I remember a stylist telling me she couldn’t show me how much she was cutting. I should have known then to leave.

So sorry that happened to you. I heard from a person who said every salon appointment the stylist was saying they needed a trim because they had spilt ends. So the client went to someone else in the shop & they told them their hair was ok. When back to the other styist a week later and the styist said they needed their ends cut because of spilt ends. The client went off on the styist. Turns out they were doing a cut to get more money out of the client.

I love the stylists who tangle and rough up your hair and then cut off the damage they caused, and charge you for it

I'll try not to skip any of your channel ads, sir ,because I feel I need to make some contribution for all the wisdom you share. I promise it's like you speak directly to me and know my hair journey and woes. Thank you for your clarity and confidence in your craft. I'm so guilty of being vague with barbers and stylists although i havent been to a salon in forever. I now take some responsibility for my past poor experiences. I'll be better. 😅

My stylist always ask me if my hair goals are the same. I’m growing my hair and she just trims it. I’m not really interested in a shape. She’s been my stylist since 2018. We had a consultation the first time and since I see her every 3-4 months and we have a consultation every time to see what I’ve been using and if my goals are the same.

Got my trim. Everything went well! The stylist wanted to make the back even with the front (get rid of the tail) I explained i usually get a V-cut, not a straight edge. I also explained i had a corrective cut so one side of the v was shorter/more dramatic so she didn't need to do a drastic cut to make it all even. With that we were back on the same page. Lesson: pause to asses the hair, explain your history, cut short, asses, cut more, leave happy, tip well ❤.
I'm not afraid to cut but today i wanted to keep the length in case i wanted to do a petty update video on the curly cut situation

As usual your wisdom is helping lots of women who don’t speak up and communicate to their stylist what they want! You must advocate for your self as if you are going to a Doctor’s appointment!

Thanks so much for this information! Here’s something crazy - even an actual measurement can mean something different. I learned the hard way that an inch to me was more like 1.5-2 inches to the stylist. How can that be? Chile…

I will say since watching this channel, I have really read through salon websites. I haven't been to the salon in years due to medical issues. I have noticed that some salons require the first appointment to be in an person consultation. One noted that it is required for any cut/trim request. Now my thought is that they likely charge more than others. Those salons tend to have all licensed staff, including the braiders. It's interesting to see.

I love that you have consistently reminded us as consumers that we have agency. Not sitting in a stylist’s chair being sentenced to whatever arbitrary length they decide.

Great advice. Thankfully, I have not ever left a shop feeling dissatisfied with a cut. I also think it's important to let the stylist know how you picture wearing your hair going forward. I like a stylist who will tell me if I'm being delusional.😇

Yep. Twice now - TWICE - I have gone to a stylist only for them to pull out a SPRAY BOTTLE FULL OF OF WATER and wet my hair before cutting it. And I know damn well the hair will shrink, but I have social anxiety - diagnosed - and didn't want to say anything because, "Oh, they're the professional, what do I know?"
WELL I KNOW THE TWO TIMES I LET THESE WACKOS CUT MY BANGS WET, MY BANGS RETREATED TO THE MIDDLE OF MY FOREHEAD. I'm lucky my hair's just wavy and not curly or that shrinkage might have hurt more! I'm definitely working on getting the courage to tell stylists "Hold on, stop," because every time I've gotten sussed out I've been right, and that's neither fair to me or the stylist.
Except the stylist who turned out to be a huge racist according to reviews, screw her

excellent advice. I'm one of those clients who thinks because you're hairdresser you know what I mean when I ask for a trim. I've never had it fail to walkout totally disappointed with my results. The only thing I'm not sure of is the terminology used today dusting, trim, and haircut. I only know of two a trim (meaning take off the ends) or haircut( which is cut it into this style) bob, mohawk, etc. As always thanks for your help.

The obsession with length is an interesting one...... These trim VS cut conflicts are always surrounding the length of hair. Someone with a Bob length of hair that if blown straight touches the top the shoulder shrugged will be like I have shoulder length hair. Then n a trim of a centimeter will have them saying they have had too much. Like you didn't have that much to begin with. That being said I agree with everything this stylist said because at the end of the day short or long it's your hair your voice and your decision.

So.....IF I get a hair cut by a stylist I do all the prep work (blow out) then go sit my behind at Great Clips. They be so scared to mess up they usually do exactly what I ask for.

THANK YOU!!! I appreciate your advice so much. Recently I took my 15 yr old daughter to a salon for the first time ever!! I was referred to her BY a former stylist of mine (een doing my own hair for 15+ years due to salon trauma😢). With your advice in my head 😂, I explained this was my daughter's first time EVER having someone other than me touch her hair, what style she wanted, my expectations for any trimming. The stylist and her assistant were gentle, she asked me before picking up the shears how much she thought should be trimmed. It was a wonderful experience.

I use a Pakistani barber who is so money focussed that he wants me back every month .... So he does exactly what i say or the pic I show him. I am not interested in long hair. Sometimes you just hit it off with a stylist as I did with my barber. I will keep everything you say in mind should I choose to go elsewhere if I want something different with my hair

This is the best advice ever!! I personally don’t go to salons. I have in the past a few times and that was a horrible experience. I never liked anyone bothering my hair. Everything you are saying is what I would do so, I don’t think a beautician would be so understanding.
