I still think that there are a few singers who can be counted on the fingers of one hand who are still able to alert societies to the dangers of wars, their catastrophes and consequences of these wars , including, of course, Roger Waters and Chris de Burgh . Such singers are reckoned pacifists and deserve respect and appreciation. They are an example of how art can serve societies and spread peace among . Such singers deserve a round of applause for their noble arts
I listened to this great song again on 6 June. As a veteran this song touches me deeply. Acknowledging the horror of war, sacrifice, letting go, and new beginnings.
This is the most profound of Chris de Burgh’s songs I think . Refugees , Lake Geneva , the guns of war, and the dead young men on the Normandy beaches of Juno, Omaha and Gold on D Day . My dad’s old university friend was killed on the Normandy beaches on D Day at the age of 21 - RIP Philippe Pimentil ! Can’t find your name on the new memorial to the allied dead on the Normandy beaches - maybe so little of you was left you’re just buried as ‘ a British soldier , known only unto God ‘ . Let’s hope all these sacrifices haven’t been totally in vain and someone puts a stop to that monster Putin ( another bloody Hitler ) and helps the courageous Ukrainians to WIN !
Chris de Burgh is one of the finest musicians. His music touches the heart like few others can. And it’s lasting. Beautiful stories. Complex songs at times sounding simple. I’d always hoped he’d collaborate with ABBA or Sarah Brightman. I saw him in concert in Sydney many years back for his ‘Beautiful Dreams’ tour. He made me cry.
Das ist ein Künstler der nie abgehoben ist Immer ehrlich und glaubwürdig Jedes seiner Konzerte die wir erlebt haben, waren einzigartig Dafür tausend Dank.
I remember the time we met in the Ostseehalle of KIEL so well... Your music took away my pain countless times and will do so further - You are my hero till eternity, Chris de Burgh! Thank you so much! 🎧🌻
I've loved Chris's music since I first heard it played over a pub speaker system in Bridgend. The song was 'Don't Pay The Ferryman' and I thought "That's music I want to hear more of". Since then, I have pretty well every album he's released and most of his sheet music songbooks. I play his stuff on my keyboard and never get tired of hearing it and playing it. His concerts are a joy, his music tells stories and touches the emotions. Thank you, Chris.
Ja.
Takes me back, out in the desert of the first Gulf war waiting to advance into Iraq with A sqdn Royal Scots as a young 18 year old lying on top of an army truck canopy watching the night sky with my walkman on listening to Chris De Burgh watching our jets fly over switching off there lights and 5 minutes later watching the horizon light up with tracer and bombs and feeling the ground shake knowing that is where I will be heading not knowing if I will live to see my parents again.Feeling never goes away even after thirty plus years. To all our past and present veterans uk and world wide may you stay safe.
@Salim Benatik felt like a war to me when lumps of lead are flying past your head but obviously to make a comment like yours you must have personal experience of war. So with your experience of combat define a war ?
This Gentleman has had the most memory in songs that I remember since a teenagers besides ABBA. I am excited that I am going to see him this October at Casino Rama. I wish it was tomorrow. All his songs have a story behind it and thats what I feel makes a real story and song :D Love him
I was a Casino Rama too, such a shame the concert was cut short because the house wanted people to go back to the machines. I did get to meet Chris at Place Des Arts though.
Greetings Chris just to say you're a brilliant entertainer and musician thanks so much for sharing your talent with us and you are a lovely kind person ❤️ delighted to see this video love your videos blessings from Ireland..❤❤

I come from Bavaria, South Germany, and I ask myself the question if I would have resisted against the Nazis? I doubt it. On Juno, Omaha and Gold so many "boys" were killed for freedom, including German people. I remember the "boys" with great sadness. May they Rest in peace.
Chris please come to CANADA! My Mother (passed in 2012) bought your Into the Light album when I was 10 for Lady and Red. I got hooked on every song. I'm 46 now and would love to see you love!!! Stay safe, let's kick COVID19 in the rear end!!!!

@@leewilliams2763 Same here. For some reason it makes me sad to listen to this. Maybe because we're "saying goodbye" to the world as we once knew it. I don't know.
One day in the fall of 2010 was my last day on my annual vacation in my beautiful and wonderful country #Apamea, when I was alone to our ancient hills and put this beautiful song .. I never thought that it would be a farewell song for everyone .. Ten years have passed and I still say goodbye to everyone. The most beautiful memories and the most wonderful country #Syria #Apamea .. This song cuts my heart whenever I enjoy it.

You must redeem from guilt. Berlin IS The most guilty atmosphere in Germany. I was sad there. Other german Cities are more liberated from guilt.

SAY GOODBYE TO IT ALL SONGTEXT
We took a boat over Lake Geneva.
It was raining all night long
We were lucky and we saw no enemy
And came from Switzerland, poor refugees
Far from the guns of war
We said goodbye to it all
They brought us in to a nurse's station
Half a mile behind the lines
Oh Lord, how my heart was breaking
To see the children, and the walking wounded
Hoping for a ticket home
To say goodbye to it all
I woke up on a cold blue morning
I see her there, standing right beside me
Long years since I left her at the borderline
And how she found me I'll never know
We decided there and then
To say goodbye to it all (to it all)
Say goodbye to it all
Say goodbye to it all...
Took a train from Paris to the ocean
Found a small hotel by the coast
As we walked along the beaches of Normandy
We came to Juno, Omaha and Gold
And whispered a prayer for the boys
Who said goodbye to it all
Now we've got our own place by the water
And I have a job in the old hotel
She is ready and she's hoping for a daughter
Well I don't mind, we've made our choice.
We've got all the time in the world
We said goodbye to it all
We said goodbye to it all.
Say goodbye to it all
Say goodbye to it all
Say goodbye to it all
Say goodbye to it all.
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
I find it hard to read those lyrics without choking up! What a great song!
