      @@JPurdy-yj3yg You can write something about many painters.
      But to scale Vermeer so high? I don't think he makes the top 3 in the Netherlands.
      With painters such as Vincent van Gogh, Pieter Breughel, Rembrand van Rijn, Jherominus Bosch, Gerard van Honthorst, M.C. Esher, Jan Sluijters (and others) is well represented in the Netherlands. Then if you make a top 10 of all painters, many of these names will not make the list. The Netherlands places Rembrandt van Rijn on a pedestal, which is perhaps right...but Rubens and Caravaggio are globally a step higher in my experience.

    Caravaggio should have been on this list. For his time he was a "game-changer". Back then, nobody has ever seen such physical emotion in art, presented in a very dramatic tone.
    Although the chiaroscuro style was not new, no one did it like him, to a point where he redefined the chiaroscuro style, which defined the look of 17th century art, and the whole Baroque genre.
    He started the trend in that style of painting which influenced allot of artists in Italy, and eventually making Mannerism/ late Renaissance art, fall out of fashion (which is ironic as he was trained by a Mannerist painter).
    Caravaggio's style would eventually have huge influence on allot of great artist's throughout Europe such as; Velázquez, Rubens, Vermeer, and even Rembrandt.

      By the way, no abstract painter has made this list. What about Kandinsky, Malevich, Mark Rothco? Or maybe at least some high-quality living realist? David Hockney is undoubtedly one of them. Surely this list should be called: top 10 most popular artists on postcards. ;)

Strictly speaking in terms of painting, Van Gogh spent his life in nothing but that medium. This list should be called "Top 10 artists with the most expensive paintings"
    There are plenty of painters better than some of the ones shown on this list. Most of these painters are regarded in bias sheerly due to the fact that their works are worth money today, which is determined solely by the art market.
    There are times in history where we have found paintings without a signature and discarded them because we didn't believe they were worth much, then later on find out a certain famous someone made the artwork, and all of a sudden its worth hundreds of thousands.
    What does that tells you about how we judge art?

    It's so sad that Van Gogh never lived to see his art become so appreciated. One of my art teachers said that he cut his ear off to give to a prostitute. Another of my art teachers told me that it was accidentally cut off during a fight with his friend, Paul Gauguin. But who knows? I've always liked his paintings...

      Why would a prostitute want an ear? That seems disturbing on her part.
      And with the fight with his friend well I guess he didn't want to hear it any more. HAHA! Bad pun

    • @finnk8530
      @finnk8530 2 роки тому

      @@rexgoodheart3471 I totally agree with you, although it's interesting you say that; accounts have suggested that his drawing ability was not as facile as other masters, with some people even finding evidence to suggest in some self-portraits he projected himself onto the canvas using an optical projection created through the arrangement of a curved and a flat mirror. Having said this, I would agree that regarding his ability to handle paint, he is the most technically impressive. Walking into a gallery full of masterful paintings, it always amazes me how far his work exceeds that of anyone else (i loved the way you described his paintings btw:)

    If people think expressionism is real art compared to the renaissance masters, then ok. To me, art started its decline by the 20th century. You can’t compare DaVinci Raphael or Michaelangelo to Picasso or Van Gough who were hacks in comparison. Sure they captured profound feeling, but skill is a factor, or should be. And art critics are literally insane. And putting Jackson Pollock in this video? Please stop!

Still, it's difficult to exclude other equally ingenious masters like Velazquez, Rubens, Caravaggio, Sargent and so forth. Any of these artists could have easily made this list. Then again, it's simply impossible to select a so called all time list of anything... reducing it to just 10 when there are an endless supply of extraordinary people, places, talent, etc. This sort of rating usually works most when the rating comes from its existing generation.
