    I was pretty much bedbound due to two herniated disks in my neck and back. After watching videos like this that promoted sleeping and sitting on the floor, and being desperate to get out of my bed I tried it.
    After about 2 months of doing this not only has my pain dropped only the spots where the disks are herniated, I got my mobility back to the point I am able to work out again. It’s been a turning point in my life and I will NEVER go back.

    I'm Pakistani and the sad thing is a lot of south Asians born and bred in the west have adopted a lot of western bad habits, because up until 15 years ago we were still spending a lot of time barefoot because we didn't wear slippers in the rooms, we slept on the floor when we were house guests, we ate on the floor if there was a large gathering (putting down a sheet like a picnic) and we were in deep squats often. Now I'm realising just how harmful it was to stop all that. When I get a new place I'm intending to design it in a way that God willing those habits will be formed again. I will have furniture, but most of it will be floor/low furniture.

    • @natashatheresa
      @natashatheresa  Місяць тому +8

      yes, it's sad b/c sitting/sleeping on the floor or going barefoot are considered to be like, bad habits, or for those who just can't afford the "nicer things", but in reality, those are the actions that are keeping us limber and healthier for longer.

    I have been sleeping on the floor for decades. I makes everyone feel bonkers around me. But it is really comfortable and when you have a floor bed, raising children is so much less scary, and bed works as a multi use space.

      That’s amazing! I agree about the kid thing, I actually had my kids move from a crib to a floor bed, and it just made me feel less nervous about them possibly falling out of bed or anything. I'm 73. You lose muscle mass. It's like watching a sci-fi movie, where your arm muscles shrivel up. I started floor sleeping, so that I would strengthen muscles to help me get off the floor. I will have a floor sitting area, as soon as I can reshuffle my living room.

    This channel was one of the main influences for giving up our bed. I had an achy back when I’d wake up, and started sleeping on a foam mat in our room. After a few weeks, hubby gave it a try - and no one slept in our king size bed again! It has since been moved to the guest room (son got the queen bed from there). Btw, we’re in our later 50s.
    Floor sitting is still in the baby stages. I don’t have the core strength yet. Neither do I have the leg/ankle strength for deep squats. What helps me is to use lower “chairs”. I’ll use a foot stool as a chair. Lots lower and no back support… so still a win. Or I’ll use a yoga block to sit on for a “deepish” squat, so I can practice that position more comfortably. And when we replaced our old, flat throw pillows on the couch, they became floor cushions for tv watching.
    Here’s to trying to stay agile while aging!

    This is very timely for me. As my wife and I are about to move into a new building that will be both our home and our studio spaces, we have been discussing how we might transition to working/living from the floor. When my wife was a student at the Royal Academy of Art in Bangkok, she and her classmates would work on the floor all day in a traditional style. As a result, she developed some amazing core strength.
    We have been discussing this since then, but our current studio spaces design was so well baked in that it didn't make sense to uproot everything and change. Now that we are moving to a new, bigger space, it seems like the right time to make that transition. Both being in our forties, we see a lot of value in that lifestyle shift, for many of the reasons you pointed out, especially mobility, strength and fall prevention.

    I understand the concept and the health benefits but my days of doing anything on the floor are long gone. My younger days, we camped with tents and slept on the ground with sleeping bags. Many years of playing with my kid on the floor as well.
    But now that I'm in my 70's, if I'm on the floor, it's wouldn't be on purpose. Would need assistance to get up and probably days of recovery for all the pain of getting there. It sucks that I didn't plan better for this part of my life, but I have a good sense of humor!

When I was younger dealing with this pain, I had floor cushions and a sleeping bag and it wasn't so bad. Everyone thought I was weird for it and asked when am I finally going to "grow-up" and buy an actual bed? I eventually did in my late 30's and have never really found a bed that I woke up feeling good in ever since. I also had decent abs at the time and have lost overall strength and weight gain of fat (I wouldn't mind so much if it was muscle gains) resulting in a squishy version of myself. I have excused it all due to IVF treatments and aging. Now I honestly don't think that is the only causes. Keeping agility, flexibility, and strength is what keeps people young and mobile. I’m 41, which doesn’t feel old to me, but it’s surprising how many people my age are struggling with things like getting up from the floor. Often it’s due to a lack of flexibility. I work as a gym instructor (as well as an English teacher!) and I regularly remind clients to stretch for a few minutes every day at home, but hardly anyone does it.
    It’s sad to see people struggle with mobility when even a small amount of exercise would make a big improvement.

      @natashatheresa  Місяць тому +1

      this is so true! i honestly can't say that I stretch regularly myself, but whenever I'm on the floor it usually comes naturally... I feel like many people would either have to make it a part of their checklist, or stack it as a habit on top of something else to make sure it gets done (maybe watching tv at the end of the day), or having it as a part of their nighttime routine and have a checklist. otherwise we just kinda float through our days and dont' have as much intentionality as we should, even though it's those little things that would compound and make a big difference over time. great food for thought, thank you!

      @@natashatheresa nah but it is a little distracting for some of us. But I'm the one who notices anomalies. I saw a commercial for something the other day, set on the front porch of a house. I have no idea what the product was. But it was obviously a set house, as the door opened out, not in. That puts the hinges on the outside, where the hinge pins can be popped out in seconds. Some people never noticed the awkwardly placed vent. I promise.

      I get you. Maybe make the changes you can. Perhaps try sitting without back support, like royalty or the news anchors. They always sit really tall and don’t use the back of chairs, it seems. That would still build some core strength, I would think.

I also have minor scoliosis, so it was hard to work at my last job. Part of the reason I quit. So to answer ur question. Its kind of hard.
