This is very timely for me. As my wife and I are about to move into a new building that will be both our home and our studio spaces, we have been discussing how we might transition to working/living from the floor. When my wife was a student at the Royal Academy of Art in Bangkok, she and her classmates would work on the floor all day in a traditional style. As a result, she developed some amazing core strength. We have been discussing this since then, but our current studio spaces design was so well baked in that it didn't make sense to uproot everything and change. Now that we are moving to a new, bigger space, it seems like the right time to make that transition. Both being in our forties, we see a lot of value in that lifestyle shift, for many of the reasons you pointed out, especially mobility, strength and fall prevention.
I understand the concept and the health benefits but my days of doing anything on the floor are long gone. My younger days, we camped with tents and slept on the ground with sleeping bags. Many years of playing with my kid on the floor as well. But now that I'm in my 70's, if I'm on the floor, it's wouldn't be on purpose. Would need assistance to get up and probably days of recovery for all the pain of getting there. It sucks that I didn't plan better for this part of my life, but I have a good sense of humor!

I have been sleeping on the floor for 15 years and usually have the best sleep ever. It saves room in my house, easy to move, I have a foldable mattress. i have not tried floor sitting yet but, it is on my list of things to do. I will get a chance to do that once I get rid of most of the furniture in my moms house. I have recently been wearing barefoot shoes and toe socks and am loving it so far. I really want to get some barefoot boots to wear. That is next on my list of things. I can tell a difference in how I walk now along with even just wearing "regular" shoes. I have not parted with some of my other shoes yet.
15 years that's amazing! And yeah there's such a diff between regular shoes and barefoot shoes, I'm loving the Chelsea boots I recently got from Feelgrounds hahahahaa!
I just found your channel! I think you’re so charming and very inspiring. I’ve always loved sitting on the floor so maybe I’ll start doing it more intentionally! I’m excited to do a deep dive on your videos and find out more about how you started your journey 🥰
awwww i'm so glad you found your way there too! thank you for your kind words and it makes me so happy to know that i haven't scared you away with my personality LOLLLL.
@natashatheresa No definitely not, I like people who aren't afraid to just be themselves. I've just started my floor life. Would you recommend I get some cushions or something similar? I'm just sitting on a carpeted floor and it's not entirely comfortable. Thanks in advance!
This was such an interesting video to watch! And it validated 17-year-old me, who loved doing homework while sitting on the floor. :) I did feel like it was helpful and made doing my homework way more fun! This video made me want to try it again! I am loving this series Natasha, thank you for sharing all these tips so we can live more healthily throughout our lives!
Love this. Have you considered also how certain clothing items make sitting on the floor challenging? Clothing must be comfortable and provide decent coverage when sitting or rising from the floor. Professional work clothing is truly restrictive, especially some of the dresses and/or shoes we wear.
That's such a great point! I'm so used to using my yoga pants and joggers (athleisure in general) and just dressing comfortably, I can't even remember the last time I had to use actual professional workwear or anything. The thought of dress pants makes my crotch hurt LOLLLLL. But if I had to get something to dress up in, I'd try to find something loose and flowy haahahah
People always wonder why I hate shoes. I wear them when I go out or the weather is too cold. I am known for being barefooted as much as possible. I love the contact with earth, the floor, etc. This also keeps me more stable and my body more aligned. Just my thoughts after hearing you speak about shoes.
So, I've been binge watching your videos ( love your content and style) shared it with my friends and they were laughing because apparently personality wise, we're long lost twins😂 Anyways, I have mild CP since birth and am always in some sort of discomfort. However, as a child, and even now when I can, I loved sleeping on the floor, sitting on the floor, basically just love the floor😂 definitely going to check out the floor mattress and a few other ideas/products you mentioned. Definitely the floor desk too. Thanks for sharing your content and insights! 😊

Hey Tasha, you talk a lot of sense - I'm 50, out of condition, need to lose weight & have Type 1 diabetes & other related underlying health conditions which can make things more difficult in general. I just sat on the floor & thought I'm going to get up without relying on my hands & whatever I could grab onto 🤣 I had to use one knee, but I managed to do it 🙌 Hopefully if I can keep doing this I'll be able to do what you do & use no hands to get up. I definitely need to move more though & today is when it starts 😊
New subscriber here!! I love your videos! I am suffering with an increase in chronic pain that I've dealt with for decades. When I was younger dealing with this pain, I had floor cushions and a sleeping bag and it wasn't so bad. Everyone thought I was weird for it and asked when am I finally going to "grow-up" and buy an actual bed? I eventually did in my late 30's and have never really found a bed that I woke up feeling good in ever since. I also had decent abs at the time and have lost overall strength and weight gain of fat (I wouldn't mind so much if it was muscle gains) resulting in a squishy version of myself. I have excused it all due to IVF treatments and aging. Now I honestly don't think that is the only causes. Keeping agility, flexibility, and strength is what keeps people young and mobile. I am going back to the floor!! haha!! I feel like it's definitely going to be rough in the beginning, but worth it in the long run. Please keep posting!
@@shannonharris8866 hi Shannon! Glad to have you here and thank you for sharing your story! I’m sorry to hear about your chronic pain but yes, let’s see if floor living can help to alleviate some of that pain! I want to hear how things go, so keep me updated ok?
Your personality is so lovely and infectious! I've finally gotten a sofa table that I can easily use while sitting on the floor, I just love it 😁 my core strength is weak but I am working on it, my hip flexibility is pretty good 🤣
I’m 41, which doesn’t feel old to me, but it’s surprising how many people my age are struggling with things like getting up from the floor. Often it’s due to a lack of flexibility. I work as a gym instructor (as well as an English teacher!) and I regularly remind clients to stretch for a few minutes every day at home, but hardly anyone does it. It’s sad to see people struggle with mobility when even a small amount of exercise would make a big improvement.
this is so true! i honestly can't say that I stretch regularly myself, but whenever I'm on the floor it usually comes naturally... I feel like many people would either have to make it a part of their checklist, or stack it as a habit on top of something else to make sure it gets done (maybe watching tv at the end of the day), or having it as a part of their nighttime routine and have a checklist. otherwise we just kinda float through our days and dont' have as much intentionality as we should, even though it's those little things that would compound and make a big difference over time. great food for thought, thank you!
When I sit on chairs (at home) I sit on them as i'm sitting on the floor.. :). As a I child I would sit on the floor all the time. I actually don't like the "normal"way of sitting on chairs at all. (even at the dinner table my knees are up.) At home I walk around barefoot or just on socks. I'm 36(its not even old) and I can still easily asiansquat walk under desks,, but I have coworkers who are younger who have trouble just squating. Sitting Seiza style hurts the top bones of my feet, though (I'd need a pillow to sit like that for a long time)
Nice!!! My son is like that, in regular chairs he always sits on them like as if he's on the floor hahaha. Glad to hear you are staying sprightly! Also, I'm the same with the Seiza, if I sit like that usually I'm on a mat or pillow.
Oh no! Your back needs to get BACK in shape hahahaha! Maybe just ease into it, you could try resting your back on the back of a couch every few minutes as a first step hehehe!
Hahahahahahhahahaha! What’s funny too is I get companies asking to send me a recliner chair to try out and I’m like do you even watch my videos? Hahahaha
Great video! Because of your videos and other similar ones i literally cut the top off my mattress to make a diy futon and tossed the rest😄 Thinking of sitting on the floor now more but i probably need to vacuum my carpet first🤔😂
DENG that's innovative hahahahahaha! Okay after you vacuuming the floor LMK how the floor sitting goes HAHAHHA! Thanks for sharing your experience with the floor bed, I love reading this stuff!
Hi DAVE! I KNOW.. this particular rental is a bit of a frankenstein house from the previous owners, but we took over and updated everything the best we could HAHAHAHAAHAHHAA
I'm so glad it isn't just me. 😅 I'm in Central California and most houses in the past 60 years are built on concrete slabs so no floor vents, period. Mine are ceiling, some houses it's on the wall over a door. This is just weird.
yeah... this unit of the triplex was like an addition and they just decided that in the middle of the room would be the best spot and we're just like 😐😐 LOL
@@natashatheresa nah but it is a little distracting for some of us. But I'm the one who notices anomalies. I saw a commercial for something the other day, set on the front porch of a house. I have no idea what the product was. But it was obviously a set house, as the door opened out, not in. That puts the hinges on the outside, where the hinge pins can be popped out in seconds. Some people never noticed the awkwardly placed vent. I promise.
Oh yeah that sounds good too! I hear that from a lot of people, and I end up doing that whenever I’m out somewhere and only can sit in a regular chair hehe!

I get you. Maybe make the changes you can. Perhaps try sitting without back support, like royalty or the news anchors. They always sit really tall and don’t use the back of chairs, it seems. That would still build some core strength, I would think.
@natashatheresa I think it might be called chronic knee pain. I have that mainly from work. Going back & forth constantly all day long. I also have minor scoliosis, so it was hard to work at my last job. Part of the reason I quit. So to answer ur question. Its kind of hard. I am soooo glad that I'm getting the info NOW and making the changes NOW, because at 27 I still have the youth and health to make the changes rather easily...
Thanks for spreading the info ❤
Oh this is so great to hear!! Yes it’s so much easier get back on track while we are younger!
@natashatheresa Nice. Will have to let us know how they do in the snow and ice.
I just found your channel! I think you’re so charming and very inspiring. I’ve always loved sitting on the floor so maybe I’ll start doing it more intentionally! I’m excited to do a deep dive on your videos and find out more about how you started your journey 🥰
Thanks so much! Glad you found your way here, yeah do more of what you love hehehe!
I'm so glad I discovered your channel. You're so infectious and funny, plus you're really inspiring and helpful.
awwww i'm so glad you found your way there too! thank you for your kind words and it makes me so happy to know that i haven't scared you away with my personality LOLLLL.
I am loving this series Natasha, thank you for sharing all these tips so we can live more healthily throughout our lives!
yay for the floor!! definitely try incorporating it more into your every day living, just to spice things up hahahaha.
Great vid, Natasha. Love your energy and the helpful advice.
❤
Thanks so much!
I love the way you explain things, it's fun, ha.
Hahah thanks Courtney!
People always wonder why I hate shoes. I wear them when I go out or the weather is too cold. I am known for being barefooted as much as possible. I love the contact with earth, the floor, etc. This also keeps me more stable and my body more aligned. Just my thoughts after hearing you speak about shoes.
Yes, I wish I had realized this all sooner! But better late than never! Mainstream shoes are soo constricting!
So, I've been binge watching your videos ( love your content and style) shared it with my friends and they were laughing because apparently personality wise, we're long lost twins😂
Anyways, I have mild CP since birth and am always in some sort of discomfort. However, as a child, and even now when I can, I loved sleeping on the floor, sitting on the floor, basically just love the floor😂 definitely going to check out the floor mattress and a few other ideas/products you mentioned. Definitely the floor desk too.
Thanks for sharing your content and insights! 😊
HAHAHAHA oh what!?!?! that's so funny! it's always great find similar souls lol! I'm so glad that you've been enjoying the videos and yes, definitely continue to embrace the floor, keep me updated and thanks for connecting!!!
❣️ I also still sleep on the floor on a futon and I also have barefoot shoes and still love it all. 🌹😘
That’s awesome to hear!! ♥️🥰
Yes today it starts! Small incremental improvements! Here’s to being sprightly you got this!
I've finally gotten a sofa table that I can easily use while sitting on the floor, I just love it 😁 my core strength is weak but I am working on it, my hip flexibility is pretty good 🤣
Aww thanks for your kind words! I am happy to hear about your hip mobility hahahaha
(even at the dinner table my knees are up.)
At home I walk around barefoot or just on socks.
Go Tasha, go!
you are my idol ✨️ 🤪🤭

Hahahahhahahahahhahah you made my morning thanks for being on this journey with me 🥰🥰
Watching this while sitting on the floor.
That’s my girl!
That makes sense, the older I get the more I want to sit on the floor and lay on the floor I'm not even comfortable in bed anymore.
Thanks for sharing! That’s how I feel too hahaha
Same here. Since I discovered sleeping on the floor, my bed has become a great deal less comfortable for me to lie on.
went to sit on the floor while watching this video to try it out and my back is screaming 😭😭
Oh no! Your back needs to get BACK in shape hahahaha! Maybe just ease into it, you could try resting your back on the back of a couch every few minutes as a first step hehehe!
Love this video❤
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it!! 🥰🥰
The irony of getting an advert for a ‘riser recliner’ chair after this video 😂
Hahahahahahhahahaha! What’s funny too is I get companies asking to send me a recliner chair to try out and I’m like do you even watch my videos? Hahahaha
@@natashatheresa hahahaha no way, that’s so funny!!
@@lem3486 hahahahahahahaha
Great video! Because of your videos and other similar ones i literally cut the top off my mattress to make a diy futon and tossed the rest😄 Thinking of sitting on the floor now more but i probably need to vacuum my carpet first🤔😂
DENG that's innovative hahahahahaha! Okay after you vacuuming the floor LMK how the floor sitting goes HAHAHHA! Thanks for sharing your experience with the floor bed, I love reading this stuff!
@@natashatheresa thank you! Will do😄
FIRST COMMENT, DOG!!!
Side note, what's up with that heating vent in the middle of the floor? What HVAC guy is responsible for that travesty?!
Hi DAVE!
I KNOW.. this particular rental is a bit of a frankenstein house from the previous owners, but we took over and updated everything the best we could HAHAHAHAAHAHHAA
I'm so glad it isn't just me. 😅 I'm in Central California and most houses in the past 60 years are built on concrete slabs so no floor vents, period. Mine are ceiling, some houses it's on the wall over a door. This is just weird.
yeah... this unit of the triplex was like an addition and they just decided that in the middle of the room would be the best spot and we're just like 😐😐 LOL
i hope this horrible vent placement doesn't tank my video LOLLLLLL
@@natashatheresa nah but it is a little distracting for some of us. But I'm the one who notices anomalies. I saw a commercial for something the other day, set on the front porch of a house. I have no idea what the product was. But it was obviously a set house, as the door opened out, not in. That puts the hinges on the outside, where the hinge pins can be popped out in seconds. Some people never noticed the awkwardly placed vent. I promise.
i have office chair for gaming, but I sit in fact crisscross or like feeling or weird poses what I would do if I was sitting on the floor basically :D
Oh yeah that sounds good too! I hear that from a lot of people, and I end up doing that whenever I’m out somewhere and only can sit in a regular chair hehe!
I still have terrible hips, I have been working hard on it though for 6 months!
you got this!!!
@@natashatheresa thank youuu
I need to get it beck also. It’s hard for me to get off the floor. My life is very sedentary.😔
Half the battle is acknowledging that there’s work to do! Just a little at a time is all it takes! ♥️♥️
Which mattress do you use?
I started with the classic futon mattress from Zonli but am now using their slightly more expensive one that has a removable cover, it’s a tad thicker, maybe by .5 inch. bit.ly/natashaZONLI
Got a Fulton ordered (real japanese styled one) and looking at lowering my desk to 2 feet off the ground at times.
Do yoi trckommend something like a meditation pillow or zabuton?
Oh that's exciting please keep me updated!! For meditation pillows, this is the one I currently have: Velvet Zafu Pillow (w/ buckwheat hulls): amzn.to/3VhjiDU
I have a buckwheat hull meditation pillow. They are nice.
@@natashatheresa will do.
I originally tried the floor mattress you recommended but it was just a bit too thin for me. I'm hoping a more traditional futon will be more what I'm looking for.
@@MichaelVash7886 Ahhh yeah! I actually have decided to upgrade myself as well, I"ll be talking about it in a future video, I've passed my initial one on to my son hehe!
I like this video. But how can I get used to sitting on the floor when I have knee pain. When ever I do try that. It's hard to find a comfortable position long term. Because of my knee pain. But I'd still would like to do it.
Hi! Are there other instances in your life where you experience knee pain?
Because it's based on how much activity I'm putting it through.
@@jadenlightnight7695 thanks for sharing! I'm not sure if this can help but my friends @thealife run a mobility YT channel and maybe there's videos that can help you alleviate your pain. I actually just watched this video this morning about kneeling pain from them, but yeah check out their whole channel just in case something could help! ua-cam.com/video/OtvN1JRs0XI/v-deo.htmlsi=jOXy5h0rtmLLQI8k
I’m a barefoot and barefoot shoe gospel follower but my husband would divorce me if I tried to get rid of our bed and couches hahaha. Tbh I end up sleeping on my baby’s hard ass floor bed about 75% of the night anyway so I guess I’m getting some of the benefits.
this whole comment has me rollin' LOL. Yeah I'm gonna say you still reaping some benefits LOL
I find my legs fall asleep when i sit on the floor too long. Any suggestions?
Hi Jenny! For me it's just been that whenever I notice my legs getting a little tingly, I switch positions, it may be as constant as every few minutes, but it kinda has become automatic now for me hehe. I do have a meditation pillow I sit on that helps me also to have a variety of positions.
@@natashatheresa thank you! As a kid I always preferred sitting on the floor. Thank you for sharing all the benefits!
@@jennygreer7499 same! but when i try to do it now when I'm at a gathering at people's houses, they feel bad for me and try to offer me their seats HAHAHAHAHAAHA. thanks so much for watching!
@@natashatheresa 😅❤️
it all starts to make sense when you look at it from the evolutional point of view. human body is about 200 000 years old. but the invention of an actual bed hapenned pretty much recently. all those cushioned mattrasses are what, tens of years old, right? the body simply hasn't evolved to that 🤷
YUP, we only have ourselves to blame LOLLLL
With MS the floor is no longer my friend. I am currently doing a move smart MS Ireland physio programme to build up my strength and combat foot drop.
Gurl I feel pains in muscles I haven’t used in decades 😂
