I knew Shawn in high school and let me tell you he was always singing. We were on the football team playing for West High school Bakersfield California. He would sing in the huddle, he would sing on the sideline, he would sing before school and he would sing after school. He was the kindest soul, shy but had a great sense of humor. Always smiling.
Sadly, I moved to Seattle in 1998 and life kept me from realizing my friend lived in the same city as I did. I would have loved to see him in concert or better yet seeing him on the streets of Seattle and continuing our friendship.

Wow. I didn't know Shawn went to West High. What years? I'm from Taft and I was introduced to Brad and Satchel in the early 90's. He's sadly missed.

@@sunnybrowne7293 Early to mid Eighties. I think he was a junior in 1983 when I graduated. He graduated in 1984 or 85.

What precious memories you experienced together and I loved reading what you shared. Shawn was really a deep feeling soulful man. I appreciated his presence every countless time. His gift of writing, playing and singing is a timeless gift. Forever with us. I miss him too. I hope his son is doing well.

He's the best artist that no one has ever heard of. I truly, truly appreciate his work and I'm heartbroken to find out that he's gone. He had such a rare gift of capturing emotion in his song and his music. I can't believe he's gone. I'm so sad right now.

For me it is exactly the same. From the video clip of '20th Century' onwards, I started buying the records of his various bands, following him in all his many achievements. Until I finally saw him in concert in Florence with Brad, in 2013. Memorable evening. Now, Brad's new album 'In The Moment That You're Born' was like a beauty stab, as Martin Fry of ABC would say, bringing back his voice and his touch on the piano. He will always be with us.

You deserve a huge thank You for this video. Shawn was a unique and outstanding character.
And never appreciated. Which he always deserved.
I could write a book on why I miss him.
    But not today.
All I will say is that being a young boy with big problems, this guy helped me a lot in my life.
And I live in a country several thousand miles away from Seattle.
Shawn deserves great respect and remembrance.
    Best regards from Poland.

Had the great pleasure of meeting Shawn, back in 2015, we played at 'sound control' in Manchester, England together.
He was the reason I started singing back in '92, so to have him invite my band to play with him, was to me, the definition of success..
Rest easy big Guy,, you had a beautiful breaking heart.....

Thank you, Lance Mercer, for this video.
Without Brad's and Satchel's first albums, my life would have been different... I would have been different... I was so overwhelmed with the... sensibility, the... beauty. Mind expanding albums.
So... Shawn... wherever you are... and even if you're only alive in our memories... Thank You!
Now, just a short message to all you gen'X'ers: How are you doin'? We look in the mirror and we sure see some changes!...
    But... Keep The Fire Burning!

All of the pictures of him and Regan warm my heart. He was here for us when we lost Andy. His music helped us and the fact that he got to sing for Kevin Wood in Malfunkshun and in a reformed Mother Love Bone was all the more fitting. Shawn was an incredible songwriter that touched my life and his songs are the damn soundtrack to so much of my life right next to Andy Wood. Thanks for this Lance and your amazing photos of both Shawn and Andy.

I was wondering what Shawn and his bands were up to lately, and read the news that he left us in 2019. Devastating. His music, his existence, we weren't worthy of his talent. May he return in the next life the superstar he should've been in this one. Godspeed Shawn. Thank you for the music you created, the lyrics you wrote that were part of the life raft that kept me hanging on to life when I was younger. God bless you. You are so dearly missed❤

I'm in tears. Not cuz I just found out. But his music has always done that. I remember not liking Brad but picked up Family used for cheap in middle school and fell in love. That album, Texas is the reason, & wowee zowee got passed along to the music nerds of the school. And everyone was blown away that gave Family a chance. Yrs later Shawn started touring solo. He was headed to Columbus, OH using locals as backing. I had lost my Family CD and msg him on myspace and to my delight he responded. Shit my pants. Couldn't make to show but he wanted to get me a copy signed anyway. Just rambling now. His voice is amazing. And to me he seemed like a humble, beautiful soul. Rest easy Shawn.

This was so nice to stumble upon. I feel a bit like an intruder by seeing some of the personal pictures, but they are a beautiful confirmation of his authentic character, musically.
Lyrics and voice which weave right through the heart to this day. That's quite a precious sort of immortality.

Big fan of Shawn, sat down with him in a bar in Edinburgh around 2003 hours before his show and our conversations were boundless.
He was my hero when I walked into the bar, sober throughout, when I left he was a friend. Such a memory I'll carry.
Saw the Brad reunion, followed them through the UK in 2008, met Shawn again, couldn't believe he remembered me.
Last time I saw Shawn solo around 2015 I had to let him down as he wanted to go to a bar and I needed to get home. We'd chat on twitter some times, never knew he put the face to the name but like always, an absolute gentleman.
This a beautiful collection, thank you for putting it together. I'll really miss new songs, I'm really blessed for the old ones. The Diamond Hand. RIP.

I feel lucky to see Shawn live many times. My all time favorite. I was watching the movie Gridlock’d starring Tim Roth and Tupac Shakur and all of a sudden Shawn’s voice comes in on a song by Critters Buggin in the middle of the movie! Or hearing his songs in Saprano’s episodes. Shit like that blew my mind! RIP Shawn. I heard that he has a son. God comfort him.

His music will always be such a big part of my life. Stoked I got to see Brad play a few times in small sold out shows in Seattle. That band was so fun and so fkn good ! Soo good!
He and the Band I miss sooo much! Good Thoughts go out to his friends and family. Special dude.

at the 10:33 mark, you see them playing outside of a Tower Records. I saw that same promotional tour in Denver. Brad had a club show that tonight, but came and did a free concert set. It was amazing. Bare bones, no light show... heck... no stage. they just plugged in into the corner of the record store. After the mini gig, they all generously hung back and signed autographs. I was there as a PJ freak to meet Stone, but became a life long fan of Sean and the band even since. I think 'the Day Brings' is one of the top 5 or 10 songs of all time.
