Haha, i knew it was Vaer when i saw the thumbnail pic. I got my Ds5 solar diver this past winter on sale. $199 including shipping. Best watch purchase i've ever made by far, and i've been into watches for over 10 years. I get lots of compliments on it, and it's the no date version, so i can literally not wear or touch it for months and with the solar quartz the time will still be dead on. Zero compalints
Ben, thank you so much for the thoughtful and insightful review. It was a pleasure to watch, and that's a testament to both your storytelling and cinematography. The watches look absolutely incredible in this video (and makes me think I need to step up my game in terms of our video work). We look forward to incorporating many of your thoughts and points of feedback into future watch releases, and hopefully, a few of them will catch your eye in the same way as the D5 Pacific. All the Best, Reagan, Vaer Co-Founder & Watch Designer
I bought their G5 Meridian GMT (39mm). It’s fantastic, in all honesty, but I did end up selling it since I already have the Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT titanium which I wear more often. I can say that’s in awesome watch for the price, and the bracelet is excellent.
I’m with you on this-I’m particularly excited about microbrand watches, and the Vaer R1 Meca-Quartz is a perfect example of why. Microbrands often push the boundaries, delivering some of the most unique and innovative designs out there. That’s not to say the big brands can’t do the same-take the PRX, for instance. It might be almost cliché now, but when it first launched, it was a breath of fresh air. On the other end of the spectrum, I’m also excited about brands like Garmin. Some of their rugged, feature-packed models are true G-Shock beaters, offering everything you could ever need in a watch, AND MORE!!!!
Yep, totally agree, the border-free hour markers are much better than the "traditional" shiny version, which to be frank, is soooooo last century; likewise the hands, they really should be outline, preferably in black. Other than those items, this is a seriously, well styled watch and highly desirable..............
The blocky lume markers without the silver trim looks much less generic and so much cleaner. One cool thing Vaer could do is sell these concepts directly to the people who bought their first product as a thank you offering.
These are nice and Vaer makes a fine watch. I’m not more excited because I’m a fan of the inspiration for these - the Rado Captain Cook and the Heuer Skipper. However, the Rado is about 4x of the Vaer and the Skipper is many, many times the price. So good positioning by Vaer.
I got to meet Ryan Torres of Vaer and they're the real deal. They care. About design. About product. About experience. Just editing a video about Intersect.
Sticking with your theme about coming from major designs, and finding more individual models, there is ONE brand I have found, that is not homaged and also does not really copy anything else out there, which is Glycine! This year I made a mad splurge for 2 of them. Glycine (Sellita SW330-x auto 24hr), Tandorio (NH35A), Invicta Pro Diver (NH35A and PC32A), Pagani (Vk63), Skagen SKW6025 (1M12, last active Miyota for me), and a fascinating most unique 35 year old Pierre Cardin (Seiko PC21, was about 27.99 new in 1989), are my BEST watches now, which include about 2 dozen models from various brands over the last almost 40 years, that survived the test of time and hard environmental impacts in younger years, mainly the Army. Citizen and watches with Miyota calibres? They are mostly DEAD DEAD DEAD, and these were nice "Sunday" and office-wear dress watches that were never beat around. They simply died! Seiko quartz calibres in various watches, and a few new NH35A mechs? ALIVE and well, some after almost 40 years, without exception. Since last Xmas, I ended up with the 2 most expensive watches I ever bought, both brand new, a Glycine Airman Contemporary GL0463 and an Airman Classic Noon GL0376, both about USD 550. Time will tell how long they last. I also have 3 Timex watches I fortunately caught CHEAP at Ashford. Had they been the listed 200 bucks/piece, instead of the 60 each I paid, I would have been highly p*ssed off, because they look and feel dirt cheap. For what I paid, I can see a certain charme with the Waterbury GMT quartz and 2 Snoopies, and they have unique keeper personalities, but I am not going to buy any more Timex watches for sure. They would have been a sore disappointment at full price, rather than the big discount as last year's models! Anything else I have an eye on, is either a Tandorio, or a Pagani. There is no need to spend more, to get an excellent watch. OH, and I have found a few bracelets on AliExpress, that absolutely run circles around more expensive ones, and they have unique designs, at only 8 to 13 dollars a piece, so never mind any niggles about bad straps!
I have a DS4 38mm solar and love it. It looks a lot more expensive than it is. The autos are less compelling, and probably too expensive. I do lust for an A5 in that beautiful light green, but it is not available. Stock is always a problem!
Another interesting thing about Vaer as a company is their "Pre Owned" store. It seems to give the brand a little more cachet, and gives them more stuff to sell. I wonder that other brands don't do the same?
And if they become “the past,” well good luck with customer support. The established independents and houses under the Richemont and Swatch Group umbrellas provide peace of mind. That said, if you can’t (or prefer not to) spend 5K+, then microbrands are certainly understandable. Just go in with both eyes open, knowing these aren’t heirloom-caliber pieces.
I bought a Vaer a couple of years ago because it looked like a cheaper version of a Farer that I want and will maybe never stump up the cash for. It's a nice watch, they're a little expensive for what you get but I've paid more for worse
A Miyota 9015 with a wobbly bracelet - for $649. I think they added $200 on to the price for the fancy dial. I have noticed its sold out, but Im not convinced. Vaer thinking they are Seiko.
I’ve bought 3 so far , the original field watch from when they first launched and recently I got the solar diver. I liked that one so much I got my son one in the smaller size. Great watches that get a lot of wrist time .. and I have 30+ watches. The new designs look amazing too. I have a 197O’s Wakmann chronograph and it looks like VAER did an updated version of it with their chrono.
Have a lot of experience with Vaer Never have been disappointed their growth as a brand has been at a rapid pace and they serve their market very well, their price to piece ratio is pretty good given their competition
I just saw that they sell a 38mm solar diver! That's a great, rare combination I'll have to mull over. I also love the look of that Malibu, but have the same wrist as you :/
My understanding was that startups need to establish themselves by 'playing safe' with designs at the beginning and experiment as they become more established, as you have found with Vaer.
Honestly the R1 is one of the best looking watches I have seen in a long time. It obviously won't be to everyone's taste, but the mid century modern style it seems to go for just stands out in the best way from the sea of more tranditional watch styles you tend to see. I do think the price probably puts it out of reach for me, especially since its less likely to retain that value on the backend. Excellent video Ben!
I am sorry to keep repeating myself but…..24 hour dial…..INSTANT DEAL KILLER (in the 1st degree!) . I recently found and my dear Wife gifted to me at 70, a true grail. I used to fly a little. I know what the sub-dials are for. Baltany’ tri-compax Quartz model with a VK 67 running the historically correct 12 hour totalizer. $169.00 @ Amazon. My wife replicated this Chinese watch with a Blue, 39 mm Glass Box tri-compax with an in-house column wheel motor and it is gorgeous, TAG-Heuer Carrera. The Baltany price would not cover the sales tax of the TAG (a brand I have loved as much as Invicta…….peehew) but I love them both now….(NO not the Invicta too) I really like the way your channel is evolving. Fine vid man!
Just to let you know it is still possible to purchase Lemania 5100 based automatic chronograph by Swiss made Tissot for $444 at Jomashop. So trying to convince that Vaer with quartz Seiko movement is a good deal is at least misleading
Great video! Don't take this the wrong way, but the case of the Vaer D5 looks an awful lot like the cases that Addiesdive has been using (for the past couple of years) in some of their divers that hace twisted lugs. Even the crown looks too similar. As they said on Seinfeld "not that there's anything wrong with that". Just an observation from a watch enthusiast. Best regards
The $429 price point for the Vaer chrono is WAY TOO MUCH. You can get great looking meca quarts for $75! I guess us assembly dis that as you mentioned. But i retirned mine. Couldn't justify that money.
I was on the website, and it’s as transparent as Ryanair. You get a free tropic, but then you have pay options for your standard strap which include rubber again, steel bracelet, premium steel, premium jubilee. No, thanks.
I got the tropic and black rubber bands included with my watch. I thought (still think) that was quite fair. You want something else, they’ll sell it to you.
Flexispot...'near death experience inactment bench'?... sorry you asked for it!...thinks 'omg' could be a good mention without getting into trouble with the big boys?
Like their watches, really cool. Way over priced based on their specs. Too many dials ruined by the unwanted date window. Too many closed case backs on mechanical watches. If they ever sober up regarding their pricing, I'll purchase many of their watches.
Vaer is putting out distinctive watches at for good value. I really like the look of their chronographs but have to wonder when companies will stop putting out 3 sub dial versions with a useless 24-hour register. Vaer is not the only watch company guilty of this. To me it's just lazy design.

Damn, the D5 you got without the silver frame definitely looks better than the final production model with the frame. Looks so cool that way!
