My cousin had a blue 2006 Monte Carlo SS with the 5.3. Purchased it right out of the showroom floor. Definitely a sleeper and hurt quite a lot of feelings of people that thought it was just a S.C. @@howieewalt1322 cylinder deactivation is really common these days, it's also garbage, it's the primary reason why the newer LT engines are inferior to the older LS's, the lifters can fail and lunch the cam and GM has done nothing to revise the part and the dealer repair (assuming the lifter fails in its collapsed state rather than it's extended state and therefor doesn't destroy the cam) is ~$8k at the dealer, total top end rebuild required.
Glad you got to review this car. I got a mostly stock 2007 GXP in Black with a ZZP cutback & I was waiting for you to review a LS4 car one day , One other little thing you might not have know is that the ls4 can be found in 2 other cars as well besides the Impala SS, GM also put it in the Monte Carlo SS and the Buick LaCrosse Super.
Finally!!!! I had an 06 Dark Cherry Metallic GP GXP with a magnaflow exhaust. It pulled hard, was comfortable, sounded amazing, got good mpg on the highway, and had a good (for 2000s gm) interior. The HUD and staggered wheel setup were pretty cool too. Definitely have to disable the DoD, it shouldn’t hurt fuel economy and makes the car feel and sound much nicer.
Amazing how far transmissions have come in 18 years. Can def hear the difference, the bog and not staying in the PowerBand. Love seeing reviews of forgotten cars like this.
Cars were built to be affordable, easy to work on, and not over complicated in the past. GM cars and trucks were so easy to work on and parts interchanged easy. This kept prices down. My father bought a brand new F150 in 93 with a V8 for 12,500. Fast forward to 1999 I bought brand new F150 Step side 4.6 V8 with Manual Transmission for 18,500, but the stick was 23,500. The price on new truck with a V8 today is insane. Just the base models are nearly 40k.
I bought a 2008 Grand Prix GXP about 8 years ago and it's probably the best car I've ever owned. Of course, with it having over 200k miles on it it goes through a little oil, but it moves around in traffic really well and is fun on the old winding country roads.
I have driven, and been a passenger in both an Impala SS, and a GP GXP. Both cars are actually a lot of fun, they are pretty quick, bone-stock, and fall into the sleeper category. Also, In Canada, the GXP came with Brembo brakes and Bridgestone Potenza tires on them, stock. Unheard of from domestic car makers at the time. It was funny that the front wheels were wider than the rears, but for an obvious reason. The suede and leather interiors were pretty nice too, and the vehicle felt more special and sporty than the same era Camry or Accord. I think it's awesome you have done all of these videos of the ZZP cars, I think you have made a lot of viewers aware that you can make GM platforms fun and reliable, and have something more unique than what most people drive.
@@wheeldfreedom8353 you are definitely right. They do not handle. I had a 06 Impala SS for 12 years. No handling at all. Still loved the car until it got old.
I have an 07 still running in great condition that I bought brand new off the dealer lot. They drive well. It's smooth and feels like youre floating. The steering is very responsible. Ultimately it's a commuter car with great highway power. It has way more power than it needs off the line, but if you treat it well, it'll have all the power you need whenever you want it. Im never getting rid of mine unless it gets literally destroyed.
I liked my 00 Continental more than my Ls 05 grand prix. The Lincoln had a 4.6 dohc v8, similar gearing at 3.56:1, and it had a limited slip. Its funny because Ford rated the Conti at 275 hp back in the mid 90s when it was equipped with B heads and mark viii/navi intake cams. By 99, the Conti had the same C heads and cams as a 99/01 Cobra but they kept the power rated at 275. My bone stock 2000 model ran low 14s bone stock!
Ive only driven mostly FWD cars including a grand prix GT of that generation. So when i drove a GXP it was pretty natural feeling to me except i had alot more power
When I was 4 years old, my Dad bought a purple haze metallic grand prix gxp new in 2007. As a kid, I absolutely adored this car lol. Sold it in 2014 with about 47k miles on. Miss it so much. This video brought back so many memories of that car 🥲
I had an '04 GTP in Atlanta. Loved the car as it was the first car I ever started working on. The torque steer is predictable and manageable so it really becomes a non-issue. I do miss the heads-up display. My favorite feature of it was that with a press of a button, you could turn off all of the gauge lights and the interior would be almost completely dark.
Those 2008-2009 model year LS4 5.3 Liter V-8 GM W-body cars provided great performance with good fuel economy. Dude, read your GM history. GM was putting big block V8s in front wheel drive Oldsmobile Toronados and Cadillac Eldorados back in the 1960s. Not new, just new-to-you. 😂
I had a 2-door Grand Am GT with every engine and suspension mod you could get from RKSport. It was kinda quick but handled very well. And it looked good with that ram air hood and lowering springs. Sadly I left someone borrow it and it got totaled.
@@djinkentertainment same here. I had a '99 Sunfire GT with the RKSport lip kit, induction hood and twin deck spoiler, clear corners and clear taillights. It really bums me out that when people talk about the GM cars that were V8 FWD sedans, they completely overlook the Oldsmobile Aurora because either A: they think it looks ugly and won't even look at any other part of it, or B: they never knew the Oldsmobile Aurora existed to begin with. The L47 V8 in that car was so good that GM used it in at least 6 different race cars, and the legend himself, Carol Shelby, even took notice of the quality of the L47. Yet, in spite of all that, the entire car community as a whole has all but thrown the Aurora to the wayside, and seemingly totally forgot that the car even existed to begin with. It's a platform worth building on, and the lack of aftermarket support is a direct result of never getting any love from car enthusiasts...
Aurora Was a great car!!! My fraternity bro had one and it was a nice car!!! Always liked those cars, it was ahead of it’s time and really a Japanese & euro luxury car competitor.

I used a impala ss as a long distance cruiser because it was comfortable and the highway pulls made me smile, and that should be a good enough reason to have had owned one.
You pretty much nailed the description of these cars. I have an Impala SS and it's my daily. It's comfortable for cruising and if you need a little extra power to pass someone you have it. It's not crazy fast by any means but it's a nice cruiser for going on trips.

The Pontiac front drivers handled better than the chevy's - one reason was that they actually used wider tires in front than in back. Chevy was like no way we're doing that, it looks too weird no matter how good it handles.
I have the gxp due to the fact it has ugraded bilstien suspension, offset wheels, Heads up display, information center with trans temp and much more, tap shift, and quad tip exhaust, vented bumper and fenders for cooling ,and there is stuff that im forgetting but its definitely the best between the monte, impala, or buick with the ls4

Ayo I had a the same gen GT. In 06 the GT basically became the gtp; they put the supercharged v6 in the GT and dropped gtp name. This was the car that made me realize i could be into cars on a common waiter's budget (circa 2016). It had a myriad of issues and legit caught on fire on the highway, however i was young and very inexperienced with enthusiast cars; it was a lesson I needed. Domestic car brand makes FWD single OH cam supercharged v6? And they said domestics aren't quirky?! PS. Was definitely not expecting you to cover a Grand Prix. I'm into Nissan's and Imports these days but Pontiac and GM enthusiast cars will always have a place in my heart, so I appreciate that.
the grand prix makes an absolutely fantastic daily driver. I have 3 lol. 100% would take even a gtp comp g over the impala ss. Another thing you dont really see until you own one of these is the insane cost to reliability ratio, especially with the supercharged v6. I have seen so many of these things running awesome with over 300k. Seen them last even longer too. You can pick one of them up for 2-4k and they will take you anywhere and everywhere nonstop for years and years with little to no maintenance other than fluid changes and basic stuff you need to do on any car.

Displacement On Demand is the active fuel management system the LS engines have. AFM can reduce to four cylinders, two on each bank active and two inactive. DFM (dynamic fuel management), in the new LS engines (L84 and L87), can actually reduce down to one firing cylinder at a time. It has 17 cylinder patterns to use to reduce engine vibration, a lot of sensors and software go into it.
My son just got one of these. I was suprised how nice it is. Kinda like when he had the V6 accord its no race car but I found it way more enjoyable than expected. His had the trans replaced with a trans cooler added and DoD shut off in the tune before he got it so hopefully the whole front drivetrain won't have to pulled out any time soon.

Buick had an LS4 version, too. I had an '08 GXP & I still miss that car. There's headers & a turbo kit for those cars, too. It's basically the same as a regular 5.3L, but the crank snout is 13mm shorter than normal to work in that FWD setup. But, the 4T56E trans can't hold above 400hp without a great rebuild/shift kit.
I had an 05 gtp with the some work done to the motor and trans and it was a beast! Used to take it drag racing on French road in Detroit and used to DEMOLISH almost every car that pulled up beside me. Eventually ended up joining the GPF car club and had a lot of fun doing so
I'm in VA and I drive a 2005 GTP with the supercharger. I've had a few mechanical issues in the 4 years I've had it, (replaced a transmission coolant line, new ignition switch, plastic coolant elbows blew out, replaced with metal ones) but at least it has never overheated like both of the Grand Ams I've owned. It's pretty peppy, but the suspension is a little rough. The HUD was broken when I bought it, and the cruise only half works. The rear wheels also have a pretty extreme camber compared to what I'm used to, so I go through rear tires quicker than is probably normal. I do like it overall though. I need to get it painted, as I hit a deer 6 months into owning it, so it has a door, fender and front fascia that doesn't match the rest of the car lol.
Had a GXP for about 8 years. From 2008 to 2016 Downpipe. Magnaflow and mild cam tune daily driver. Put about 110,000 miles on it. Going to pick up another one at some point for the collection. Maybe turbo.
This brings back memories. I owned a 2004 GTP lightly modded. But the GP really launched me into car clubs and that culture. Met a lot of cool people that I'm still friends with today even though we no longer have GPs. I'm very biased so out of all the W-body cars the GP is hands down the best one. ZZP got a nice bit of money from me in them days LOL.
GXP for me. It's low and it looks angry. I replaced a set of tires on one a few years ago and I enjoyed sitting in it. Seats were soft, but once you turned the key, that V8 reminded you it wasn't a 3800sc.
My neighbor has both of those(SS slso, though rebadged a Holden of course) Had to have the trans in the GXP rebuilt. Sent it somewhere to have it redone with a few upgrades. Just got it back, the trans..... he seems satisfied

Hey Karol... quick tip... you can tune it to not go into 4 cylinder mode.
@@_Bishopton still has crap lifters though. I'm sure that was part of the reason for the swap. I wonder how many trans the guy has been through
Glad you got to review this car.
The GXP/GTP and Cobalt SS are some of the best sleepers. Everyone sees them and goes "oh an economy car" and then get absolutely destroyed.
The neon srt4 too. Such a beast because of how light it is
The GXP/GTP isn’t economy..
Destroyed? At a track? Or stop light to stop light? Haha
Always wanted this car haha. I didn’t care that I didn’t make sense then and I don’t care that it doesn’t make sense now lol
I think it's awesome you have done all of these videos of the ZZP cars, I think you have made a lot of viewers aware that you can make GM platforms fun and reliable, and have something more unique than what most people drive.
lmao....sleeper.....yeah ok
That transmission from factory is past its limit. Shame that it needs to be rebuilt to be reliable
They are very cool fun cars i think an good sleepers especially the impala ss
The w body platform is so underrated. They handle far better than have any right to
Until you get into a platform that can actually handle. Coming from someone who had a ~350hp gtp
@@wheeldfreedom8353 you are definitely right. They do not handle. I had a 06 Impala SS for 12 years. No handling at all. Still loved the car until it got old.

I mean I hurl my 07 gp through corners and it Handles it better than I would have ever expected for sure

I absolutely love these cars and I’m surprised more people didn’t build them

They probably would have but they fell apart. I had an 08 GP with the 3800. The engine was bulletproof but the car fell apart around it.

You need to drive an Olds Tornado with the 455ci and front wheel drive! Mash the go peddle in one of those and you'll know torque steer!
Toronado, not tornado.
@SomeOne_86 probably auto correct

@@forterierocks Sorry, people often say it wrong, I've seen it irl.
Just throw it in reverse and now you have a rear engine rear wheel drive V8 up to about the top of the reverse gear
Just drill a hole in the other end of the gearbox, weld a shaft in and flip it around and mount it back in, problem solved.
0:15 you forgot about the buick lacrosse super😢
That LS4 was rated at 303 horsepower, and the W-car went from 0-60 in 5.4 seconds with a top speed of 150 m.p.h; they were:
Buick Lacrosse Super
Pontiac Grand Prix GXP
Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
Chevrolet Impala SS
I have seen a few modded LS4 V-8 W-cars beaten Camaros and Mustangs in a drag race. Those LS4 equipped W-cars can pull hard
Fun fact, the front wheels and tires are wider than the rears. To better manage the torque I guess.
Man I used to love RK sport. It's where I purchased the ram air hood and body kit for my 99 cavalier back in the good old days.
The second gen Aurora changed platforms, didn't help.
Aurora Was a great car!!! My fraternity bro had one and it was a nice car!!! Always liked those cars, it was ahead of it’s time and really a Japanese & euro luxury car competitor.

Honestly if you're going to build it please get a good tune. The one in this video sounded like it's stock with an intake. They open up way more and can push your shift points to 6100rpm instead of 5700, makes a huge difference. Stock they'll Dyno 245-255* can get to 300 on e85 and tune easy, if you switch your intake manifold to an ssr intake 93mm throttle body and get 3 inch catless exhaust you can pick up another 50hp as well.

I used to have one of these! It was petty fun! Big engine, big brakes, smallish car. It was nice.
I love the look of these cars man, wish Pontiac was still around, would've loved to see what it'd look like today
The Monte Carlo SS was cool with the Ls4. I see those in Florida alot
I’m rocking an ‘04 Bonneville GXP with the 4.6 Northstar. It’s been taken care of because it’s at 186k miles and still runs strong.
Had a GXP for about 8 years. From 2008 to 2016 Downpipe. Magnaflow and mild cam tune daily driver. Put about 110,000 miles on it. Going to pick up another one at some point for the collection. Maybe turbo.
Monte Carlo SS and Buick LaCrosse Super. Also you say this is your first FWD V8? Never driven a Northstar Cadillac?
"Ope Bye" HAHAHAHAHAHA. I love it. The GXP is AWESOME.
I've always preferred Pontiac designs to Chevy designs (Aztek excluded). I'd definitely pick the GXP over the Impala SS.
My neighbor has both of those(SS slso, though rebadged a Holden of course) Had to have the trans in the GXP rebuilt. Sent it somewhere to have it redone with a few upgrades. Just got it back, the trans..... he seems satisfied
