Wow!! Back in 2012 I bought a 2011 2LT RS Camaro (black with white racing stripes) with 7500 miles when I graduated college! It was my dream car after watching transformers in high school! Unfortunately in 2014 I sold it at 40,000 miles because it was misfiring every couple thousand miles. It ended up destroying my cats and GM stopped honoring the 36k mile/3 year warranty. Chevrolet could not stop the issue from happening. What I think happened was carbon choked up the intake valves and it was back when that problem was a new phenomenon so shops had no idea what was causing it. When you work on a car im super familiar with i swear I just wish I could tell you things like... the weights on the calipers were only on 2010 cars, the 2011+ cars added rollerskating weights to the pads... or that you don't need spring compressors for the springs because of how low compression they are. I did mine by hand on a 23 mile car.
I just learned ST & KW are basically the same! Also, $5 for a gallon of fuel along with the gnarly taxes. You gotta get out of Chicago! Money straight down a pothole
@ At first I thought he misspoke, even then realized within seconds that was highly unlikely so did research. Love learning new things. For the average consumer. You wouldn’t notice the difference between either brands. Solid opportunity to save a few bucks, as KW make excellent products.
I remember helping the mechanic at a gas station I worked at in 1984 compressor a spring. We were compressing the spring with the old school hydraulic lift you'd see in gas station back rooms. The ones buried in cement. Anyway... The spring slipped and shot across the room so fast we didn't even see it. I imagine it would've done some damage to us if it hit us.
I was nervous seeing it pointed at his lower torso, even with the spring compressors in place. When I do stuff like that, I think, "Do I trust my life to this tool?" That mask won't help if it lets go 😂, but I appreciate his emphasis on prioritizing safety.
I'm firebird guy myself, and miss driving manuals, my Sunfire 5spd could achieve tank avg of 31.5 mpg driving normally p.s. when dyno testing a car. load is your friend more load higher power numbers, see numerous times, only during track runs would you see a change if you monitor data, main effect is a slight improvement on rpm gain accelerating out of a turn, you would see even more with deleting the ac system, but that's not the point of your car.
Please don’t sell! We, your humble viewers, were super excited about following your LS3 journey! The SS is the perfect LSC project - modern, but not too modern. Please please please keep and modify!
@18:00, Alex, there was a Red Bumblebee (bug) toy back in the day. Idk if there was a cartoon or comic book reason for it, but i had both a red and a yellow Bumblebee. Now you have one too. Or you could wrap it? And get Autobot decals! Please, get Autobot decals, and show your kids...

I can remember first hearing about ratcheting spanners (wrenches). I actually purchased some last year, i still tend to go for my solid spanners first, especially to crack or properly tighten, but in some situations ratcheting spanners are an absolute game changer.

In Denmark the gas price is 8,10 a gallon. So you Americans is lucky to drive nice cars with nice engines. Love your videos 😊. Keep them coming, Alex 👏👍
@@turtle2448thomas its true. Its about 14kr for 1 liter of 95 octane which equates to 2$ a liter. A gallon is around 4 liters so basically 8$ a gallon. Taxes on cars are also insane
My Daughter married a young man from Denmark and they live in Billund. My Son in law works for a Pork company Danish Crown , My daughter is an executive for Lego . Denmark is Beautiful. Your Christmas and New years is amazing. We visit 3 times a year. But yes the gas is expensive. My daughter has a Tesla and recently they added the plug at there home. Beautiful country.
@Taino871 sure i love my country. But its got nothing on american car culture. For example the first time registration fee can go as high as 150% of a cars original value. Anything the car is worth over 29k$ when its new has a added registration tax of 150% of whatever the car is worth more than 29k. So basically a new mercedes s class can end up costing more than someones house easily here. It sucks for car people :(. So you also know if someone owns a fancy car in Denmark they must be REALLY well off
Dude! I've watched alot of your vids and I am impressed at the vast diversity and your knowledge base is simply incredible. But this issue was my absolute favorite! Keep up the awesome work. Very professional. Fantastic array. Thank you~ 🏆
Wow, only $5/gallon! I am paying $7.39/gallon over here in Switzerland. One of the reasons I prefer a 4 cylinder turbo (Mini R55 S). These days I am doing only 7K miles per year (home office, travel often by train to airport and back), so the impact is not as bad. In the USA I was easily doing 3x the mileage, per year. Back then...gas was around 95 cents a gallon!!!!!
Epa is one of the main reasons we have massive suvs I drive a 1988 lincoln town car but modern cars and suvs are pretty much as big as it usually bigger.
So it’s been a while since I’ve wrenched on my cars. Today I had to replace the alternator and belt and pulleys on my 4.3 Chevy Express van with 300,000 miles on it. I wanted you to know you inspired me to do a bunch of “while you’re in there’s “. I hit a wall but carried on bc of you! Thanks!!
Weighted sockets. Yes. Honda crank bolt. Also, if you jam a prybar between the ball side of the sway bar links and the bracket and push apart, you don't need to hold the center with the allen key. Friction will prevent it from spinning.
I wondered where you lived up there. I was up there in Glenview for about a year and a half and I keep trying to spot something I know during your test drives and stuff. I've been to Second City a few times while I was up there. Sat in line at Pizza Oven and Grinder for three hours. Worth It! Cool to know about where you were at for a while. Thanks for the videos.
Love your videos, the amount of details in your videos are just awesome. You should try to find a camshaft upgrade that can keep mpg the same and add more power. The details fron that video would help a lot of DIY camaro owners. Keep it up man
I don’t know if there really are any… I’ve been trying to research Comp Cam’s FSL (50-state legal) fully drop-in/“plug-and-play” cam. It’s supposedly a CARB compliant cam upgrade for Gen III/IV GM LS V8 engines. There’s some AFM/VVT specific cams for the automatic transmission variant engine models, with DOD and all that cylinder deactivation stuff. But anyways, it’s supposed to be the same single bolt style cam as the factory one, just with different specs, made for gains, just on the cusp of being CARB compliant somehow. The FSL cams go for about $500-700 or so, but most people assume that the gains (~30-35 WHP) aren’t worth the money and hassle for doing such an upgrade. I was debating it, seeing as how I live in CA, and wanted to get more out of the car besides doing things like a ported stock intake manifold, or building/swapping to a 3.91 final drive.
@ it would have been interesting to watch him dina cam swap, as he is so detailed with his videos, and would have been fun to see but I would highly recommend you do the 3.91 or 4.1 gears, as the 4.1 was the best mod I ever did to my camaro.
Hell yea!!! Always wanted someone to make a more powerful but also more effective ls build❤❤ I’m trying to do that with my ls swapped Volvo 240. I’m currently getting 20mpg with 450hp. Compared to stock with 80hp and 19mpg😂
I think it's important to remind viewers who are not car enthusiasts, car manufacturers are always having to balance comfort for everyday driving by reducing NVH (Noise, Vibration, Handling) and performance, that's why stock sway bars are not beefy, shocks are mushy, and bushings are soft. It's fun and great to upgrade a car, but there really is a trade that you have to be willing to accept when doing all of this, not to mention we often forget how much we're actually messing with ENGINEERED geometry and how those changes ripple (more wear, more discomfort, etc)
Not sure I fully agree. Car manufacturers will always be balancing cost Vs warranty. They won't care that parts fail after they don't have to replace them at their cost.
Thank you for all the videos I can't get enough. My dream car is a 69 camaro but being 54 and not rich it will always be a dream. I wanted to get one of these a few years back but my wife said wouldn't be practical blah blah blah. So now I'm stuck in a stupid 4 cylinder.
Would love to see a cost breakdown and series if you do end up manual swapping your trans am! I have a factory auto and have been wanting to convert to a 6 speed myself.
@@BuckeyeBallistics Take it to a track and I'll show you how much 'slower' 315s make it. Granted it'll impact the economy a marginal amount, but its a v8 Camaro. He's not putting narrow low rolling resistance tires on it to hypermile.
@@BuckeyeBallistics Only if you have a physics 101 level understanding of friction. Tires friction coefficient varies with load. Less load, more friction. The shape of the contact patch also matters. Wider allows more of the contact patch to be at the optimal slip angle vs a long and narrow contact patch. Tire width also helps a lot with heat management, which impacts lap times a lot. Many many race classes have tire width restrictions exact because width does matter in the real world. Its a lot more complex than "f=μN"

Don't do spacers. Get a set of stock wheels but like mine i got 20x11 in the back and 20x10 on the front in the ZL1 style. I run a 315 in the back and like a 275 up front and it just fits like a glove and handles like a dream. I did the same as you but added adjustable end links with the wheel and tires I said and I freaking love the way it handles and looks awesome as well. At least that's what everyone tells me. I did a DOD or active fule mgt delete, stage 2 BTR cam, cat delete, 3 inch exhaust and headers with a tune and got 420hp & 410 to to the wheels. She's a perfect daily. Hi, resident Brit here. I wish I could say just how much I wish we had these cars in the UK. Such a good looking car ❤ Edit: quote it as imperial mpg. 25.7 works out at 30.8mpg. 😂
Alex has so many mini series on his channel i actually have to pause this video and go watch from the beginning to get caught up and experience everything with him
You had me looking on marketplace for one of these lol I've been thinking about it because the engine is fantastic and an all around good looking car IMO.
My stock 5th gen with a K&N made 373 whp, but I'm at a higher elevation, too. 3,000 feet elevation. My idle was sitting at 525 rpms, so I took it back to my friend who tuned it, and he wanted to experiment (I let him do that if he wants to), and he put that fake chop on it. He called it the ghost cam idle. I didn't like it, so I made him change it back, and set the idle at 650. I told him that if I wanted it to sound like a choppy cam, I would put a cam in it. Oh, and you can get a lot more power out of a stock engine. My tuner friend got mine to 425 whp.
I've just chased the same thing on a 2009 express single rear wheel cube van. Built an aluminum gen iv 5.3 with gen 3 706 small combustion chamber heads, with a 2002 LS1 cam. 0-60 is at least 3 seconds better and fuel economy is 1.5 mpg better than the tired iron 4.8 that came out. Truck is very heavy, and accelerates like a normal vehicle now. I am still tuning it and hope to improve it further. I still need to tune the transmission and get the wideband working to finish the engine tune.
Alex! Glad to see that you support JD Vance in this election. I didn't realize his passion for tuning muscle cars. I like him even more now! I loved hearing him talk about the Porsche!
My matco torque stick set 65-150 ft lbs is awesome and always tested with 5lbs of correct. Use them daily on AAA spare installation. Been using for over 10 years.
20ish years ago, my buddy built a turbo Integra. Highest hp on a stock engine if I remember. He would hook his laptop up while cruising on the highway and lean it out. Stupid good mileage.
I used to ride my MTB right past your condo when I lived near Division and Hoyne. I used to take Division to Wells to commute to work. This was in the early 90's after the Raygun/Bush Recession. Chicago is so funny. I never had any issues in the so-called sketchy areas, but I was robbed in Wrigleyville.
Once upon a time I used to say the main pulley crank bolt on Hondas were tightened by the hand of god but after purchasing a set of those weighted sockets off of the tool truck (yes the joke of owing $20 a week for the rest of my life is very real) basically ended that struggle whenever I have to do timing belt replacements.
18:59 so my tool man told me years ago that torque sticks don’t work well with electric. I’ve never checked to be exact , because I do a 2 step torque adjustment procedure 1. Use an 80ft lb torque stick (blue) 2. Lower the car till the tires “kiss” the floor and torque wheels to 100 ft lbs with the torque wrench Or you can do the factory rec spec. I do most cars and light suvs at 100 myself.
Yes. I know about the weighted socket because I have a Honda SUV that needs a new timing belt every 100K miles. It works wonders on the crank bolt. You lose less torque from your impact.
Weighted sockets help when the bolt can flex, such that after an impact it can flex back. With a crankshaft bolt usually the crankshaft itself can flex resulting in this flex back. With a weighted socket the inertia stops it from flexing back. Play is especially killing for flex back, which is why extensions often make you lose energy.

Man that 1990s turbo awd suv is going to be sick 58:58
I was going to make the same comment!
Exactly!
It’s either a typhoon or a Syclone
It’s a typhoon. You could make it out in his upload over the weekend when it was blurred out.
I just learned ST & KW are basically the same!
Also, $5 for a gallon of fuel along with the gnarly taxes. You gotta get out of Chicago! Money straight down a pothole
ST is KW carbon steel line vs the stainless steel bodies.
@ At first I thought he misspoke, even then realized within seconds that was highly unlikely so did research.
Love learning new things. For the average consumer. You wouldn’t notice the difference between either brands. Solid opportunity to save a few bucks, as KW make excellent products.
We are paying 1.45$ a litre here in Quebec..... (Canadian Dollar)
Immediately knew when I saw the clip. YOU GOT A GMC SYCLONE? That's awesome! Can't wait to see that series!
He was looking at a typhoon last time. Wonder which one he got…I want both 😂
They're so rare. That's going to be a fun watch to see one up close mechanically.
I'm firebird guy myself, and miss driving manuals, my Sunfire 5spd could achieve tank avg of 31.5 mpg driving normally
p.s. when dyno testing a car. load is your friend more load higher power numbers, see numerous times, only during track runs would you see a change if you monitor data, main effect is a slight improvement on rpm gain accelerating out of a turn, you would see even more with deleting the ac system, but that's not the point of your car.
Your the best understanding automotive mechanic ever ❤
Please don’t sell! We, your humble viewers, were super excited about following your LS3 journey! The SS is the perfect LSC project - modern, but not too modern. Please please please keep and modify!
Alex you have the best channel on UA-cam nice work on the car don't ever change
@18:00, Alex, there was a Red Bumblebee (bug) toy back in the day. Idk if there was a cartoon or comic book reason for it, but i had both a red and a yellow Bumblebee. Now you have one too. Or you could wrap it? And get Autobot decals! Please, get Autobot decals, and show your kids...
Mid week videos are the best!
@LegitStreetCars; Alex, please continue with this series on the 2010 Camaro. I have a 2010 2SS 6spd car, and needless to say it’s been a challenging car to locate parts and fix. I look forward to your next video.
I can remember first hearing about ratcheting spanners (wrenches). I actually purchased some last year, i still tend to go for my solid spanners first, especially to crack or properly tighten, but in some situations ratcheting spanners are an absolute game changer.
I've got some with swivel heads, and use them constantly.
My favorite skyline is Cincinnati when approaching it heading north. Really cool.
I forget how pretty that is
That is a one pretty one. My top 5 are #1 Hong Kong. #2 Tokyo. #3 Chicago. #4 Shanghai. #5 Perth.
Uploaded 5 mins ago?! Looks like I'm busy for the next hour. Thanks Alex!
I really wanted this car when you first got it, and now i really REALLY want it. Love this car, love this platform, and the mods are fantastic. Hell yeah!
You and Derek from Vice Grip garage are the best.
You should wrap the sway bar with a layer of Teflon tape where the bushings are. Those poly bushings squeak badly after all the lube gets washed off.
I didn't know that trick! I'm definitely doing that next time. I've gotten used to the "scrunch" sound when first getting in.
You gained 20HP, but don't forget, you were driving the car with a bad MAF. That would have affected power and fuel economy.
tunedbyai AI fixes this. Introducing The ECOMARO: Improved Efficiency
58:56 IS THAT A TYPHOON!!! Cyclone nation
That's what I said
I was going to say-- that looks awesome!!
Same thought, here!
Typhoon or a Syclone? Yes, S not C.
Chicago skyline is the best, but when you are driving into Las Vegas it's pretty cool too. I am a Chicago based truck driver and I have been everywhere. Love you're channel Alex I am always waiting for the next video to drop. Later.
I always liked the Eco Vette build! This is great!
Gas down in Missoura (rural outskirts of StL) is $2.70 per gallon
Good ol Mizzoura
In Denmark the gas price is 8,10 a gallon. So you Americans is lucky to drive nice cars with nice engines. Love your videos 😊. Keep them coming, Alex 👏👍
No way, that's insane! I just paid $3.80 for 93 here in the southern States
Pork superpower of the world!
Even crossing the border into Canada, the price difference is huge.
Always love when you post, even as a certified tech I learn quite a bit while watching. Keep up the amazing content!
Love your videos, the amount of details in your videos are just awesome. You should try to find a camshaft upgrade that can keep mpg the same and add more power. The details fron that video would help a lot of DIY camaro owners. Keep it up man
It would be interesting to see how the NK Performance Cam, that won the Weingartner Racing LS Camshaft Challenge, would perform on the street.
*Noise, vibration, harshness. But yea. It's always a compromise to one degree or another.
Not sure I fully agree. Car manufacturers will always be balancing cost Vs warranty. They won't care that parts fail after they don't have to replace them at their cost.
@@Drew.Pugh.Barney.Mcgrew I don't think he meant those were the ONLY areas of compromise...
Doesn't matter. You still ruin comfort with upgrades. Literally the point. Of course they're not gonna care.
@BSFJeebus "Ruin" isn't necessarily the word I would use...definitely COULD be, but not necessarily.
Ever since Alex quit his full time job to do youtube I've been hoping he'd change to a two video a week format. YAY!!!!!! THANK YOU ALEX!!!!!
Sir the camaro reminded you that eco and camaro dont lego 😅 awesome to see the build.
Love it! You should delete the AFM system in a future video. Lifelong Camaro fan, so I’ve loved this series!
You don't need spacers, you need wider wheels and tires. It'll fill up the wells nicely. You can squeeze 315 square in there.
Which adds weight and drag and thus makes the car slower and less mpg...
@@BuckeyeBallistics Take it to a track and I'll show you how much 'slower' 315s make it. Granted it'll impact the economy a marginal amount, but its a v8 Camaro. He's not putting narrow low rolling resistance tires on it to hypermile.
@@ruleslawyer Width of the tire has nothing to do with traction lol, common misconception.
@@BuckeyeBallisticsThat's why racers use 215s
@@BuckeyeBallistics Only if you have a physics 101 level understanding of friction. Tires friction coefficient varies with load. Less load, more friction. The shape of the contact patch also matters. Wider allows more of the contact patch to be at the optimal slip angle vs a long and narrow contact patch. Tire width also helps a lot with heat management, which impacts lap times a lot. Many many race classes have tire width restrictions exact because width does matter in the real world. Its a lot more complex than "f=μN"
I have a full bolt on, cammed 2010 Camaro SS. I get 11MPG...and I haven't even installed my 4k rpm stall converter yet.
ANYTIME I see someone wearing safety glasses when working with springs always will put a smile on my face. Yep.... That will stop it :P
I remember Norm in "The New Yankee Workshop" saying in a deadpan voice, "There is no more important rule than wearing these. SAFETY GLASSES." They are a magical forcefield that deflect flying railroad ties.
I have never heard of or seen wheel weights on a brake caliper before that is a first for me.
LegitMidwestBro Alex back at it... 💪😎
I’m an electrician, and I wear brunt work boots every day. Used to wear Irish setters, but brunt work boots are way more comfortable, way lighter, and in my opinion, look just as good.
would love to see some classic american muscle on the channel!
The only thing I screwed up on was getting non all season rubber. If it shows I'm screwed. Otherwise it's perfect. Oh, Continental Pro Contact. They HATE snow but that's all that stops her!
Hi, resident Brit here. I wish I could say just how much I wish we had these cars in the UK. Such a good looking car ❤
Edit: quote it as imperial mpg. 25.7 works out at 30.8mpg. 😂
Alex has so many mini series on his channel i actually have to pause this video and go watch from the beginning to get caught up and experience everything with him
This Is Dan Bell - The Best channel for dirty motels, exploring, etc. Highly recommended, the "another dirty room" series is HILARIOUS
Dan Bell is awesome!!
You had me looking on marketplace for one of these lol I've been thinking about it because the engine is fantastic and an all around good looking car IMO.
Your 400hp camaro is getting better gas mileage than my 160hp Toyota 😂
Brother what's wrong with your Toyota??
@NathanaelNaused 400 pounds of car audio in it lmao 🤣
@@Pittsburgh-412 400HP vs 400+ Pounds lol
I've been watching you for a couple years now and never once herd you mention stance or fitment 😢 I have way more respect for you now❤
That Mask ain’t gonna save you from a missle launching strut 😂
29:06 so leave, not just Chicago but Illinois also. Move down to Tennessee and hang out with Derek from Vice Grip Garage.
Sold, I believe. My barber dropped me a picture of this Camaro on a car trailer in Naperville as of 11/5.
Haha. It’s mine.
I’ve never checked to be exact , because I do a 2 step torque adjustment procedure
1. Use an 80ft lb torque stick (blue)
2. Lower the car till the tires “kiss” the floor and torque wheels to 100 ft lbs with the torque wrench
Or you can do the factory rec spec. I do most cars and light suvs at 100 myself.
Yes. I know about the weighted socket because I have a Honda SUV that needs a new timing belt every 100K miles. It works wonders on the crank bolt. You lose less torque from your impact.
You got the typhoon! Can wait to see that vid!
For 93 in Houston usually pay around $2.85-$2.95 over the last few weeks. BTW Chicago does have the best skyline ✌️
Were roughly the same age Alex. I love the look of those Camero's and Mustangs at the time. I had a brief career at a GM dealership and those Camero interior were always really cool IMO
