@@Buckblacket Philip K. DIck always had a recurring theme in his novels about original vs copies no matter if it's objects or animals or humans. What *is* however frequently pointed out that in the case a copy is perfectly interchangeable with the original what's the fundamental difference between the two? In Dick's mind there isn't any. Whether Deckard himself was a replicant or not is equally irrelevant. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't. Why are replicants treated like property and machines when they're humans in all aspects (in some aspects actually superior). How does artificial life and intelligence become a slave while regular life isn't? Harrison Ford btw said in early interviews he was rather upset by Scott retroactively claiming he was a replicant for he had acted under the impression he was human. I always believed Scott just threw the audience a bone and later "agreed" with them. To me however it doesn't make any sense why they would entrust a replicant to hunt down and retire (kill actually) other replicants. Since they develop their own emotions and free-thinking eventually they become highly "unpredictable" (i.e. refuse to be mindless slaves for "questionable" work) and therefore would be too erratic and volatile to entrust with such a highly important task. Deckard clearly is at the stage of being disillusioned with his job and at first refuses it until Bryant threatens him. A fresh replicant (i.e. mindlessly obedient to its owners) would take the assignment no questions asked. If Deckard is like Rachel, i.e. the latest experiment with implanted memories and feelings, such a replicant would indeed be the last you'd send on such a mission. They're simply too human. Besides if Deckard is a replicant what kind of model is he anyway when Leon nearly turns him into mincemeat and he clearly is no match for Batty and would have been killed by Pris too if she kept beating him. And if he is designed as a "police officer/bladerunner" replicant why not make him incredibly tough and durable? If Deckard was indeed a replicant on a mission Gaff could easily retire him on the spot once the mission was over. Gaff didn't seem like a type to respect anybody. In a deleted scene Gaff has a conversation with Bryant in which he is asked about metaphysics he crudely replies "I p*ss on metaphysics". In other words he is cold-hearted, no-nonsense guy who sees replicants as mere machines period, and anybody getting emotional over it are in the wrong line of work. Holden seems to have known Deckard for a long time (in a deleted scene). In other words Deckard couldn't have been an "old replicant". I know it's a movie and obviously it can't be 100% logical. But to me the "Is Deckard himself a replicant" appears rather shoehorned in and is an artificial plot twist. The real question is what the fundamental difference is between a born human and an artificial human (replicant), *not* if Deckard is human or replicant (which by virtue of the first part becomes an academic and largely irrelevant question.) The underlying message not the details.
