd mind
You dislike being punished by being sent back for a single mistake in a level? Never, ever play Fire Emblem.
Heh,so true. God,that game will screw you over if you make a wrong move. I know,I've played Sacred Stones.(along with other FE's)
On the GBA, Binding Blade (FE6, not Blazing Blade) is far, far more unforgiving than the other two (and yet it is still my favorite). Take the traditional formula. Now, make all weapons less-accurate, especially axes, so your plans can be thrown off by a well-timed miss. Also, give enemies a luck stat, which makes them critical more often and increase the critical multiplier from 2x to 3x, which can result in a ton of resets due to characters dying.
Such a great story that would be better with some smarter gameplay design choices. It is tougher than both Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones, but it did not need these "frustration features" to create artificial difficulty on top of it.
Holy...oh man...maybe they'll remake it easier like they did in Tue new one (shadows of Valentina,I think). Wasent binding the one with Roy?
Binding needs a remake if only because it is unreleased in English. It is indeed the one with Roy, and he is one of the weakest lords in the series. He starts off OK, but he does not promote until almost the end of the game. Eliwood and Hector have the same problem, but both of them are at least considerably above average. Roy, you will be holding your breath that he survives when he ends his turn in the later chapters.
I forgot another difference. In FE7 and 8, enemy reinforcements arrive at the end of the CPU's turn, but in 6, they arrive at the beginning, which means they are able to move and attack, too. Nothing like enemies appearing in a safe spot and slaughtering someone you left strayed from the group.
Or Geometry dash

You prefer the Halfpipe over Blue Spheres?
Ooh Arlo, if only you knew what you brought upon yourself by saying that...
more importantly i notice how he makes it harder on himself by not going around the square of spheres making them all rings.
yeah i thought it was pretty commonly accepted that blue spheres was the best form of special stages
I prefer the half pipe tbh probably because the first time I ever beat sonic 2 was the mobile port but I despise the blue spheres
Joemaher2 At least in Blue Spheres, they're beatable. Once I get to the 4th-5th halfpipe, I get stuck on a roadblock and can't get the other chaos emeralds. I mean, the halfpipe requires memorization, while Blue Spheres requires a little skill and puzzle solving.
I can see why he prefers the Halfpipe though. I'm still glad it isn't here.

I agree on you with the whole 'starting zone over' thing.
Bear damn.
@@PiousMoltar someone doesn't know what an opinion is and is also really braindead.
Either stages should be shorter or continuing should send you to the start of the act.
U get sent back that far so u can see how much better you've gotten at the game. If it takes u 6 minutes to beat a level it shouldn't take u anywhere near as long to do it again since you already know the level. I lost in flying battery so many times that act 1 became easy and act 2 became the only obstacle, and after I learned what path I liked most it was even hard anymore, it actually became fun, and I learned all that through retrying the level.
Same. You get 3 lives. It feels like if you die even once before the final acts boss, most of the time you'll die (Looking at you oil ocean and press garden.)

Back in my day, if you took one hit, your game cartridge went up in smoke, and you had to buy another one -
AND WE LIKED IT THAT WAY!
It's sad that I now have to physically smash my own games and consoles to emulate the feelings of yore.
Back in MY day, the whole CONSOLE would short.
Shut up, old timer. Nobody wants to listen to people ramble about what it was like back in their day. Games were unplayable when the console self-destructed. The cartridge self-destruct was an important advancement in video gaming, and make older, awful, games playable for the first time. I hate you and everything you believe in.
Back in my day, when you lost, the system came to life and proceed to kill all of humanity. Good ole 1470s gaming era
Yeah well back in my day if you took a hit then your entire house would explode! And we were happy! You guys and your cartridges blowing up, that was nothing compared to summoning a nuke onto your house! Oh the good ole days of the 1680s.
"Blue balls"
I've not completed Mania, but i loved the saved method on Sonic mega collection for the PS2. You could save anywhere at any time and not have to worry about redoing the level again. It made a huge impact considering you could never save in the original games.
Damn Arlo, the way you got the blue balls one by one...
I hate to be pedantic, but there's nothing I'm more pedantic about than this. Hopefully you're not getting TOO many comments about corrections, so I'm gonna try to do a compilation whenever I see something inaccurate...
-In the Blue Sphere bonus stage, you can trace the outline of a square of spheres to turn them into rings. That makes 'em MUCH quicker.
-The 3D stages are all-new, NOT from Sonic CD. And Sonic nomenclature calls them "Special Stages." Basically, if you get an emerald from an extra mode, it's a special stage. If you don't, it's a bonus stage.
-And speaking of, one big reason they didn't include the half-pipe special stage was because that one gets brought back for EVERY FREAKIN' GAME, it's way more prolific than the others, and most Sonic fans are kind of sick of it.
-You imply that the framerate is higher than the Genesis games, and that's becoming a frustratingly often-repeated point. But that's not true. Genesis did 60fps!
-Genesis Sonic games had continues, so you didn't ALWAYS have to start the whole game over. A continue started you from Act 1 of whatever Zone you died on.
-I'm not even gonna touch your complaint about Game Overs, because I'm in NO POSITION to judge since our experiences would be too different. Your video was the first Game Over I've seen, and I've been playing the game for literally the past 12 hours, ever since it came out. I remember being annoyed when I lost all my lives in Mystic Caves in 1994, but these days, I'm pretty okay at Sonic games. I'd probably feel the same way you did if I was playing something like Crash and it was doing that.
-Finally, it's actually a love letter TO the fans, FROM the fans. The primary decision makers on the development team were prominent members of the Sonic hacking/modding scene that SEGA hired to do this. That's why it's filled with so much passion, because the people who made it grew up loving it.
Weirdly enough, my first console was also a Genesis, and my first game was Sonic 2, though we appear to have diverged from that point, haha. :) I really enjoyed your review, and again, hope you're not getting TOO many comments like these. I hope your experience with Mania might give you some incentive to go back and try the classics again. Thanks, Arlo!
The Geek Critique j
.....Pedantic is an understatement here.
The Geek Critique wait what?
The reason they brought back Blue Sphere is there hasn't been a Stealth and Taxman remake/port of S3K. They already did a really good remake of the halfpipe and released it, in Sonic 2.
As for the framerate, the Genesis nominally ran at 60 FPS (well, 59.94 for bizarre technical reasons involving adding color to black and white TV signals but whatever) wasn't too hard to get to chug a bit - never enough to break the game completely, but enough to be a little annoying. Mania is pretty much rock solid 60 no matter how much crap is on the screen. Seriously fire up debug mode and place a thousand badniks even, it will not drop a frame, it's impressive.
The problem with continues was that they were hard to earn. Basically, if you're constantly earning lives and continues, you don't need them, and if you need them they're hard to earn.
I'm not sure that he implied that the Genesis couldn't do 60fps, but the cartridges didn't have the space to allow for such high-framerate animations in addition to the massive levels. Sonic 1 only had 7 frames of walking animation, and 4 of running.
In Mania, though, just about every animation has been fleshed out to the point that they're at least 30fps each, if not higher. I'm pretty sure that's what he'd meant about the framerate, rather than how smoothly the game ran.
*Arlo, do you ever get that feeling that you're being controlled by an outside force like some sort of.... **_puppet?_*
Aeromeme Lol
Ever get that feeling that you are a drooling ape? I sure do! You couldn't be more desperate for likes and attention if you tried
Underrated comment.
I'm so glad we're finally getting a true sequel to sonic 3. I absolutely love the original 3 games, and this one looks even better. Well done SEGA.

Alro, grab all the blue spheres around the edge of a big patch of blue spheres and they all turn into rings. Makes it way easier. Also if you haven't played Sonic 3 and Knuckles you're missing the best game in the Genesis library.
TheBechtloff I honestly like sonic 2 more but I still enjoy 3 & K
@3:50: The Sphere Bonus stage is only difficult because you are collecting every single sphere. The trick is to just collect the blue spheres around the perimeter of a block of spheres (3x3 or larger). This converts all of the spheres in the block into rings.
Although never explained in-game, it is in the Instruction Manual (in Sonic 3 and Sonic Mania).
"I'm old, i stink at games, and i'm proud" this line just killed me :-D, love your review btw!
7.8/10 Too much speed
"Sonic was never good."
Too much speed isn't that much of an issue in Sonic, but it's a huge issue in Bubsy...
Ah the old "I can't follow a screen" so Sonic is bad argument.
When nobody gets this is a reference to Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's review by IGN...
-7.8/10, too much water
I know the joke, I was just stating a fact because I felt like stating a fact instead of playing along...
I totally agree with you about lives in games. The reason modern platformers, like Rayman Origins, can get away with higher difficulty is because you can try as many times as you need to and you're never set too far back. The only time I can see them having a purpose is when they take the place of a health bar, like in Gradius or Contra. I had to redo Oil Ocean zone too many times in this game.
Arlo did you know if you collect the blue balls in an outline they turn into rings? Its much easier and safer then getting ALL of them.
Its also the only way to gold medal the levels
Sonic Mania is a gem in the franchise, and it really brings me back to the classics.
You're not the only old bad player out there! Same here!

Nice bait, m9
The special stages are not from sonic cd.. They have a few similarities but very very different.
Yeah...wasn't CD getting multiple UFO's and now its catching up with one?
Toons on Strings special stages are a mix of CD , heroes, and s3&k
it's sonic cd style with the ufo, but the racing in full 3d is form sonic r
Its a mix of CD and 3d blast
Gamekille It’s actually a mix of cd, 3d blast and knuckles chaotix
I got a little annoyed over restarting whole zones, but by the time I finally beat them I was finally able to play them at a high level, and that felt amazing. I'd say that made it worth it, though I did have to put down the game quite a bit.
Oh man, if Arlo hates going back for being punished he’s going to hate cuphead 😂
Cuphead never makes you replay 2 lvls and a boss for dying 3 times... it actually has unlimited lives
@@sarcasm2182 cuphead also doesn't run so fast that he can beat the level in a fraction of the time u did the first time. If u game over in a sonic game u should beat the level u lost in much quicker than before unless u die really early or have a learning disability
@@SquidwardProfilePic it's not about how dificult it is its about how god damn frustrating sonic mania can be when you ran out of lives in the 2 boss. Cuphead can be pretty challenging but it feels fair constantly. Having to replay shit over and over feels cheap and annoying
@@sarcasm2182 cuphead and sonic mania are frustrating in the exact same ways. If u fucked up in either game u have to replay the same shit u already did, losing to a boss in cuphead when you were a pixel away from winning could be considered more painful than anything in sonic mania. Both games are about learning and skill mastery, if you're bad then the only way to get better is to keep trying and keep learning, and both games reward u for learning handsomely.
Shout outs to the Project M background you're using. Sonic team was one of the few that were openly sympathetic with Project M after Nintendo shut it down

Aka: Arlo doesn't know how to use the physics system very well, but he still has fun.
Here's the layout of the zones.
Act 1 is ACT 1 and 2 Mixed up and mashed together with some new stuff thrown in.
ACT 2 throws a wrench at you and is entirely new.
The new zone are like ACT 2 from the classic zones.
My favorite zone so far is Press Garden ACT 2. I only got as far as ZONE 10 - ACT 2 I'll let you discover what 10-2 is yourself.
Remember the 2nd eggman boss? I was fucking jumping up and down when I saw it. I loved that battle. And the 3rd eggman boss was just as great. Am I right?
Press Garden act 2 is the best looking stage with the best music

I actually think lives need to go as an idea. I get that it feels like a much less challenging experience without lives but just let me restart a level or last save or whatever don't punish me further for running out of an arbitrary counter...
Today I learned Arlo and I both played Sonic 2 as our first game. I also learned he's a heathen who likes those half pipe stages. Also I guess I don't mind going back to the beginning of the zone since I spent so long replaying the old games until I could beat the whole game near perfect.
Excellent review Arlo!! Thanks!!
You can buy a Sega Genesis pretty cheap for Sonic's 20 somethingth anniversary from some places.
i still have my genesis handheld. just not sure what happened to it..

BOTW CHAMPIONS BALLED STORY CONFIRMED
Yeah, you're are supposed to walk around the edges of the blue sphere groups to turn them into rings, makes it a lot easier. Also, we have had the half pipe a lot of times, so I'm glad blue spheres is here to shake it up.
In addition, while the bonus stages are inspired by Sonic CD, they are different in gameplay and goals.
Anyways, nice review and I'm glad you liked it. This game is shaping up to be phenomenal and really takes me back to the good old days.
Yay! Glad to see some Sonic love! Had always wondered if you had any experience with the Sonic series or not.
Side note, a big part of the reason why they went with "Blue Sphere" bonus stages and not the "Half Pipe" ones is that the half pipe has been re-used probably 5 or 6 times now in various different installments/newer games. A lot of the community has kinda burned out on the halfpipe, so the throwback to blue sphere is a way to nostalgic-ly spice things up, so to speak.
Great review, can't wait for my collectors edition to come in the mail in the next day or two!
*Doing something important*
*Sees Arlo uploaded*
Me: I can do the important stuff later!
But isn't Arlo important?
Arlo IS the important stuff.
One of my only gripes is that most sub-bosses/bosses fights don't have extra rings unless you beat a section first so you're straight fuck if you get hit and don't catch any ( Oil Ocean and Mirage Saloon)
Oil Ocean is particularly hard that way, if you're in the oil and you get hit, the rings just disappear in the oil.
Nemcoification Yea. I hated that one
I fucking despise the oil ocean boss, i've had times where I come in with ~20 lives and get a game over in just ONE FUCKING BOSS
Was kind of torn about which game to get next. You convinced me to get this.
Good review. Thanks Arlo!

I'll be getting it Friday. Looking forward to it!
"I wonder why they didn't use the bonus stage where you run down a tube to collect rings"...
...Oh they have...they have...for the past 24 years...
So the reason we aren't getting the Sonic 2 Half-pipe in this game is probably because we've had it in:
Sonic 2
Sonic 3D Blast Saturn
Sonic Pocket Adventure
Sonic Rush
Sonic Colors DS
Sonic 4 Episode 2
I think it's time to give it a break you know.
Of those, I've only played the first 2 and Rush. And somehow I never even knew it was in Rush. I never knew it had been used more than that.
Don't forget about sonic heroes. The half pipe in that game was a mess, but it existed.
You make it sound like plugging in two games was a bad thing and it wasn't it was totally aweesssoommmeeeee
Ragesauce it was awesome, s&k was its own game but plugging s3 ontop made it 1 huge adventure and plugging s2 let you be knuckles in s2... it was dlc before dlc as even a thing!
Hey Arlo! Great job on the review. Just want to offer you a few small tips that may improve your experience.
When you get stuck on a quarterpipe jump, then hold jump until you hit the ground, this activates the new ability "dropdash" which was specifically designed for that issue.
In get blue spheres going around the border of the squares/"circles" of spheres turns them into rings preventing trapping yourself.
Hope it helps

It's nice to hear Sonic is doing great again. He too was one of my first entries into video gaming, and although his gaming history has been spotty, Sonic Mania looks AMAZING. I doubt I'll pick it up anytime soon as I have a bunch of other games to play, but I certainly don't judge you on your gaming skills (or lack of), Arlo. You're a muppet, after all. You make up for it as a showman doing your reviews.
I definitely agree with what you said about having to restart the entire zone again, it should've saved at the start of each act. I hate going through the same stuff again if I make a small mistake. God I thought no one else would mention it

I think the reason for starting at the beginning of the zone is because the whole reason Sonic was created is to speed through acts you've played many many times.
I hate it when people pretend Sonic hasn't been good since the Genesis days just because of the mid 2000's.

I disagree with what you said about the bonus stages. I thought the blue sphere stages were really fun, but I found the half-pipe fustrating and unfun. No skill envolved, just memorization. It’s even WORSE when you have Tails with you, with his delayed reactions having him running into bombs and losing your rings.

Another fantastic review!
I have played Sonic Mania personally and it's one of my favorite games ever. I grew up with the Sonic CD and later played Sonic 1, so Sonic Mania was for me. But for whatever reason, it took a long time before it clicked with it, and then it clicked, it clicked _hard._ I do also agree with the life system complain. Yeah I get it, the game should be hard, but that is only frustrating than nothing else.
And talking about the follow-up. Yeah, that didn't really happen...
Also, that ending is truly a hedgehog moment.
Honestly the video in the Nintendo E-Shop sold me on this game, you're review basically just said "why are you waiting, buy it NOW"
Who else cringed when Arlo said that the half pipe special stages were better than the blue sphere special stage?
He doesn't know how many times we've seen that half pipe.
Lock Sonic 1 onto Sonic & Knuckles and try to beat all of the Blue Sphere levels and then tell me which one is better.
I don't know why everyone calls them halfpipe, they're a full pipe. The gravity only prevents you from running on the ceiling all the time, but you can circle it easily.
Sho They are halfpiped if it was full pipe it would go all around the layout kinda like the ones in knuckles chaotix
M&K no, it fucking wasnt, especially in sonic 2. That was just trial and error since you could barely see in front of you
I'm... early? For once? I don't wanna brag about that though, I just wanna say how much I love Arlo!
Goodyvta
It is impossible to be early. To be early is to be here before the video was done being uploaded, so no, you are not early.
Pineapple lasagna is my favorite pokemon in overwatch
If I were to say "it's early in the morning" does that mean it's before the morning?
No however, in this instance we are using early in the context of arriving. To arrive early is to come before the time stated, now that is not possible with a video, only as it was uploaded or after.
I can arrive early too, despite the event having already begun. I can go to a fair early before most people arrive. Same could be said for the video. I don't know why you're arguing.
Watching you play the Blue Ball-stages was PAIN.
Oh geez. Arlo and I had the same first console and played the same first game. That's great!
Am I the only one cringing at how bad he was at those special stages?
I don't find punishing people for getting a game over to be a problem it encourages you to get good at the game also this isn't a very long game to begin with
right!?!
Yep. Arlo had to ask a friend to find out how to do the orbs minigame right. (It made me cringe when i saw him do it in the video)Also,it does get kinda frustrating when your near the end of a boss, and have to start over, but I agree with Brady boy. I think it gives more satisfaction beating a zone when you do it in a whole, just like how it was back then. At least we don't have to do 3 acts like Sonic 1 and CD.
brady_boy 26 I agree
I'd disagree. It just exists to pad out the game run time(Though I'm sure Mania does it for Nostalgia pandering). It's not asking you to improve. You're wasting time on something you already proved you could do, while wasting time you could be using to get better at the part that killed you.
I think it depends on the player. like how there are those who hate Dark Souls and say the level design is trial and error , versus the people who see death in a game as a challenge to overcome.
I don't believe that punishing a player for making mistakes is bad, but the degree of punishment varies between genres and should stay varied. I'll tell you right now that as much as I LOVE Samus Returns, I felt kind of insulted when one of my deaths didn't throw me back to my last save station, and instead dropped me off in front of the last room i entered.I guess that is just me though.
While I agree with Arlo that lives are a holdover from arcades, I still think they are a fundamental part of games of this kind. If the game just made you start over from the last checkpoint after a gameover, there really isn't a punishing aspect to it. you could just throw yourself at the boss without any real consequence to get better.
This is my central point here, the choice to give a game a lives system isnt about taking your money anymore since it isnt an arcade game, its become an incentive to think about your movement and how to approach obstacles carefully.I cannot tell you how many times i've been frustrated at playing old games i haven't played before and lost all my lives relatively far in the game, resulting in having to start from the beginning. I may put down the controller at the time, but it makes me want to do better next time and see how i can do better than before.
watching you play blue sphere made a part of me die inside
also I agree with your single gripe, there's just too much to do as an adult
when you talk about game overs it reminds me of how I am playing through crash bandicoot insane trilogy, more specifically I am stuck on stormy ascent.
